Game Preview: AFC East title within reach

Contrary to popular belief, it has not been decades since the Patriots last captured the AFC East championship. It was only four years ago that New England squeaked out a win in Miami to capture the 1997 division title.

In fact, since finishing 6-10 in 1995, the Patriots have only suffered through one losing season, that being last year when they finished 5-11. Yet, if you listen to folks around New England, you'd think the Patriots recent demise puts them on par with the Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals of the world.

Fortunately, the short stay in the doldrums can end Sunday with a victory over the 1-14 Carolina Panthers at Ericsson Stadium. A simple win over a one-win team on the verge of setting a record for futility will give the Patriots the AFC East title. Forget what the Jets and Dolphins do; if the Patriots win, they win the division with no other help needed.

Sure, Bill Belichick will do his best Lou Holtz impression trying to sell his team on the fact that Carolina has lost eight games by six points or less and by a combined 23 points. He will show them how the Panthers lost three times on the game's final play — overtime losses to San Francisco and Washington and a last-second loss to New Orleans. He'll tell them that Carolina has either led or been tied in the second half in 10 of 15 games. He will extol the virtues of George Seifert, who before taking over the Panthers, had the highest winning percentage of any head coach in league history.

Hello everyone, Alpinia here, and I'm proud to bring to you one of the largest updates to Kaiserreich so far - 0.18 'Forest Brothers'. The new reworked nations brought to you this time around are none other than Bhutan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Wales and White Ruthenia. But of course, it doesn't stop there, with a whole host of literally hundreds of other additions, improvements and fixes, as detailed in the full patch notes enclosed.

• Kaiserreich now has its own implementation of Player-Led Peace Conferences and the State Transfer Tool. These can be activated via game rules, though if you are in debug mode then the State Transfer Tool is available by default. Note that, if you decide to use the PLPC or STT mods anyhow, it won’t break anything - you just won’t get our updates to them.
• Japan’s intervention in China has been modified to be more in line with the vanilla version.
• Japan’s "Fading Sun" peace mechanic with China has now been changed. Russia and China are dealt with by separate scripted peace events, and Japan has different levels of surrender ranging from minor defeat to total capitulation - they no longer lose their faction and all ability to declare war the moment Korea and Manchuria are occupied.
• Total download size of the base mod has been reduced by ~50%, thanks to standardising most gfx to .png format.
• The remainder of the former rework to Kaiserreich’s naval system has now been removed, bringing the naval system fully in line with vanilla's, save for names.

Yes the Buffalo Bills have won two games this season and yes they were eliminated from the playoff race a long time ago. But teams like this can be dangerous and that's not being written to make sure you pick up next week's copy of PFW. In fact, a team that was eliminated in, say, October, can often regroup and re-focus its energy on the latter part of the season with the future in mind. The players play with next year's roster spots up for grabs; they want to show the first-year coaching staff that they are worth keeping and can overcome adversity. Yes, they are playing out the string, but they knew when they came to New England in November that their season was essentially over and they played the Patriots incredibly tough and, in fact, gave the offense fits.
