During the last years of the Caucasian war (1817-1864) the Russian imperial policies in the Caucasus grew bolder as the years went by. In the west the Circassians were fighting a bloody war and in the east the Chechen-Dagestani Imamate had resisted Russian rule for over 25 years under Imam Shamil. This war caused massive damage to the resisting highlanders and the Russian army was on the brink of victory. The Western and Eastern front tried to unite several times into a unified North Caucasian Imamate like under the uprising of Sheikh Mansur (1785-1791) but it failed due to the largely pro-Russian regions of todays North Ossetia and Ingushetia. But that changed in 1858 when over 5000 armed Ingush started one of the biggest uprisings in the Caucasus. The main instigators of this uprising were Chandir Archakov, Magomed Mazurov, Dzhagostuko Bekhoev, Mullah Bashir Ashiev and Urusbi Mugaev. The rebellion was caused by the forced relocation of Ingush farmers to bigger cities, like Nazran and the recent law which disarmed the highlanders.
The Ingush rebels tried to storm the strongly fortified city of Nazran several times but to no avail. The situation grew out of control and an army stationed in Vladikavkaz under General Zotov, was sent to Ingushetia to quell the uprising. On the 25th May the rebels sent a delegation of 16 people to General Zotov. The General however captured four of them as hostages and demanded an end of the unrest. Outraged by this, the Ingush freedom fighters tried to yet again storm the fortress of Nazran but suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat. This uprising didn't go unnoticed by Imam Shamil and he tried to reach them twice but failed. The Russian army eventually suppressed the rebels and 4 of the leaders were hanged, Joghast Bekhoev managed to escape imprisonment and subsequent hanging.
Even though the uprising itself failed, it still benefited the Ingush nation as it spoiled some of the plans of Russia. One of them was the relocation of Russians settlers to Southern Ingushetia. The Russian Tsar knew that carrying on with his plan could lead to an even bigger insurgence, escalating the Caucasian war.
