I absolutely love this movie and have seen it many, many times. I always felt it was a much more mature Disney movie that just didn't pick up the steam it deserved at the time of release. It also happens to have one of the best soundtracks from any Disney movie. Those Powerline songs are absolute bangers.

My daughter is OBSESSED with Disney. In fact, she doesn’t want to be called by her real name any more–she insists on being named after Elsa, Queen of Ice. She has all the merchandise and all the movies on DVD. Every time Disney releases a new movie in the cinema, she insists she has to see it. Frozen, Moana, Mulan, she knows it by heart and will spoil it if you ask her.
Last Christmas I was at loss on what to give her. Encanto had just come out and not only had she watched it three times, she already had bought every single piece of merchandise that came with the movie. “Surprise me,” she said with a wink, when I begged her for gift ideas.
After weeks of wracking my brain, I decided to just search the Internet for the perfect gift. Before long, I came across an old video-borrowing site, just off the edge of the Dark Web. There was an old Disney DVD for sale. It was made in the old 2D animation, and not the new 3D state-of-the-art animation like the modern Disney films. It was advertised as the lost Disney film, something they made but never released. In fact, it had no official title. The website simply said: The Lost Disney Movie: Available Now!
It was relatively cheap too. Only $25. With free shipping.
It came just in time for Christmas. Elsa squealed in joy when she ripped open the wrapping paper.
“I thought I watched every one!” she shouted.
“This one’s special,” I winked at her.
Elsa insisted on watching it the moment we finished dinner and I obliged, running it on the old TV. The movie was nothing really special. Just the same old Disney plot: a princess lives on an island her entire life, finds a handsome, shipwrecked prince, falls in love, etc. Honestly, it was the cheesiest thing I ever came across.
But Elsa loved it. She wanted to watch it again…and again.
“It’s bedtime, darling,” I said at last, when the clock struck midnight.
“No!” she whined, her eyes still fixated on the screen. So I yanked the plug out of the television. Elsa still hadn’t moved. Her eyes were still glued to the screen.
I couldn’t help but peek at the screen. My heart dropped to my stomach when I realised the movie was still playing. The characters were dancing and laughing across the island.
“Elsa? It’s time for bed, sweetie,” I called out again, shakily. This was not normal. I reminded myself to call the electrician when Christmas was over.
“Later,” Elsa muttered without looking at me.

I think my favorite part of this movie is how different it is from every other Disney movie. No real villain. No central love interest. No death that was super central to the current plot (yes, it had a death, but it was more the backstory for Abuela’s actions). No adventure — it all took place in one central location.
This was just a movie about family and relationships. And I loved that. It’s so rare to get such solid characterization and pure focus on how the characters interact with one another.
Reckon it’s possible we get “mini Avengers movie” consisting of strictly D+ show characters?
It wouldn’t be the next big team up moving on Avengers scale per say but just a team up movie with the series characters?

I’m watching the original Peter Pan movie with my son, and watching this as an adult gives me a completely different perspective that when I was a kid. After a bit of looking into it, the original Peter Pan story tells a story of a boy who never grows up, kidnaps children (lost boys), and kills them once they hit puberty. Those that survive this attack grow up to become the pirates on the island. Disney gets around this by saying that the lost boys don’t grow older, but in the book, they do. In this movie, we could follow hook as the protagonist trying to save these kidnapped children and trying to stop Peter Pan.

The movie had A list Hollywood actors, an international cast, an A list director, stellar special effects, a plot that was different and deep which is tailor for critical acclaim, yet it was received as the MCU's worst thing, below the Disney+ shows like Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye, below all the other MCU 2020 movies like Shang-Chi and Black Widow, and even below movies that critics or audiences didn't like that much such as The Dark World and Captain Marvel

I know I’m not the first person to hop on the Encanto ban wagon but I haven’t seen an animated movie this good since... Well, since ever really. I thought that the way they handled screen time for so many characters was amazing. Another thing I loved about the movie was the music, especially “We don’t talk about Bruno” which is my personal favorite and “Under the Surface” that has some serious topics to it about self-worth which I’m glad Disney was not afraid to go into. Breaking away from having a clear cut villain is definitely something they may need to expand on too. The whole film was a chefs kiss for me.
