>DOHA (Al Jazeera) -- Controversial whistleblowers Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden, and "Witness K" are among some of the thousands of people taking advantage of the Icelandic American Refugees Act, with all three reportedly having fled to Iceland over the past weeks to claim Icelandic citizenship.
>Chelsea Manning had disclosed classified information about United States military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, including atrocities such as the July 12 2007 Baghdad airstrike where the United States Army killed 12 innocent Iraqi civilians - including two journalists - and the 2009 Granai airstrike where the United States Air Force killed 147 innocent Afghan civilians - including 93 children and at least 32 women. Manning's disclosure of classified US military documents brought to light the killings of over 66,000 innocent Iraqi civilians and revealed "how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents" in Afghanistan. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in military prison due to her whistleblowing activities, and had her sentence commuted in 2017 after serving over 7 years in prison.
