Favorite Math Puns

Some of my non-mathematician friends have started asking me to tell them “forbidden” math knowledge. This started when I told them about how a consequence of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem is that there are always two antipodal points on Earth with the same atmospheric pressure and temperature, which absolutely baffled them. I've also told them about other bizarre things like weird facts about cardinality and ordinals, the Banach-Tarski paradox, and non-orientable surfaces. What are your favorite absurd or non-intuitive math facts?

I’m getting really into history of math, and when researching about it, there’s a lot of really interesting stories and people. Learning about how Euclid essentially laid the groundwork for modern mathematics using only geometry and logic is one of my favorite facts; or the famous story of W. R. Hamilton was walking with his wife and suddenly had a revelation that led to quarternions and non-commutative multiplication.

I know there’s a lot of fun stories like those out there, so what’s your favorite fact?

Trying to find some new, fresh good math YouTube channels (other streaming services are okay, of course). If possible please include why you feel they are "good" channels, and what range of topics they include. Thanks! 🧮

They don't have to be centered on math but that should be a precedent as in, it should be a major focus.

I'm going to be driving for about 16 hours over the next couple days. I'm nearing the end of the current podcasts I'm listening to. Any math-based podcast recommendations?

Preferably something that's easy to listen to while I'm on the road -- a little lighter on details and specifics and more about general ideas or maybe narrative/history.

Hey guys, I know a thread like this is posted regularly but IMO they're always fun, and I don't see too much content on this sub otherwise so may as well do it again!

For me, I'm really liking "canonical". When I argued with my brother and he told me my argument was outlandish, I just replied that it's the canonical argument against his point and if had never even heard that argument before he probably wasn't knowledgeable about the topic. I thought that was a pretty solid argument.

I'm liking "canonical" especially so because it gives some notion of "you'd come to the same conclusion on your own if you grappled with the issue" and I think there isn't really a proper adjective with that meaning besides it.

Thoughts? Looking forward to hear your math terms!

Mine is secant (sec). sec is defined to be the hypotenuse (hyp) of a right triangle over the adjacent (adj) side to the angle (hyp/adj). Because of this, it is also defined as the inverse to cosine (cos). Not to be confused with arccosine (arccos, more commonly and stupidly written as cos^-1 -_-), but it’s rather 1/cos. Ig you can call that a reciprocal :P

cos used to be my favorite trig function before i learned about sec. Idk why it was my favorite, but i much preferred it over sine (sin) and tangent (tan). After learning about sec, tho, i thought it was much cooler than cos.

I also like cotangent (cot), which is defined to be adj/opp (opposite), and is directly the reciprocal of tan.

I can't count how many different things are named "normal" or "regular."

Debating on when to leave the funeral home with a family to get to church on time causes me Big Anxiety TM. Some churches will skin you alive for getting there 15 minutes early, the family decides to all use the bathroom at the same time right when you're trying to get them to say goodbye, the family that hasn't interacted with the body all morning decides that they will cry over the casket for 20 minutes, or I can't find my hearse driver because they fucked off to get coffee.

I've never been late but it takes a lot out of me to heard cats on the morning of Mass.

favorite : i used to love topology when i was in college , it just felt so natural + you can use your imagination and visualisation to help you solve a lot of problems

least favorite : differencial equations, it just didn't click

Though he recently announced he was going to quit at the end of this term, so now one half of my brain is happy because this is the last week of school but the other half is depressed because he's quitting ._.
