Unusual AMA: Unity Developer and avid Valheim Modder. Have questions about mechanics? Want to know why a certain thing works (or doesn't) a certain way? I'm managing anxiety by diving into the code and answering questions!

Just had an offer we placed for a house accepted today, and today has been INSANE. My stress and anxiety is through the roof and I thought answering questions about the Valheim code would be an engaging distraction.

Me: Unity Developer who started playing Valheim months ago and saw some Quality Of Life improvements that could be made, then ranted about some inefficient code that was slowing the game down, and I've been working on stuff for a while now. Have some mods up on NexusMods (Search UnbridledGames on there) but I haven't updated them in a long time because I've been working on a mod manager that would handle easy installs, upgrades, and version management, something the Nexus Mods manager software didn't do (much to my chagrin, as I uploaded some updates, and people's mods started breaking left and right. I assumed their manager would handle the updates. Nope!). Since then I've fallen down the rabbit hole making mods I've not found the time to release. Hoping maybe this post kicks me in the butt enough to get the interest there to release the rest of them.

I've been deep diving the code for months now, and have a personal hatred of the spread of misinformation. When I see people posting rumor or guesses that I know is not true, I try and chime in, but, that's really time consuming, especially answering the same thing 20 times.

So if you have any questions about the mechanics of the game, how a certain thing works, why something works a certain way (or doesn't), the best way to achieve X, or anything related to the internals of the game, I'll do my best to give the most honest and complete answer I can. Any answers I'll give I'll tag as spoilers, because I'm sure a lot of people might not want to know the answers to some of the questions that may be asked here.

No, I do not work with or for Iron Gate, and am purely doing this out of my dislike for misinformation, and my crushing anxiety over this home purchase and all the nightmares that go along with that and me needing something to focus my energy on. Digging into the code to provide an answer to an obscure question is the perfect way to distract my brain.

I see a lot of posts about it's range, and how it's small, and/or how it's smaller than a campfire etc. ALL comfort items have the same range. If Paradox ever comes back to development on Imperator, one thing I'd love to see is instituting a cultural hybridization mechanic (a version of which is now being added to CK3).

Reading the dev diary for CK3 today, in which they introduce their cultural divergence and hybridization mechanics, and I really would love to see something like that in Imperator.

The process of integration and assimilation is just too easy and frankly ahistorical. You deal with a very brief process of lowered stability during integration, but there's very little really hard choices the sorts of which we saw in history during attempts of integration. And with assimilation, you have provincial loyalty issues, and it takes a long time, but the process is just so much more homogenizing than it is in history.

Hybridization though seems like something that could make the process more realistic. For instance, perhaps cultures from other culture groups assimilate to a hybridization, and one has to integrate that hybridization for those pops to be accepted. Or perhaps integration is a longer process if one tries to avoid hybridization.

Of course, perhaps Paradox never comes back to provide meaningful development of Imperator...in which case I hope modders pick up the slack on this and other issues (tribal and trade re-work for instance).

Since video games are an interactive medium, what mechanics can developers use in the survival horror genre that taunt the player or increase the tension? A good example of this is Eternal Darkness.

Many horror games try to increase the tension with silence or music or jump scares or darkness or whatever. Many include actual survival elements like keeping in touch with your hunger, thirst, sleep, sanity and so on.

The Eternal Darkness is actually considered as one of the most effective when it comes to using its mechanics that quite literally taunt and scare the player indirectly.

There is the sanity meter where it makes the character see hallucinations but they also break the fourth wall so the fear is direct to the player like making them believe that the game crashed or making them believe that their sound was decreasing by mistake.

Given that video games are ample with opportunities, I am assuming that there are many ways that developers can actually provoke fear or tension to the player quite effectively.

What habits/coping mechanisms have you developed in your narcissistic relationship?

I was reading through my Notes app the other day (which is where I keep my diary) and it got me thinking about all the ways I've changed in this relationship. It would be really cool to read about everyone else's experiences, if you're willing to share. <3

  • I started day drinking on the days we were together. He'd always complain about me being quiet (I'm an introvert) and tell me how weird it made him feel, so I shamelessly drank to make myself more fun and interesting for him.
  • I take long showers at least twice a day to have some time for myself. I look for any excuse to go to the grocery store or pharmacy or the gas station alone and I wake up several hours earlier than him just to enjoy the peace and quiet.
  • I've become secretive and I'm terrified of letting him use my phone just in case he sees that I've been looking up things about abusive relationships on Google or goes through my notes. I turn off my Facebook notifications when I'm with him just so I don't have to explain every message I get.
  • I write down everything that happens, so I won't doubt my memory later (even though I still do).
  • I started thanking people whenever they show me basic respect. On a similar note, I'm always worried about crossing other people's boundaries and compulsively apologize for the tiniest things just in case someone takes something the wrong way.
  • I developed a mild shopping addiction. I'm in an okay financial situation, but I use the stress/sadness to justify ordering pretty things online way too often. It gives me something to look forward to and helps me stay motivated (?)
  • I have another diary/self-care journal where I keep all sorts of lists: things to look forward to, things I can do to make myself feel better when I'm feeling down, reminders, movies I've seen or want to see, nice written notes, wishlists. I decorate it with lots of stickers and washi tape and take it with me everywhere I go. It feels like my tiny private world and helps a lot when I'm feeling lonely.

I'm going to be 28 soon and I just today realized that I am verbally defense in the sense that I have to justify EVERYTHING I do by explaining how much thought went into my decisions.

Guide to all the different Anti-Grind Mechanics that JRPG developers have made over the years.

After reading through the grinding discussion thread made by u/WicketRank, the topic was so interesting that I decided to make this quick and small guide through all the Anti-Grinding mechanics that JRPG developers made specifically to stop players from grinding and over-leveling your party throughout the years, which in turn ruins all the challenge the game has to offer.

Some Important Notes:

  • This isn't made to say that grinding is good or bad, it's up to everyone to play the game however they like. As long as you're having fun, that's all that matters.

  • While these mechanics are made to stop grinding, they aren't perfect, in fact most of them can be easily exploited or even ignored depending on how well the player knows how the game works.

  • I personally don't grind, in fact at best I just fight whatever battles I encounter on my way to the next boss fight, and almost every time I would be more than well prepared to beat it.


~ Anti-Grinding Mechanics in JRPGs ~


The Classic [Enemies Scale with your Level] Mechanic:

This mechanic often pulls double duty, by first making sure that the battles are always challenging on different levels of gameplay. And secondly by making sure that the more you grind the harder you'll be making the game for yourself, thus eliminating the main purpose for grinding to start with. Some games this mechanic is found in:

  • Final Fantasy 8 (Enemies gain higher stats, new skills, higher damage)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics (Enemies will scale to your level, get better gears, better and more skills).
  • The SaGa series (Depends on the game, but generally you get to fight newer and more powerful monsters, or the same monster will get more deadlier skills and higher stats)

This mechanic is usually hated exactly for the reason that it doesn't let players get an overwhelming advantage by grinding over and over. In worst case scenarios where the player is unaware of this mechanic's existence, they'll end up grinding to a point where every random battle is a fight to the death, and way harder than actual story battles or even boss battles.

How to quickly develop good mechanics?

Hi, 1k beginner here. My question what can one do to improve one's mechanics quickly like last hitting, spell casting, atk moving, blink initiations etc etc.

I have a fairly decent understanding of the game (coz I watch a absurd amount of guides) but when it comes to game it feels like I just can't do what I have in my mind especially during team fights as everything seems so chaotic.

Bowser's Fury feels like one of those games where Nintendo is experimenting to see if it works, so that they can develop a new game with the same mechanics.

I've been playing the game and I noticed that this expansions feels like an upgrade to both Mario Sunshine and Odyssey (with 3D World controls) with new mechanics (Inventory System for power-ups) and inter-connected worlds.

I would go far as to say that this is the first glance at a future "Mario Breath of the Wild" type game. What do you guys think?

Developing a game mechanic in which you try and enlist other players to your religion.

I’m coming up with an idea for a game mechanic where players join a religious faction and try to convert other players.

I haven’t fully fleshed it out, so I wanted to see what others thought and get some input.

Initially I wanted a good vs evil thing, where at the start you enter the game and eventually gravitate to one side or the other - then your task is to fight for the souls of newer players, and to convert others.

The religions would be structured like a pyramid scheme with the number one player from each faction essentially being a god who ruled over their followers. Higher up players would benefit from dominion over lower level players.

At first, I liked the good vs evil system - but the more I look at it, the more I like the idea of players creating their own religions, so you wind up with a variety of different cults in varying shapes and sizes. Some of the leader gods would be massively powerful, others less so. Perhaps some smaller religions could still serve others.

What do you think? How would you design a game around this? Any tweaks or suggestions?
