The Mercedes Engine saga is possibly related to the FIA rulings on cooling air in the plenum

I'll keep this short:

  1. Red Bull has been poaching Mercedes Engine experts over the season and made a curious inquiry with the FIA in September that could only have come from inside sources: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mercedes-dismisses-special-solution-amid-red-bull-fia-engine-query/6659984/
  2. The FIA ruled in October that they are not going to do anything about the complaint: https://www.planetf1.com/news/red-bull-mercedes-trick-complaint-quashed/
  3. Bottas' engine penalties in Italy and Russia (Both in September), indicate Mercedes was testing something with new Engine materials or similar.
  4. Mercedes has seen to be MEGA in FP1 (Before the engine map settings are frozen for the weekend) and later found to be super slow. Again, like they were testing something with the engine.

Conclusions and Speculation:

  1. Mercedes are indeed doing something to super cool the air going into the ICE and have figured out a way to represent the temperature in the plenum differently to the sensor, thus defeating the checks.
  2. This can be inferred through their odd choice in only swapping the ICE components of their power unit, while maintaining the other parts as the same. The power increase from just an ICE change are astonishing to say the least in the middle of a season.
  3. If, as others have speculated, this is purely done with the aim to "increase reliability", that would not hold up to scrutiny, since new engine materials that help tolerate higher combustion scenarios while rated for a shorter lifetime mileage is not a reliability upgrade, but a performance upgrade. The technical delegate has the liberty to refuse to entertain a change with a performance gain in mind if it can be proven that the power unit has additions that lower the mileage and increase perf as many members of Mercedes have represented to the media.
  4. The curiosity with the sensor in the plenum is very odd. The FIA has not done anything here, especially seeing how these checks are impossible to be done in the middle of a lap when the actual readings are made. I'd expect them to take this up more aggressively now that we see a ridiculous power boost down the straights for the Mercedes engine in Hamiltons car WHILE STILL CARRYING MONACO LEVELS OF DOWNFORCE.

tl;dr: Mercedes waited for a rul

3x3 Modular Engine Cooling System had no effect

I’ve been working on a 4 prop seaplane in stormworks, it uses 2 3x3 modular engines, each with 3 cylinders.

Each 3 cylinder engine has: 3 air intakes 1 fuel intake 2 coolent manifolds

For each: 1 manifold connects to an open air 5x5 electric radiator with 2 fluid pumps

1 manifold connects to 2 connected 3x3 open air electric radiators with 1 fluid pump

Even so after ~2-3 mins of flying regardless of rps or fuel intake the engines will overheat.

I’ve been searching online for how to successfully cool a 3x3 engine with no success. Any suggestions/things that could help?

Note: this plane is a work-in-progress

Modular Engine Cooling - bugged or what?

I know this is a fairly frequent topic, I really quite like the versatility of modular engines and I also like having engines that rev a bit more. I absolutely despise playing this game with "optimal" engines that operate at what, 6 RPS? You can barely hear them, to me it completely and utterly breaks any immersion.

The modular engines are fun to set up and tinker with, up until the point you get to cooling. It seems like no matter what or how I set up cooling - they will always accumulate heat until they start overheating.

Whenever I've used the normal diesel engines on boats I've used a liquid-liquid cooling system to great effect, this same system on a modular just does not work - no matter the size or how many pumps I add.

I've tried having more separate loops, each with their own cooling system and manifold. It just won't work.

Are they bugged? Poorly balanced? Or is this just the overall design of the game? To have all engines operate at such low RPS's that they sound as if they're about to choke any second?

I have since stopped using modular engines entirely, they're simple not worth the hassle when it comes to the cooling. Always the same issue. :/

Need Help with Modular Engine Cooling

For quite some time now I have been having a hard time with cooling modular engines. Most recently I have been working on a VTOL and using two 2 cylinder 3x3 engines. When flying at 20 RPS in hover mode, the temps stabilize at around 78C, when in plane mode the engines will overheat. I am using 2 cooling manifolds each with a 5x5 radiator PER CYLINDER and it still will not stay cool. I am also getting around 40 L/S of flow through each loop.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
