Be My Baby by the Ronettes: A Thesis

This post is going to defend one thesis throughout the majority of its length: By My Baby by the Ronettes is the most important piece of Western Music of the last 60 years.

A few main points before I get into it.

  • I am incredibly limited in my knowledge (as any single individual is). I did not live in the 60's and I haven't heard all music ever made. I will try to rely on research and facts to support my points, but of course there will be gaps. I strongly encourage anyone and everyone in the comments to either offer refuting or supporting evidence, because I'm very interested in learning more.
  • The scope of the thesis is (as mentioned above) only from 1960 onwards. We are mainly looking at contemporary popular music and how it achieved the form we know today.
  • The evidence used faces two main caveats. First, much of it is based off of personal accounts, so it's hard to corroborate it. Second, quantifying musical influence is very difficult, meaning a lot of the evidence has limited value in an in depth investigation.
  • While I am treating this post with care and attention, it is NOT a formal investigation. There will be errors and it won't have nearly as much research as I could conceivably collect.
  • Most sources will either be linked or referenced, but some may slip through the cracks. Wikipedia will contain a lot of the sources referenced if you look in the references at the bottom of the pages for The Ronettes, Phil Spector, Be My Baby, or other related topics.

With that out of the way, lets dive into Be My Baby.

Section 1.A: The Ronettes

The three girls began singing together from a young age (Ronnie and Estelle were sisters and Nedra was their cousin) and were harmonizing at family gatherings when Ronnie was as young as 8 (Nedra Ross Interview, 1982).

Once they were older, the group began to sing at small gigs from Bar Mitzvahs to amateur shows (and temporarily had some of their other relatives involved). 55 Years Ago Today, The Beach Boys unleashed their "Good Vibrations" onto the world for the first time.

It was 55 years ago today when Brian Wilson unleashed one of his greatest masterpieces onto the world for the first time.

The 45 single cover for \"Good Vibrations\".

"Good Vibrations" had been recorded over a period of many months. Brian started work on the song all the way back on February 19th, 1966. The song was recorded over a period of no fewer than 19 recording sessions, at four different studios throughout Hollywood, and at a cost of between 50,000 and 75,000 dollars (over 400,000-600,000 in today's dollars). Over 90 hours of tape was consumed in the making of the song.

The song's genesis came about from Brian's interest in extrasensory perception and cosmic vibrations. Cousin Mike Love wrote the lyrics on the way to the studio, inspired by the fledgling flower power movement. Middle brother and drummer Dennis Wilson was originally due to sing the lead vocal on the verses, but due to a bout of laryngitis, baby brother and lead guitarist Carl Wilson took over vocal duties. Dennis did contribute the Hammond organ solo during the "gotta keep those lovin' good vibrations a-happenin' with her" section.

"Good Vibrations" is perhaps most famous for it's use of tape splicing. Brian constructed different sections of the song separately, forming what became known as "pocket symphonies". He then spliced them together to form the final product. "Good Vibrations" is also noteworthy for popularizing the idea of "using the studio as an instrument". While this idea was first practiced by the like of Phil Spector, Brian, along with George Martin and the Beatles took this concept to a whole new level throughout 1966. The song also featured some novel instruments seldom heard on a pop-rock song, such as the Electro-Theremin and the jaw harp.

"Good Vibrations" was released on October 10th, 1966. The flip side was the instrumental "Let's Go Away for a While" from their recently released Pet Sounds LP. It quickly became the Beach Boys' biggest hit of their career. It soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became their first UK #1. The single sold 230,000 copies within four days of release in America, and over 50,000 copies in the first two weeks of availability in the UK. It was the group's first million selling single.

A number of music videos were produced for the song. One music video [showed the group dressed up as fireme

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
