FireDFS PGA Fireside Chats Episode #21 - FedEx St. Jude Classic
From FireDFS DraftKings 2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic First Look:
--FEDEX ST. JUDE BASIC INFORMATION--
Course: TPC Southwind (since 1989)
Yardage/Par: Par 70, 7,244 Yards
Scoring Expectation: Low-mid double digits most likely, winner has not exceeded -13 since Brian Gay in 2009.
Greens: Champion Bermuda
Field Size: 156
Cut Rules: T70 + ties.
Weather: Best forecast I've seen all year - temperatures in the 80s, winds under 10 mph, and no rain for all four days.
--DRAFTKINGS PICKS FOR CONSIDERATION--
ELITE
Rickie Fowler ($12,000) - He's just disgustingly good this year in virtually every phase of the game. Fowler is playing his superb T2G game with the confidence and poise of a soon-to-be major winner, and this event will provide him with a very nice warmup for Erin Hills next week.
UPPER TIER
Phil Mickelson ($10,200) - There's always a little concern over the "week before major" narrative with guys who are already qualified, but now that we know Phil will not be playing it, this event just got that much better for him. Phil has finished no worse than 11th in the past four years here with two runner-up finishes and a third. He's an easy play.
MID TIER
Kyle Stanley ($8,400) - He may have punted it bad at Colonial, but Stanley came out swinging last week at the Memorial, climbing all the way to T6 despite a crappy R1 74. He's playing the best golf of his entire career after a multi-year slump - there's no indicator whatsoever that he should slow down this week.
VALUE
Ian Poulter ($7,600) - Poulter has been incredibly steady this entire year (just not when we needed him to be at the Valero, of course), carding a runner-up finish at Sawgrass and two decent performances at the Byron Nelson and European BMW PGA. Poulter is familiar with this course and last finished T6 here in 2014. He's going to be hungry to qualify for Erin Hills, and his well-balanced skill set should make him a pretty good bet to make the cut here.
BARGAIN BIN
Braden Thornberry ($6,600) - Want to be the smartest guy in the room this week? Here's your man! Ole Miss' Braden Thornberry is coming fresh off winning the NCAA men's golf individual title - just the capstone in what could only be described as a phenomenal golf season
... keep reading on reddit β‘Hey guys sorry for the delay, I was away. So the tour continues its midwest trek swinging down to Tennessee for the St Jude Classic. With the US Open looming next week, a lot of good golfers are resting for the big event, leaving an extremely weak field this week. TPC Southwind is really only known for one thing: WATER! The course gathers by far the most balls in the drink of any course on tour and as a result the tournament has played over par since its move to Southwind in 1989. To counter this you'll need to find good ball strikers and those with a solid iron approach game. This course is a mixed bag as far as driving goes. People with lots of driving power have had success over the years but the same goes for raw accuracy guys like our defending champion Ben Crane. It's all about staying dry and hitting those putts.

Any wisdom to be shared would be greatly appreciated. I've never caddied for anyone before and think it should be a fun outing. If anyone has any wisdom to share that will make it more fun or myself useful to my friend playing in the Pro-Am, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: Our group played with Brian Gay and his caddy Kip Henley. Strange coincidence with /u/electoleum. His review proved true where Brian didn't talk much at all. He was cordial just very reserved. Kip got most of the flags on the green and even though our group didn't hit the ball that well, I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I'm glad I did it but I'm a little sore today. It was a little odd carrying clubs for a buddy, but a great opportunity. Thanks everyone for the help.
Lessons Learned:
Hey folks, I'm back! Kinda like that creepy uncle you politely suggested to never return. Anyhow, check the link if you feel so inclined or see below for the text!
Dustin Johnson - TA: 23, CHG: (-1.4) - As safe a choice as lifting a jet-ski. Johnson is a former winner here and hasn't missed the cut since dropping the ball at the hurricane that was The Honda Classic. He's been somewhat spotty in his last handful of starts if you're banking on Top-5s or wins from him. Reliable, and in a somewhat shallow field, he's a must start.
Chesson Hadley - TA: 23.125, CHG: (+10.2) - Didn't take long for me to jump off the deep end, did it? You should join me, the water's warm and there's cookies. Of course, they're wet, but what's a chlorinated Oreo between friends? Hadley should have been on everyone's radar, having posted four straight Top 25s including a Top 10 since missing the cut at the RBC Heritage. The sophomore has already made more cuts that he did for all of last year and appears to be finding some level of consistency.
Billy Horschel - TA: 28.5, CHG: (+17.8) - A notorious and self-identified streaker, Horschel prefers to get really hot for short periods of time. While there's definitely some serious phrasing issues in that sentence, there's also serious evidence that he's on a warming trend, having posted three straight Top 20s. Only Horschel knows if that's as good as he'll get on this peak, but given a T10 and T6 in his last two starts here, my vote is on converging trends.
George McNeill - TA: 30.125, CHG: (+6.2) - Started the year slowly, locking in precisely zero Top 25s in his first eight starts. Since then, he's grabbed six, including a Top 10 and two Top 15s. His record here isn't stellar, having gone 3-for-his-last-5 cuts, but it could be worse, which is like saying that mob boss isn't bad to bank with since he only occasionally kills you.
Paul Casey - TA: 31.67, CHG: (-1) - Well, the Brit has five top-10s this season, including second and third place finishes, but, in the most egregious case of sink or swim I've seen from a player this season, all of his other finishes are T30 or worse. He has just one attempt on record at TPC Southwind, a T24. In a weak field, sometimes a three-legged stallion is the best bet.
Jerry Kelly - TA: 31.25, CHG: (+14) - Jerry Kelly is extremely self-aware. He's fully aware he has the game to win but has been on record several times stating that he lacks the mental game to make it happen. He

FedEx St. Jude Classic

PGA Tour Golf: FedEx St Jude Classic; Billy Horschel
I am keen on the chance of Billy Horschel this week, on the final day of the Valero Open at the end of March I wrote ...........
"Horshel has won three times in the last two seasons and also been top 3 three times, he is very strong in contention and was 2-1-1 in his last three starts of 2014 to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx cup, two days later he became a father for the first time , what a couple of weeks ! No wonder he has struggled early in 2015, but this is his first chance since and I have a very strong feeling he will go ultra well today and over the coming weeks. He missed the cut here last year, but was T3 in 2013 and that is typical of his style, going deep when in contention and letting things slip when not. First child is a big motivating factor and this is his first chance to win/impress since the birth."
He finished third there and had a couple of middling finishes subsequently before a T13th at The Players Championship and T11 at the Memorial in his last two starts, he was T26th and T15th respectively in those two events last year before a T6th here, so is clearly in at least as good a shape this time round and has the confidence of that big end of 2014 in the "bank" both mentally and monetary and the hunger of fatherhood urging him to achieve, which is a big motivating factor for golfers, something we have discussed many times previously. He was also 10th here in 2013 , his last eight rounds at TPC Southwind have been a very consistent 71-69-68-67-67-68-68-70 and it is tough to see him out of contention this week. He arrived here early to prepare and also spent quite a bit of time with the sponsors FedEx, some of whom he has developed a close relationship with since claiming that massive FedEx Cup prize and he would love to add this title to his CV. In an understrength field, with the US Open just around the corner and many big names swerving this and others not totally suited by Southwind, he is my confident selection.....
Billy Horschel to win outright 17.0 general quote and Top 5 finish @ 4.33-5.0 general quote.
I would be a little wary of favourite Dustin Johnson, he is a former winner, but feels his game is just a bit off and last year, none of the top 7 for driving distance and DJ is huge off the tee, finished inside the top 18, he can win of course. but odds of 6-1 seem very skinny.
