Background
While hip-hop has always been more about the natural wit that comes along with punchlines and rhyme schemes, the genre has always had an open role for the vocalist who can bring together a track in just the perfect manner, providing a performance that your favorite rapper simply cannot. Don Toliver has proven to be just that in his young career thus far, rising to prominence with a feature on Travis Scottβs βCanβt Sayβ in 2018. Since, he has proven himself further through his own music, with projects Donny Womack & Heaven or Hell building Don a reliable fanbase. Nowadays, heβs one of the hottest names for a feature in the entire genre, with connections with some of the largest albums and artists; evidenced by the stacked feature list on Life Of A Don. Travis Scott, Baby Keem, SoFaygo, and Donβs own girlfriend Kali Uchis highlight a team that complement him through this crisp sonic adventure.
For months and months, Don teased Life Of A Don on social media, at one point citing a July release date. But, as artists do, the album was delayed without much of a hint for a release. Truthfully, us as listeners are very lucky Don released when he did - because just a few weeks later, Cactus Jack, his label, has been dealing with a controversy weβre all aware of - which could have put the optics of releasing a project in jeopardy.
Review
One of the first things thatβs noticed upon listening to the album is how damn expensive some of these beats sound. The producer team - just as star studded as the feature list - is a well-rounded group of popular hitmakers, with some familiar faces such as Chase B & Mike Dean teaming up with other stars like Metro Boomin on βSwangin on Westheimer, Cardo Got Wings on βFlocky Flockyβ, and Mustard on βGet Throwedβ. Itβs very clear that no expense was spared for the audio equipment and casting for the album; perhaps Don got quite the boost to his budget after the sales of Heaven Or Hell. The albumβs production does a lot of the heavy lifting, even more so with Lossless Audio, perhaps even masking some of its downfalls.
Before the albumβs release, Don said on social media that one of his goals for the project was t

What do you guys think about the above mentioned album? For me personally itβs the first album for a few months I can listen every track without feeling the need to skip. Itβs probably not really a rap album but I was just wondering how other people might feel about this album? To me it feels kinda atmospheric to listen to it, donβt know how exactly to explain

His singing, the instrumental, especially the synths, the drop, and impactful drums. Everything is just heavenly
Edit: My top 3 would probably be Can't Feel My Legs, No Idea and SOW (in no particular order)
