Looking for ePubs, PDF's or other free downloads of books in the American Guide Series produced by the US Federal Writers' Project during the Great Depression.

Since these were produced by the Federal Government as I understand it these should all be in the public domain. I have seen them labeled as such and they were scanned by Google in the University of Michigan Library project, yet I can find only one on project Gutenberg and haven't found any free downloads on Google Play Books, though I haven't checked title by title. If found this copy of the guide to San Antonio, Texas but though the site indicates it is in the public domain they still do not allow downloads.

This article in the Atlantic about the project piqued my interest in these guides. The Rich, Weird, and Frustrating World of Depression-Era Travel Guides

Application Reminder: NEH Summer Institute on the New Deal Era's Federal Writers' Project

Dear Colleagues,

Just a reminder that Shannon Carter and I are co-directing a four-week, virtual NEH Summer Institute on the New Deal's Federal Writers' Project (July 11-August 6, 2021). The deadline for applications is March 1.

We're thrilled to feature guest faculty Jerry Hirsch, Susan Rubenstein DeMasi, Brian Dolinar, Catherine Stewart, Stephanie Jones-Rogers, Sara Rutkowski, John Edgar Tidwell, Betsy Bowen, David Jolliffe, Laurie Grobman, and Candace Epps-Robertson.

Given the eerie echoes in our own times of the 1918 global pandemic, the 1930s Great Depression, the specter of fascism, and high rates of unemployment, including out-of-work artists and writers, there couldn't be a better moment than this one to study the history and lessons of the FWP!

We especially encourage advanced graduate students, non-tenured and non-tenure track faculty, and HBCU, HSI, and tribal college faculty to apply. Participants receive a $3,450 stipend. Please consider applying and share widely with colleagues.

For more information, visit our website athttp://nehsummerinstitutefwp.liu.edu. Flyer with more details attached as well (PDF & JPG files for easier posting).

All best,Deborah Mutnick, LIU BrooklynShannon Carter, Texas A&M University Commerce

The Works Progress Administration funded the creation of hundreds of fictional and historical works under the aegis of the Federal Writers' Project during the Great Depression. Who got the profits when they produced best sellers?

I'm curious about the Federal Writers Project, which was a WPA program to employ writers during the Great Depression.

The project seems to have created a wide variety of books, mostly historical works and guidebooks.

The end products were sometimes managed by some of the big US publishers. Some of the books went on to be best sellers.

Main questions:

  1. Did the US Government get the profit when a book made back more than it cost to produce? How did publishing houses fit into the mix?

  2. Were the writers/editors paid pretty well? Did they get a salary, or get paid by the word/project?

  3. How hard would it have been to be chosen as an author for the program?

  4. Who decided what projects to fund? Were any questionable or strange choices made?

i'm ever curious about the writing habits of others, so i ask: do you work on multiple projects at a time, or are you a one project at a time writer?

i used to be a multiple projects type person, but since i came back to writing fanfiction, i can only focus on one at a time. i feel like doing more than one takes me out of a characters' voice (which is admittedly my biggest fanfic flaw). i do admit, it's less stressful to work on one at a time for me, so i'm happy i discovered this about myself.

how about you?

Incredible Resource: Federal Writers' Project, 1936 to 1940

Many of you more experienced researchers undoubtedly know about and have searched through the Federal Writers' Project or WPA for oral stories and interviews from your ancestors.
I did not know about this incredible resource until last week. Since then, I have been able to find interviews for three distant relatives (no direct-line ancestors). One was a former slave and two others were poor immigrant farmers. Besides those three, I have been able to find interviews with other folks who lived in the same towns as my direct-line relatives. Being able to read their stories in their own words almost makes me feel like they are sitting beside me. The interviews cover just about everything- travel, food, local gossip, religion, epidemics, fires, tornadoes (cyclones), farming, and more.
Here is a good article about the WPA and how to get started: https://lisalouisecooke.com/2017/04/03/wpa-records-for-genealogy/

Characters murdered while possibly working for Federal Writer's Project in 1930s

I read this historical fiction book within the past three to five years. All I remember is that the man and woman characters traveled together, a photographer and a journalist. I just read The Sea Keeper's Daughter's and there was a similar situation where the couple worked for the Federal Writer's Program implemented by FDR as part of the New Deal. So I'm assuming that's what these two people were up to especially since they were in the mountains somewhere in the U.S. I think the woman was pregnant, but the independent "don't want no baby holding me back" type. The couple was not married or even romantically involved, but the guy was probably in love with her because that's definitely a popular motif. They found the man's body (maybe the woman's, too?) in the forest years later and I think the foliage that he was covered in was important to the book's title or main storyline.

The only scene I remember is the couple in a dumpy house with a woman making them a meager dinner. I think there was a tween son there, too. She made them each one biscuit because it was the Depression and she had to ration her lard and the man totally wanted another biscuit, but knew this lady didn't have two-biscuit money.

Sweet, sweet Jesus, please help because I'm losing sleep over this. Thanks!

Please write me if how you can be a part of this project. We would like to work with someone in the long run. We can negotiate $ amount depending on your qualifications. $0.05 to 0.10

Thank you,

Update: Thank you guys for messages. I am working with one of you from this sub. If anything changes, i will update.

Are there any actors/writers/creators/etc who were actually fans of a known project they were working on?

There's always that PR talk of, for example, an actor or director got a leading part in a superhero movie and they say they were fans of this superhero. They show off a comic book or toy of that character on their social media that they may or may not just bought them at that moment. But if that project underperforms, they go all "Well, I wasn't fan of it anyways."

I don't want that PR talk, I want to know if there was actually someone who was a legit fan of that piece of media and they got the chance to be involved in it. All I can think is Henry Cavill with Witcher. Even before the show was announced (or just announced), there's been interviews of him saying he has read the Witcher books and played the games and he wanted to play as Geralt if he got the chance.

[Demon City] The main writer goes into a full meltdown and requests people to sign affidavits if they criticize the project, so much so that the creator has to make an update just to tell people not to do that.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/diyrpgproductions/demon-city-the-ultimate-horror-rpg/posts/3387408

Absolute madness in the comments right now. Zak Smith "Z" is the main writer of the project, Mike is the head of the book. They've been telling backers that the book was weeks away from being finished for over two years. Obviously, the backers are getting restless after being lied to for two years regarding the state of the project.

Every single backer that posts WILL get a message from Zak, telling them to sign an affidavit with some nutty clauses :

> They then must publicly apologize and admit they were wrong--publish that here and in any other venue of our choosing and re-publish that anytime anyone else makes the same or a similar/related claim they must challenge that liar directly (by name) and explain they've seen whatever it is that proves it wrong, any time it comes up anywhere online, until such time as they are no longer physically able. They can't erase or otherwise "sunset" those comments and it must be using the same name and account and can't be one that they stop using. Etc.

Honestly, it seems like the guy's having a full meltdown. He's known to be litigious, but this is on a whole other level.

(Also, update wise, here's two quotes, espaced by two years.)

AUGUST 2019 :

> Based on Shawn’s timetable we are looking at the beginning to mid-September for the final touches on the layout to be completed! Our proofer believes they can knock out the edits on the book by the beginning of October to mid-October and once that’s all patched together, it’ll go off to Friesen’s for manufacturing.

JULY 2021 :

> Shawn and Zak are currently working on some leftover facing pages in the layout and Shawn's goal is to wrap up the layout within the next week or two and dive in to the proofing himself so we can get it done quicker (ain't he sweet?!).

How do researchers account for complications when using slave narratives from the Federal Writers' Project?

From 1936-1938 ~2,000 first person accounts of slavery were recorded as part of the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) of the Works Progress Administration. Together those interviews create a massive resource for exploring slavery in the United States.

The 1930s were still a volatile time for race relations in the United States, with overt and structural racism permeating all aspects of life. I've heard, for example, that interviews could differ dramatically based on the race of the interviewer.

My question is how do researchers who use this collection (or similar collections) account for, and maybe even incorporate, potential bias in collection process when trying to understand events that happened decades before the interview? Can you control for these variables, or do you trust that with 2,000 data points that you overcome bias to arrive at a clearer story? What is current best practice?

Thanks in advance!
