I've come to the conclusion that his personality boils down to a McNulty-Rawls hybrid... he is generally a stubborn anti-authoritarian who fundamentally rails against the system (McNulty) but then also has a brutally acerbic side to him that seeks to crush anyone who he takes a disliking to. It's quite entertaining... he certainly doesn't pull any punches.

Edit: on my recent rewatch of The Wire (after following him on Twitter for a while) I noticed how he's seeing everything in a very pessimistic light, and was thinking maybe it clouds his judgment on things? Maybe things are not as bad as he portrayed them? He seems to love picking fight every time he can no matter the reason. Still love him, just made me think
