I'm aiming to release my first album within a month and keep deliberating about whether to include the opening track or not as it repeatedly mentions a world-famous Canadian singer and references some of her greatest hits.
The song is not derogatory whatsoever - in fact it's strongly complementary towards her and her singing ability. It is, however, a bit irreverently sexual (but not at all about her).
Despite that, my fear is a takedown or even legal action. Some googling shows that, in the USA at least, copyright doesn't cover titles, names, short phrases, and slogans, conversely, I worry that a lawyer might argue it is an exploitative purpose, which I don't think it is - more of an ode to her, referencing an experience I had.
The only song I can think of which has a similar issue is this 90's pop song from the UK which repeatedly referenced Tarantino and seemed to make it into the top 10 of the charts without issue.
Can anybody weigh in or point me towards something more legally definitive? Any other examples of. songs of this nature? The song's title doesn't mention her - if I made sure the lyrics don't appear on iTunes etc would that negate any potential issue?
Finally, I'm under no illusion that anybody will actually ever even listen to it and am set to make nothing but loss from it, so I'm I worrying over nothing?
Thanks a lot.
I was checking out discography of Poison. Multiple album of 5x-10x platinum. David Bowie, Hall & Oates more albums of course but sold consistently gold. Do album sales tie into how much is spent on promotion and touring? I assume Poison was on tour for years straight. While Bowie/H&O were in the studio.
I was stoked to see a new song from Sublime today. But when I pressed play, some wild Latin hip hop started playing. Because some rando somehow is using the very-much-owned-and-branded name of SUBLIME. And now stuff Iβm not into is on my Release Radar. This has happened many times over the years!! Please fix this!!!
I feel like my obvious answer is Taylor becoming an English Teacher, but specially for High School. BeyoncΓ© would definitely teach a Whale watching class.
(reposted after the mods rightfully deleted the previous one due to being too generically about "celebrities" instead of music personalities)
For me personally two names would be Selena Gomez and DJ Khaled. Selena has been discussed plenty of times in this sub and right now I kinda get it, so I guess I'm just not in the right demographic to enjoy her.
DJ Khaled however still baffles me. Everyone seems to hate him and agree he's a talentless schmuck, yet he keeps making bank. Go figure.
i was reading up on something years back and found his name. Now, I cant find it anywhere. He was tattooing in the 50's or 60's (just a guess) Thank you! i have tried everything on google to find his name and nothing.
I saw an article where Doja Cat said that she nearly collaborated with Billie Ellish for Billie's song "Bellyache". I think it's safe to say that both artists are more famous now than when Billie made that song. But it made me wonder, what other artists had songs with a similar scenario but actually collaborated? I'm sure there's many, but I can't remember. I would love if you guys could help me out :)
I got a kitty recently and I thought about naming him DalΓ. I liked his original name so we kept him but then started realizing other art names that imo sound great for pets, MonΓ©t, GaudΓ, so i want more names to add on for future occasions. They can be from any form of art. What do you suggest?
i will also assume he is a mumble rapper despite never hearing one of his songs

So an artist that has either gathered a huge and long lasting fanbase or simply just left an impact and stayed relevant in the industry far beyond what their mere sales figures would suggest.
I instantly think of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lucky by Britney Spears, Fake Smile by Ariana Grande, and Welcome to Hollywood by BeyoncΓ©.
Can you name any songs where the artist talks about being famous and/or being in the public eye (whether positively or badly)? Do you feel for the artists that talk about the struggles and perils of fame or do you tend to shrug it off and roll your eyes?
i remember listening to early doja cat stuff back in 2014/2015. was pretty cool when i realized she's like one of the big mainstream pop artists now.

i was also into yung lean fairly early on, but that was more as he was blowing up, not really before it like with doja cat.
