What was this state/colony and city like in 1706 compared to 1790? What changed? What stayed the same?
On May 9, 1754, Benjamin Franklin printed the first political cartoon in American history, a woodcut of a severed snake entitled “Join, or Die,” in his newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin’s cartoon depicted the British North American colonies as a snake cut into eight segments, with each segment designated with an initial of a separate colony or a region as in the case of New England. An editorial discussing the “disunited state” of the colonies accompanied the cartoon, clearly suggesting that in light of the clear and present danger posed by the French and Native Americans to their security, the colonies faced a critical decision—to unite as a collective unit to repulse the enemy or remain disunited and suffer an inevitable death.
I think this is an important piece of history to look back on, and something we can learn a lot from and apply it today over 260 years later. That being an American is not the same experience for everyone, and that is a fallacy created by the right and the left in this country. Yes we are “all Americans” but being an American is not a blanket statement, nor is it a blanket experience. Your American experience is what you do every day in your corner of this country, what you do in your town, what you do for your family, your community, how you contribute to society. I love this country and want to see it succeed but we have been trained to believe we need to care what is going on thousands of miles away from us in an area we have no control over.
I’m an Ohioan, I care deeply what happens in my state, and in my county. I want to fix what’s going on in my backyard first before I give my energy to what is happening in California or New York, or Washington D.C. I can’t fix that very easily. But in the same token, when we are all fixing our own areas and thinking locally and building relationships toward what we see fit for the common good, we can come together and unite against a system to that holds us down, or an enemy in our midst.
I thought it was an interesting parallel and a great look back on some American history you guys might want to check out.
