It's so funny how historical games have you convert the structures of conquered cities to your faction but Warhammer doesn't give a shit.

You play as dwarfs and conquer a lizardmen city in Lustria and then your guys are like "Yo Belegurn you won't believe this, they have the same brewery we have in Karaz-a-Karak." Or you conquer a city in Ulthuan as Tomb Kings and discover 10 buried legions and hierotitan under the city.

This will be even funnier in W3 when you get to the chaos realm and find farms and granaries there as Bretonnia.

But meanwhile while playing historical games the French just can't figure out how to use English farms as they are just too alien of a technology to them.

I'm not complaining btw, I genuinely get a laugh every time I think about it.

Who was the most disappointing "Big Name" historical figure in the franchise in terms of portrayal, and why?

I'm expecting lots of Caesar and Robespierre as answers, which would be totally fair. I'd also argue the likes of Savonarola, Lorenzo de' Medici and Cesare Borgia could have been used a lot better. Louis XVI from Unity as well deserved more screen time and nuance.

Napoleon might be mentionned be some as well, but considering the 1789-1794 window of the game, if they chose to include him in it, I'm surprised that the thing he is primarily known for during this period, and what was essentially his first military exploit does not appear. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Toulon_(1793)

It would've been a lot more interesting than the pointless cutscenes they shown in my view, and this would show his talent and perhaps foreshadow his ambitions in a much more effective way.

Need something cute, funny & wholesome to watch with my mom (must be on Netflix, nothing historical)

I've just finished watching Beauty Inside with my mom and she absolutely loved it, and I'm looking for something equally funny and cute to watch with her.

She's really loved Goblin and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon as well.

Also on a happy vs sad/emotional level, how would you rate Just Between Lovers..? I watched it a while ago and really want to rewatch it but can't remember if it was too sad or if it had enough funny and cute scenes to maybe be my mom's taste.

Thank You!

What ancient/historical names have you come across IRL? What did you think of them?

Here are some I’ve seen:

Socrates - school acquaintance

Agripina - former student

ClΓ©opΓ’tre - mother of a former student

TenochtitlΓ‘n - guy I saw on Tinder in the US

Attila Louis CΓ©sar - THREE first names of a guy my partner met once. He had to look at his ID to believe him.

This one’s not ancient, but my partner also met a guy whose legal name, given to him by his parents, was Alexandre Dumas. Their last name was Dumas and they really decided to go all in with the first name.

We live in France, where some names like Alexandre, Hadrien, CΓ©sar, Louis, etc are more common. Also, while many religious names come from ancient history, I decided not to mention any because they’re also very common.

What are some interesting ancient or historical names you’ve seen? Did you love or hate them?

Longshot, but does anyone know of a list of historical ateji kanji names used for US states?

I know Japanese has almost entirely eliminated ateji for foreign place names (goodbye η±³ε›½, hello をパγƒͺγ‚«), but after seeing California labeled as 加州 on an old Japanese map from 1902, I started to wonder if other states also had assigned kanji or if California was just special since it was the largest, closest destination in America and had been important since the opening of relations between the two countries.

I was thinking it might be fun to know what was in use for other places, if anything.

(What I really want, aside from just satisfying historical curiosity: reasonably believable/recognizable kanji for Massachusetts, as the name of a fictional region that will contain a fictional city that is a visual blend of Boston and Yokohama.)

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

STOP using shorthand or funny names of people and organizations.

Citadel AKA Shitadel, etc.

Ken Griffin AKA Kenny, KG, Mayo Boy, etc.

Fidelity AKA FUDelity, etc.

If apes do not use the correct spelling this will only muddy the water or diminish the spotlight on these people of groups. This is due to SEO(search engine optimization).

You better believe Ken Griffin the illegal short seller of Citadel Securities doesn’t want the spotlight on him or his organization. When apes post, they must remain focused on utilizing correct spelling in order to keep the spotlight and search trends full throttle on Ken Griffin the illegal short seller of Citadel and his illegal trading practices on GameStop and GME.

Not naming them only helps shills hide what apes have discovered in their DD. Let’s help r/superstonk get the attention it deserves by being clear and concise in naming market makers and their illegal practices.

And a good chance that even if they say "haha, that's a new one" it probably isn't and they just want to spare your feelings. In fact, not acknowledging the low hanging fruit and simply responding with your own name will probably be more appreciated by them and they will think of you as more mature and likable.

Would it be offensive to name fictional nations based on historical mythologies after different afterlifes

I’ve been working on building up my own fictional world for a story, where overall the concept is its an afterlife realm in which all sorts different nations and cultures are reborn in, essentially causing some cultures to be remade in this spirit realm, but very much changed by magical and spiritual aspects.

One challenge I’ve come across recently is what to name the different nations of my story, as just naming them the same as the nation they’re based on doesn’t feel right. One idea I had was to name these nations after different afterlifes from the cultures they’re based on, so for example there would be a Norse nation called Valhalla and a Greek nation called Elysium. I however am worried that this may come off as cultural appropriation, as the afterlife is a very important concept in many cultures. What do you think?

What were the names of these historical figures? (The Middle Ages)

I wish I could remember the exact countries, but the time period I can give in the middle ages in Western Europe, or the Uk.

The First was a Nobel woman who was a child bride who was sexually assaulted by a man as a younger girl by her husband (who was an adult man) and once she grew into a woman sought to protect the younger girls in her domain to prevent what happened to her from continuing on to her.

The second was a man who was incredibly evil. He was a swordsman or a knight and relished in killing many children. Like he went out of his way to do so and was infamous for it.

Thirdly was a Nobel man, who like Elizabeth Bathory, would bathe in pools of blood and ritually torture people.

If anyone has any idea who these people were and what their names were I'd really appreciate it!

The historical significance of Violet’s name

This is something that I learned very recently. Violet flowers actually have a lot of significance in the LGBTQ+ community throughout history; especially in lesbian history. This historical significance started with the Ancient Greek poet Sappho (who’s name is where the term β€œsapphic” derives from). Sappho, who is now considered to be the most historically significant lesbian, often wrote poems about love amongst and between women. In one particular poem, she wrote about a female lover wearing β€œmany crowns of violets.” Since then, Violets have become a symbol of lesbian pride and romance throughout history. The fact that Violet from The Final Season is a lesbian herself is a neat little reference to some history. This was just an interesting fact that I wanted to share☺️
