Dior Homme Puns

This review is for Dior Homme Original which is the 2011 one repackaged. The 2011 is the 2005 slightly tweaked to satisfy IFRA regulations. Confusing stuff.

My first encounter with this was about ten years ago, I was on a fragrance day out with a friend and he said you must try this, I took a big sniff and it almost made me cough, it felt very stuffy and not my type of thing. Recently I got a decant of the Intense and Original and it just clicked, I finally got it. It wasn't up close, it was in the aura about a foot away from the scent that managed to persist almost the entire length of the fragrance with such dense presence and with nothing that offended my nose throughout.

The notes of dusty cacao, powdery iris, and the leather all seem to overlap in a Venn diagram with Dior Homme being the centre piece. Throughout the fragrance there'll be times when one facet is more dominant than the other but it never strays so far from the core so as to be unrecognisable so it is quite linear. The similarities between these notes merge beautifully in a seamless way that leaves no bumps on the journey. For me it's the same feeling as when you sit in a room just before sunset and the next thing you know it's dark, it just creeps up on you without you realising, no sudden movements or sharp edges.

I love the warmth of this fragrance, it has a plushness that every time I smell it conjures up a mythical fabric, maybe suede-like, maybe velour, maybe thick cotton, but none of these really. It creates an abstract sensation for me, one of pure comfort. There is a physicality to this scent that means I don't just have a smell, I feel it as though I'm touching something, it becomes an object in my experience.

It's a dry scent, especially if compared to the Intense version which sits on a sweeter base. Maybe this keeps the scent formal as it has a standoffish aspect with this dryness arising from the iris and bitter cacao. This represents the duality of this fragrance, if I am to find one, and it has taken work to find one because it's just so dam smooth it feels almost criminal to take apart the stitching and analyse it. The duality is one of cosy warm comfort simultaneously maintaining a clear distance and boundary, not quite a coldness but rather an assertion of self-control. To draw a further analogy there is an inviting warm heart but also a clear and sharp mind that comes with it.

I bought this a few days ago, I love the smooth woody smell of this. I sprayed it around my neck and forearms ~6 shots altogether, however the fragrance seems to fade within an hour. Am I overdoing it, am I going nose blind to it? I don't wanna be like the nutter who emptied 50ml in one day and choking everyone in my wake.

What's the best way to apply this fragrance for max longevity, on the skin or on clothes?

From my online search, it looks like none of the major department stores (John Lewis, Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, Debenham’s) carry it...and likewise for The Perfume Shop.

I'm hoping that i may find it at airport Duty Free in Edinburgh or Gatwick / Heathrow - can't recall where my layover is. :) I'm just trying to cover all the bases since time will be very limited in transit. Love it! LOOOOOVE IT! Just in case I didn’t say it before, love it!! Overlooked this one for a good while. Ordered a decant, wore it the past couple days. Big ol bottle on the way. Absolute summer masterpiece! Perfection in simplicity - 10/10 in my opinion! Don’t care about the performance because most freshies suck in that department so I’ll just re-apply and be happy to do so because applying it is actually super refreshing.

Wanted to share my happiness - yayyyy

I got a travel size of Dior H’omme original from Scentbox over a year ago. The first time I sprayed it, I did not like it. I must have just not been in the mood for it but it didn’t do it for me and it sat in my drawer of lost decants forever. I revisit this drawer from time to time and retest things when I’m bored with my current collection. I sprayed this on and I was BLOWN AWAY! How could something that I didn’t like instantly become one of the best fragrances I’ve ever smelled?? Needless to say, I’ve been wearing it here and there at home in the evenings and have only grown to love it more the more I experience it.

I ordered a bottle of what I thought was the classic. It got in today and I couldn’t wait to spray some on my hand. I primed the atomizer and let one off in the air and couldn’t wait for that beautiful iris note to blow me away… only, it did not. In fact, what I smelled was something completely different. It was disappointing to say the least. Not because what I smelled was bad, just because it wasn’t what I expected. In fact, it smelled quite good.

Having heard all the reviews about how bad the 2020 version was, I realized pretty quickly what had happened. So I chalked this one up to a loss but is it actually a loss? It wasn’t what I wanted but it is a great fragrance in its own right. It smells very good, it is obviously versatile and very wearable. I have a feeling this will get a lot of compliments. It reminds me of BDC but with some different notes that I actually prefer. I have no idea why the marketing team chose to give it the same name as the original masterpiece. I feel like that was a huge mistake. This thing gets alot of hate because people love the original so much for obvious reasons. I feel like if this was released under a different name, it would be one of the most praised releases of the last couple years.

Final verdict. I love this fragrance. I will wear this fragrance often. It was a good mistake to have made but now I need to order the classic because I need both.

Probably one of the most controversial fragrances of the year, I was lucky enough to get a full 100ml bottle for £30, and WOW. This fragrance really does stand on its own two feet, highly versatile, woody, fresh. The original championed the metrosexuality of the early 2010s, this new take on the fragrance almost brings things back to the masculine roots of men's fragrances, whilst also being extremely modern.

This has gotten a lot of hate for not being so "groundbreaking", but I personally have to admit, it's one of the best fragrances I've picked up this year. No, it's not as complex, or rich as my Dior Homme Parfum, or even Dior Homme Intense, but it doesn't have to be, in fact, it's a great thing it's not in my opinion.

My girlfriend absolutely adores it as well, and so has a number of females that I've been with. The only negative has to be the performance, I get a few hours from it before it becomes a skin scent. Overall I am very pleased to have this in my collection, don't be swayed to believe that this fragrance sucks because it does not have Iris, or because a silly Youtube reviewer told you so, smell it first before making judgements, you may be pleasantly surprised!

I don't follow batches or versions so not sure where this falls but I purchased this shortly after release (~2-3 weeks). It's the top end version from Coco with the Dior box and all the fixings. Never worn. Bought this for the purpose of display on shelf. It's been sitting in a see-through sneaker case. Still has new shoe smell. Icy sole has slight oxidation which is good since sneakers have been released for awhile. Includes Dior special box, all dust bags, metal jordan and air dior tags, extra Dior cap laces, and Dior print insoles.

Purchased from Peltiano. I paid a lot for this, I know there was a cheaper version floating around from other sellers. This one is 100% silk outer and inner lining. Never worn, I took it to my local tux/suit shop to get it steamed out as it came very wrinkled. Pains me to let this go but I live in an area where it rains way too often and never got around to wearing it. I know a lot of people missed out on this one so hopefully finds a good home. Chest is 48" or 24" across pit to pit. 24.25" length. Sleeve is 30" from collar, no shoulder point on this design. Waist is 34" at the very bottom. It's a cropped design.

Well, at first their was disappointed compounded by the internet hate, but my god I always liked the scent and it has grown on me. Wear it a lot at work now and it is not even close, it's the compliment monster of compliment monsters, if you want someone to ask what you are wearing or to tell you you smell nice wear this.

So I tested the three cause the shops recently opened in my country and the moment I sprayed all three all I could get was incense form givenchy and was the strongest projecting followed by Le male le parfum then DHI 2020, however the smell of DHI is most amazing of the three cocoa and iris while le male was too sweet with cardamom.

But here is the interesting part, with 4.5 hrs all started getting closer to the skin with DHI being the one closest which was rather disappointing. But then here is the interesting part I could still smell it on my wrist (nose to the wrist) even after 24 hrs but rest two were long gone.

So not the projection but in terms of longevity it is still a beast

This is not a spot to rag on this fragrance for not being the original Iris one. I love that one too, and I’m yet to smell this one.

That being said, for those who have tried it, how would you describe it?

Does it have the same kind of appeal and versatility as something like BDC or YSL Y or Sauvage?

Do you think it would be a hit if not for the hate because of the name?

I love fragrances but I have to admit that I get lost in the batch discussions and re formulation talks a little too much. The older the bottle the better is the way I typically looked at it. Which brings me to this discussion. I recently tried the new Dior homme and thought to myself they ruined a masterpiece. Its opening was so pungent and strong. I honestly didn’t know what I was smelling, notes wise. I absolutely hated it. This is actually my 3rd time trying it but the first two times I sprayed it on a test strip and tossed it after 15 minutes. This time I sprayed on my skin and we fast forward 2-3 hours later and I can’t stop sniffing my hand. It’s amazing. It’s musky and it’s beautifully musky. It’s right down my alley of what I like. This will be a future purchase. It doesn’t replace the old Dior homme but it will serve its own purpose. Have you given it a try? What’s your opinion.
