SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Spartan Visuals vs Descriptions: A Look Through The Ages

To preface, this post is not me claiming that this interpretation of visuals are canon or better than anyone else’s, on the contrary, this post is attempting to highlight the often flawed discussions people have about Spartan visuals. ALL interpretations of the visuals are great in their own way and there is none that is β€œbetter” or β€œworse” than the other. This is not a post meant to reignite petty arguments, but to point out (in my opinion) flaws of a few talking points I’ve noticed.

(A massive thanks to /u/JonArc for their work on the commissioned piece below!)

”Camping”...

Over the years, the visuals and descriptions of Halo has changed. The series gone through a number of styles, designs, and aesthetic choices. From ships, to weapons, to characters to buildings, almost everything has changed in some way.

With these changes, a question that always seems to come about is β€œwhat is canon?” What’s the correct visual for this scene?

At the same time, another question is β€œhow should something appear?” What design cues should be used and focused on? What allows someone to glance at a book cover or read a passage in a novel or watch a cutscene and know exactly where the scene takes place or what era it’s in, etc.

There are a lot of different answers for this question, and a few variances of it. None get brought up more than the idea of Spartans.

The titular icons of the Halo universe, they’ve gone through some changes as time has gone on, probably the most out of everything, and over the years, the community has tended to fall into one of four camps of two highly contrasting styles:

Camp #1 are the group who don’t really care. A Spartan can look like whatever. They don’t get hung up on appearance for any reason. A Spartan is a Spartan is a Spartan.

Camp #2 want Spartans to look like heroic individualists. They want each Spartan to look unique and have clashing styles to highlight the individual personality. Fred cannot look like John who cannot look like Locke who cannot look like Emile who cannot look like Thorne, etc. Each Spartan must be an individual icon, even if it might logically clash with what that Spartan is stated to be or what that Spartan is doing. The mission doesn’t matter: the look does. Lore explanations are secondary.

Camp #3 are the uniform β€œpurists”. They want things to be β€œjust like the old days”. Spartans to be uniform, utilitarian, they want them to look like they do on the cover of The Fall of Reach and in Hal

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
