Disclaimer - this was done quick and dirty style so I may not have all my facts straight. And it's not like decoding utility rates is easy to begin with. Also, these comparisons are all based on the SDGE TOU-DR1 (time of use) rate or a reasonable equivalent from another utility. This is the rate plan I have and I believe it is the most common plan for homes with newly installed solar like mine. All numbers should reflect the Jan 2022 price increases, are based on weekday summer rates to try and keep it simple, and don't reflect baseline allowances because I believe those are all similar between utilities and can therefore be zeroed out of the equation. We're talking broad strokes here people. Anyways...
Everyone always brings up Hawaii when it comes to the "who has the worst electrical rates in the nation" contest. So I decided to look at them first. What are there time of use rates? Well, it looks like TOU is relatively new for Hawaiian Electric Industries (the utility) but they are easy to find on their website:
https://www.hawaiianelectric.com/products-and-services/save-energy-and-money/time-of-use-program
I chose Oahu, since that's where the vast majority of people in Hawaii live. Their rates:
$0.45 on-peak 5pm - 10pm
$0.37 off-peak 10pm - 9am
$0.18 super off-peak. Which is 9am - 5pm. Weird time period for the cheapest power. Maybe because solar is everywhere there?
So yeah, seems expensive except holy crap during most of the daytime electricity is cheap. Other islands are a little more expensive than Oahu but that's to be expected with the lower populations.
So how does that compare to California and more specifically the twats nice people at SDGE? Let's look at the big three starting with Pacific Gas & Electric:
https://www.pge.com/en_US/residential/rate-plans/rate-plan-options/time-of-use-base-plan/time-of-use-plan.page
These numbers are based on the E-TOU-C plan which they are promoting and which seems very similar to SDGE's TOU-DR1:
$0.42 on-peak 4pm - 9pm
$0.36 all other times of the day
Just the two time brackets for PG&E. So sorta similar to Hawaii pricing, but I would say definitely more expensive because of that cheap $0.18 daytime rate they get over at the islands.
Next up is Southern California Edison. How do they compare?
https://www.sce.com/residential/rates/Time-Of-Use-Residential-Rate-Plans
This is based on the TOU-D-4-9PM plan:
$0.49 on-peak 4pm - 9pm
$0.30 all other times of the day
Again they keep it si

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!

For those of you who don't remember, Craig Mazin's Chernobyl was one of those streaming TV miniseries events that seem to crop up every so often, a la Tiger King or Squid Game. For about a month back in 2019 it seemed like it was the only thing anybody was talking about on reddit, and memes still occasionally crop up about β3.6 rontgenβ and βyou didnβt see any graphite because it WASNβT THEREβ and so on. I have to admit I only saw the show in 2020 after getting HBO during the lockdown, and to be honest itβs really, really good. Seriously, if you havenβt seen it yet, take a look- itβs exciting, terrifying, and still manages to be decently informative about the technicals of a very interesting engineering disaster. The actors deliver some amazing performances, especially whoever was playing Dyatlov, the chief engineer on duty the night the reactor exploded. Heβs just one of those classic characters that you love to hate, like Joffrey Baratheon or Dolores Umbridge. Heβs like every stupid, terrible boss youβve ever had. What a disgusting, psychopathic prick.
Did I mention that Dyatlov is a real person, who died in 1995, and not a cartoon villain? Did I mention that he wasnβt actually even close to the most responsible party to the destruction of reactor #4 that night?
The real life Dyatlov was not an amazing guy, to be sure. He was a tough and demanding boss, and didnβt really tolerate failure. But he had friends who seemed to like him. He had a family. Nobody who knew him ever painted him as someone who liked to throw shit at people and scream in their faces for daring to question him. He had no arguments with any of the operators in the control room on the night of the accident, and the whole thing proceeded basically to plan. Though the operators had some trouble keeping things going while the reactor was in such a low power regime, nobody was treating this like it was anything but a normal night. Then, at the end of the experiment, Akimov pressed the button to shut down the reactor. Not because he was panicking at rising energy levels-- energy levels were actually stable, they had risen from 200 to 215 MJ MW or so over about 30 sec but nobody was concerned. He pressed AZ-5 because that was what you press to shut down the reactor under any circumstance. They basically went βok, test is done, shut down the reactor so we can do the planned maintenance.β And then when they pressed the button it exploded.
After the acciden
