... keep reading on reddit β‘Last weekend I decided to start my full watch of the Friday the 13th series. I only got 3 movies deep but I was pleasantly surprised by how well the first two films hold up.
In an era where slashers were plagued with misogynistic portrayals of women and the overdone trope of the "Final Girl", I was refreshed to realized how smart the first movie was. The "Final Girl" wasn't the typical virginal goodie-goodie. The main villain was learned to be a woman herself. A lot of the men died in ways women typically would in other films.
The horror was really well done. The long tracking shots, the POV scenes from behind bushes and trees, the close up shots of horror on people's faces. In so many Horror movies, you can typically spot who the survivors are going to be pretty quick, but I was shocked a couple times on who died and when.
The climax for the first film was super well done. The audience knows very little about Jason's story other than "a kid drowned." >!Not to mention Jason's mom had a really nice turn similar to films like "Psycho." Having her speak as her son, convincing herself to kill for him. It was real creepy and effective.!<
In Part 2, Jason being in a sack with one eye, adds so much horror and mystery for the audience. There's something much more realistic and gritty about it. The gore was toned down a bit (some deaths in the first were pretty creative) but it still had a few brutal moments.
The finale to the 2nd, >!where you see a shrine with his mother's head!<, is next level horror. It was a great reveal and it showed so much of who Jason is as a character and a monster.
I could go on and on, but what did you guys think of these? When is the last time you gave those films a chance? I fully expect the quality from here on to cross that campy line into just bad, but I am fully saddled in and ready for the wacky ride.
I watched 'Friday the 13th Part 2' among a few others in the series on Friday and there's something that bugs me each time I watch it that I think would have made the film a lot better.
Jason's first victim at the lake is Crazy Ralph. Ralph comes to the camp, is creeping outside one the cabins peeping, and Jason kills him.
Not long after, Jeff and Sandra decide to go exploring and get hauled in by the cop.
I think it would have made the film a lot better - and set up the character of Jason a lot better - if these two events were reversed. I think it would have been a lot cooler if Jason - who has essentially been "dormant" for five years - didn't kill anyone until "his land", the original campgrounds, were trespassed upon. We see that Jason is in the woods that day. He see's that Jeff and Sandra were on "his" land. That night, Ralph should have died. Jason should have waited until the sun went down and then headed to Packanack spurred by the trespass against his property.
Thoughts?
At the end of the movie when Ginny and Paul meet the puppy at the door and all is well, Jason jumps through the window behind them and he has a full head of hair and looks like a person however, a second Jason comes in from the side in the next shot and heβs bald and almost zombie like with rotting skin. Is this just a problem with continuity or is the film trying to tell us something?
I'm resurrecting this from my days on the F13pt 2 IMDB board - here it goes:
I've always wondered if Paul knew a lot more about the realities or possibilities of Jason being alive than he admitted to. Its cool if you don't agree with me, but, for the sake of loving this film and discussion, I wanted to bring up my thoughts.
First, think about Ted not wanting to talk about Camp Blood. He had this look like he knew something bad went down OR that there is always a possibility of something happening again. He looked as if he might have been told not to bring something up and
Secondly, remember the campfire scene and then the bar scene. Both Paul and Ted make a big joke out of the Jason "legend." Paul says that "that is the last he wants to hear about Jason" (paraphrasing). Also, why would someone be so adamant about another part of a lake being off limits? I get it - it is closed down but what is the actual harm of checking out an old abandoned camp site other than the law? I'm talking about actual harm, not a scolding or a citation. The local cop (just a side note / thought? What officially is that character because his car says state police but his getup says local cop/sheriff) says "Its been quiet for 5 years and we'd like to keep it that way." This is very odd behavior for 3 guys familiar with the area. Remember, Ted knew the tow truck guy/local owner. Remember the bar scene when Ginny talks about Jason being a "frightened retard" and "crying out for her resurrection" (paraphrasing) ? Paul has a pretty serious look on his face, and clearly is agitated by Ginny bringing it up.
Thirdly, towards the end when we find Ginny in Jason's shack. Please let me know if I'm being dense (nicely) but how did Paul know where to find Ginny? Did he know of the shack? If he knew of the shack then he must have known something about this prowler/intruder/attacker that just knocked him out. Unless, was there an off-screen clue for Paul that led him to the shack. I genuinely would like to know if anyone else thought "How the heck did Paul know to go there." Do you think the writer's just left a hole again? Either way, makes for an interesting discussion IMO. Also . . .
Fourthly: "Where's Paul?" A lot assume he's dead, Jason put his body somewhere, etc, etc. But, what if Paul ran off after Ginny blacked out (assuming the last part is a dream sequence) because he knew he was at the least, partially responsible for this taking place? He was warned not to let the kids go over
... keep reading on reddit β‘I believe there is debate if Muffin died or if Paul is alive. Just curious everyone's opinions as I'm not really sure. I can see both points. I also put Spoiler even though it's been out for 38 years.
Barely a minute into chasing Jason and he's ready for a heart attack. Also when he discovers the remains of Alice and Mrs Voorhees he doesn't think to get out his gun, I mean not that it would have done him much good considering Jason was right behind him but still. Suppose he was just there to add to the body count and establish Jason as a ruthless killing machine who will kill anyone who enters his turf, and not even a badge can save them.
And I enjoyed it a ton more than the first. I thought it did a really good job of summarizing the first film without slowing down the pacing. It also seemed less "flat" than the first. Is the general consensus that the first or pt. 2 is more well-loved?
Scenario 1 : Jason from part 2 verses John Wick with only what is available at camp crystal lake.
Scenario 2 : Jason at his most powerful, verses John Wick with his full arsenal.
Recently Iβve been watching Friday The 13th for the first time. I just finished part 4 and Iβm going to watch part 5 soon. So I decided that I would review the movies. Here it is!
My Thoughts On Friday The 13th: Part 2
Plot Personally, I liked the plot for part 2 more than part 1. It explained why Jason is back but still made you wonder wether that was even true. It feels natural for the way the story progresses. It felt more realistic in a sense. I did love the end too. The way theyβre fighting and the running scenes and the action just amazing. Also, wtf happened to Paul?
Characters In this I felt like the characters didnβt have as much depth as part 1. I had my favorite few. But some just felt like they were there for a nice kill and for another sex scene.
Scares The movie did have some nice kills and all of that. But not the scares. I felt like I predicted what was right around the corner. This movie felt like it didnβt really care for any scares even though it is a horror movie. Yes, it did have its moments, but even those felt eh.
Acting The acting was great. The characters felt real. Yes, they were dumb sometimes but what do you expect from a horror movie?
Deaths Gore was amazing. Aliceβs death wasnβt the best, but creative. I didnβt feel like Alice got the ending she deserved. I know, Jason wanted revenge and the actor didnβt feel comfortable doing it because of her stalker. But they didnβt even need to have her. They could have explained something like at the campfire scene. Other then that I felt like the kills were good and refreshing.
Score I would personally give Friday The 13th: Part 2 a 9/10.
Conclusion The movie isnβt bad. It is enjoyable and for first time horror fans it is a good and nice way to start off your love for horror.
Future I will post a review for parts 3,4,5, etc soon.
Ending Bye. I hope you enjoyed my review. Have a nice day. If you want to give me some feedback I would be happy to hear it.
I posted this also on Amino, If it seems familiar to you thatβs why. I also posted it to r/fridaythe13th
I'm going through the whole series right now, I've only ever watched Jason X and Freddy vs. Jason. So, yesterday I watched the first movie, and today, well read the title.
First off, I have to say that any movie filmed in the 80's gives me this weird sense of nostalgia for a place and time I'll never live, and every time I see an action that happens then that would be unacceptable in our time, I snicker a little bit.
So, other than that I more or less enjoyed the movie. I really thought it was interesting the part at the end where Ginny puts on his mother's sweater and he thinks that it's his mother and she almost decapitates him. I thought that was a unique idea, something not seen often.
