Using the Diathesis-Stress Model to explain Islamic terrorism.

I had this thought while watching Sam argue that the terrorism we are seeing today is due to religion not geopolitics. I found I didn't agree with either camp fully so I figured using the Diathesis-Stress model was a good analogy.

For those unaware, the Diathesis-Stress model is a psych theory that tries to explain why only certain people in similar stressful situations end up developing a mental disorder. Basically, if two people go through the same stressful situation and only one develops a mental disorder, it was probably due to a predisposition to that disorder. The deal is that you need both a predisposition and a stress inducing life event.

So my idea here is that Islam is the predisposition, and that the stressors of war and displacement have caused the terrorism (mental disorder). In this way religion is still a significant factor but contrary to what Sam seems to think, it's only the powder keg waiting to be lit.

Thoughts?

The Diathesis-Stress Model

The diathesis-stress model assumes that mental illnesses occur due to stressful conditions in the environment interacting with the biological and psychological characteristics of the individual. The model assumes that mental disorders can require a predisposition towards the disease, and it provides a general explanation for why individuals with a predisposition for a disorder, but who live in a healthy environment, may not develop the disorder, and why people who live in a stressful environment without a predisposition may not develop certain disorders.

The term β€œdiathesis” is a medical term which refers to a predisposition towards a given state or disorder.

It integrates biological and psychosocial factors to predict the likelihood of a disorder. This diathesis-stress model suggests that people with an underlying predisposition for a disorder (i.e., a diathesis) are more likely than others to develop a disorder when faced with adverse environmental or psychological events (i.e., stress), such as childhood maltreatment, negative life events, trauma, and so on. A diathesis is not always a biological vulnerability to an illness; some diatheses may be psychological (e.g., a tendency to think about life events in a pessimistic, self-defeating way). Thekeyassumptionofthediathesis-stressmodelisthatbothfactors,diathesisandstress,arenecessaryin thedevelopmentofadisorder.Differentmodelsexploretherelationshipbetweenthetwofactors:thelevel of stress needed to produce the disorder is inversely proportional to the level of diathesis.

Diathesis is the synonym of vulnerability. Vulnerability will allow or will not give a time in the development process of psychopathology when stress has been encountered. It is true that diathesis is considered natural among individuals and it is actually conceptualized on its stable and unchangeable condition. There are times that it is considered as latent or dormant because it is really hard to determine except when it is aggravated by stressors. Some of its examples are abnormalities in several variations or genes and genetic factors that usually cooperate in boosting vulnerability. Some diatheses are the loss of parent that occurred in the early stage of life and it can also be a conceptualized situational factor. Its examples are experiencing parent depression and low socio-economic status.

It is possible that stress can be a conceptualize event. When a certain person is vulnerable, it is possible that he or she will get depress

Largest study ever from University of Bath: 56% of young adults worldwide aged 16-25 think humanity is doomed, with over 45% who said it negatively affects their daily life, and 39% hesitant to have children because of it

A new, comprehensive global survey illustrates the depth of anxiety many young people are feeling about climate change.

The survey was led across 10 countries by researchers from the University of Bath in collaboration with five universities (University of Helsinki, The College of Wooster, NYU Langone Health, University of East Anglia, and Stanford University). It's funded by the campaign and research group Avaaz, and is set to be published in The Lancet medical journal (currently a preprint).

According to the researchers, this is the "largest and most international survey of climate anxiety in young people to date."

A total of 15,543 people began the survey, 10,000 (68%) completed it. There was an even split in terms of gender (51% male, 49% female) and age group (49% aged 16-20; 51% aged 21-25 years). 1,000 young adults were surveyed in ten representative countries each: the UK, Finland, France, USA, Australia, Portugal, Brazil, India, Philippines, and Nigeria.

Their findings include the following aggregate opinions about climate change among young adults (from Figure 1, Table 2 & Table 3 of the literature):

 • 59% were very or extremely worried, 84% at least moderately worried about climate change
 • >50% felt sad, anxious, angry, powerless, and guilty
 • >45% said their feelings about climate change negatively affected their daily life and functioning

Along with specific thoughts about climate change:

 • 83% - people have failed to care for the planet
 • 75% - the future is frightening
 • 56% - humanity is doomed
 • 55% - less opportunity than parents
 • 55% - most valued will be destroyed
 • 52% - family security will be threatened
 • 39% - hesitant to have children

And specific thoughts about their government's response to climate change:

 • 65% - failing young people
 • 64% - lying about impact of actions taken
 • 60% - dismissing people's distress
 • 58% - betraying me/future generations
 • 36% - acting in line with climate science
 • 33% - protecting me, planet & future gens
 • 31% - can be trusted
 • 31% - doing enough to avoid catastrophe
 • 30% - taking concerns seriously enough

Conclusions by the researchers:

>"A large proportion of children and young people around the world report significant emotional distress and a wide range of painful, complex emotions (sad, afraid, angry, powerless, helpless, guilty, ashamed, despair, hurt, grief, depressed). Similarly, large numbers report experiencing some functional impact,

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
