I’m torn on Curse of the Puppet Master. It’s directed by David DeCoteau (the man who loves to have men shirtless or half naked) and I like him. But I don’t like the fact that most of the scenes with the puppets are recycled from previous movies. I liked the fact we have at least a small glimpse of Leech Woman. But no Torch or Decapitron. This is the last movie, I believe, before we start going down hill with the films being mostly clips shows.
Released: 1998
Runtime: 78 mins
Director: David DeCoteau
Writer: Neal Marshall Stevens, David Schmoeller
Actors: George Peck, Emily Harrison, Josh Green
PLOT
A scientist attempts to master the art of transferring people’s souls into puppets. Robert, a strong yet simple man, starts working for the new puppet master in carving new puppets. He falls for the scientist’s daughter.
MY THOUGHTS
We get about six kills, only 4 of the people deserving it. We get a bit of blood with the slashing and drilling but overall kind of lacking in the blood and gore. And poor Robert’s body just disappears and his soul is in the terrible Tank puppet.
Even the acting was less than great. But then again, I only liked Emily Harrison as Jane and Josh Green as Robert Winsley. I didn’t care for George Peck as the new Puppet Master. He’s trying to make a race of hybrid puppets (half puppet half human). He doesn’t even seem to care that his previous assistant failed as an experiment. He just burns the body and buries it in the woods. Even the Puppets don’t like this. We even have the prerequisite group of asshole bullies and two corrupt cops. No innocent people to round out the cast (other than the original assistant, Robert, and Jane).
Curse of the Puppet Master is not a continuation of the previous films. They tried to turn the franchise into a different direction than it had been before, but I just don’t think it works. I felt bad for Robert in the end and feel like they did him real dirty. There’s no explanation as to how this guy gets the puppets, and why the puppets were okay with what he was doing.
I’m not a fan of this so I won’t recommend it unless you are a completionist. Or just a fan of the whole season. I know the upcoming movies are going to be even worse.

The idea of two separate franchises, Puppet Master and Demonic Toys, meeting up and battling each other sounds like a good idea. It should be good. But, they decided to release Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys on the SyFy channel on November 18, 2004. Having it released on the SyFy channel should be the first red flag. The second should be that Corey Feldman is the lead star in it. That says it all.
Released: Nov 18, 2004
Runtime: 88 mins
Director: Ted Nicolaou
Writer: C. Courtney Joyner, David Schmoeller, Charles Band
Actors: Corey Feldman, Vanessa Angel, Danielle Keaton
PLOT
You see this bruise? This is reality! Baby Oopsy kicked my butt!–Robert
A group of toymakers seek to use Andre Toulon’s formula, now in the hands of Toulon’s great-nephew Robert, to give life to a line of killer toys that they plan to unleash on Christmas Eve.
MY THOUGHTS
Not a lot of kills shown on screen (thanks SyFy), and only a little bit of blood. Which sucks because the Iron Maiden like device could have been so good if there was more blood and gore. But that’s just me. The best kill is the one where Julian loses his eyes because of Jack Attack. It’s been awhile since we had some good (cringe) eye bursting.
The acting. Yeah, there was acting. It was the typical acting for a SyFy channel movie. Vanessa Angel as Erika Sharpe, the owner of a toy company who has a deal with the demon Bael. It’s always nice seeing her. Then there is Corey Feldman. The only thing scary about this movie is his acting. In all seriousness, he plays Robert Toulon, the great grand-nephew of Andre Toulon. His acting is over the top as usual. He plays a father and basically the new puppet master.
The plot basically is about Robert and his daughter trying to perfect the formula to reanimate the puppets. On the other side Erika Sharpe wants to kidnap Robert for his blood, and to sacrifice his daughter to the demon Bael. Helping her are Baby Oopsy Daisy, Jack Attack, and Grizzly Teddy from Demonic Toys. Helping Robert is Blade, Jester, Six Shooter, and Pinhead. Unfortunately no Leech Woman or Tunneler.
Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys is not a serious movie, so if you go into it just to have fun there will be something there for you. Don’t expect a continuation of the Puppet Master series because this movie is not considered canon.

Retro Puppet Master is a prequel to 3. It tells us about a young Toulon who becomes the next Puppet Master and meets the love of his life Ilsa. For the seventh installment in this franchise I found it all right. Not the best and we still are not even to the horrible ones yet.
Released: 1999
Runtime: 80 mins
Director: David DeCoteau
Writer: Charles Band, Neal Marshall Stevens, David Schmoeller
Actors: Greg Sestero, Brigitta Dau, Stephen Blackehart
PLOT
An Ancient Egyptian sorcerer discovered the art of transferring the souls of the dead into inanimate objects, and is hunted by three mummies raised by Sutekh. He transfers his power to a young Andre Toulon to become the new Puppet Master.
MY THOUGHTS
For a movie with about 15 kills (including the mummies) there’s no blood. And no gore. A lot of Darth Vader’s mind control kills rather than conventional weapons. And I don’t understand how the puppets couldn’t kill the three mummies, but the chandelier that Six Shooter drops on them kills them? I shouldn’t think too deeply into this movie.
Greg Sestero as a young Toulon kind of confuses me. It feels like he’s trying to play a vampire rather than the puppet master. I’m not totally convinced he’s a good Toulon. I did like Brigitta Dau’s performance as Ilsa. Trying to break free from her father’s control, and being intrigued by a young, handsome puppeteer. Oh, and the mummies (?). The acting was bad. Just terrible. I know, they are cultist and revived, but still. It was bad.
At least we got to see Guy Rolfe as the older Toulon bookending the movie. We also see my favorite puppets as well. Now, I did like the new (old) puppets introduced in this movie. We get Cyclops, Blade, Dr, Death, Drill Sergeant, Pinhead, and Six-Shooter, all in wooden form. But we still can see wires several times throughout the movie. (I know, I know, that’s nitpicking. But come on, this is the seventh movie. You should have been able to figure out a way to fix this. LOL)
As I said earlier, it’s not the best by a long shot. But I know the movies that are coming later are much worse. It’s okay for a one time watch, but I probably won’t be watching it again.
I remember finally being able to rent Puppet Master when I was a kid. I had to wait on the waiting list for what seemed to be forever. Once I got home I watched it immediately. And then watched it again. The next time I was able to rent movies I grabbed all the Full Moon movies I could find. I was hooked. To the point that I saved all my babysitting money in order to pay for the club membership.
Released: 1989
Runtime: 90 mins
Director: David Schmoeller
Writer: Charles Band, Kenneth J. Hall, David Schmoeller
Actors: Paul Le Mat, William Hickey, Irene Miracle
PLOT
Four former colleagues, who each have psychic abilities, reunite at Bodega Bay Hotel where another colleague is dead after killing himself. What did he find and why did he kill himself?
MY THOUGHTS
We have 6 kills in this movie (with an additional 2 being told to us but we don’t see it). The main bad guy, Neill (Jimmie F. Skaggs), doesn’t even do the kills. He has the dolls do it for him. We do get a throat slit and a couple of suicides by gun to the head. I find the couple’s death and Neill’s final death the most interesting. Poor Carissa gets the drill to the head by Tunneler. And Frank gets the leeches by the Leech Woman. When Neill does get it we don’t see red blood, the director had to change the blood to a green liquid to keep from getting an X rating.
I am not a cynic, Frank! I like to think of myself as a nasty bitch.–Dana
The acting is, well, it’s a Charles Band movie. It can be hit or miss. But I didn’t mind the acting in this movie. I have to say I liked Irene Miracle as the White Witch Dana. Jimmie F. Skaggs plays the vile and sleazy Neill really well. Just looking at him you know he’s the antagonist. But the dolls are the best for me. They don’t get a lot of air time but when they do, it’s great. My favorite has to be Blade, with the prerequisite knife as one hand and a hook in the other. But he’s also a little voyeur watching Frank and Carissa having sex. We do get Pinhead, with a little head but a muscular body and Tunneler with a drill on his head. Leech Woman regurgitates leeches from her mouth. And finally Jester is a Jester that has a spinning head. Not really a killer though.
I’m the master, and you’re the puppet!–Neil
Considering Full Moon Features has low budget movies, the practical effects and animatronics are pretty good for the time.
If you like watching movies with killer puppets, or slasher type movies, definitely watch this. I

Puppet Master III is a nice prequel to the first two Puppet Master movies. We also go back to the good Andre Toulon. I guess we need to just forget the evil Toulon in Puppet Master II.
Released: May 1, 1992
Runtime: 82 mins
Director: David DeCoteau
Writer: Charles Band, C. Courtney Joyner, David Schmoeller
Actors: Guy Rolfe, Richard Lynch, Ian Abercrombie
PLOT
A puppeteer’s ability to bring inanimate objects to life attracts the attention of the Nazis during World War II.
MY THOUGHTS
Puppet Master III has roughly 13 kills, mostly Nazi’s. Most are just shootings, with a stabbing, and Tunneler gets to drill someone. But overall, not a lot of blood and gore. Which is a little disappointing but I still like the puppets.
As far as characters/actors, Guy Rolfe as Andre Toulon is perfect. I like William Hickey in the first Puppet Master movie, but I feel Guy Rolfe plays the role the best. To me, he is Andre Toulon. And for the evil bad guy, Richard Lynch as Major Kraus is also a great pick. Then again, Richard Lynch playing bad guys is pretty much the norm. Ian Abercrombie plays Dr. Hess, a scientist who works for the Nazi’s but in the end, respected Toulon too much for him to die at the hands of the Nazi’s. And to find out he is the “soul” of Blade, makes sense.
I like this movie as a prequel because we get to see more of Andre Toulon and his wonderful puppets. We get to hear more of, or at least a little bit, of some of his puppets backgrounds. We learn that the special magic comes more from the souls of the people he uses in the doll, versus just using any person. Here’s some of the information we found out during the movie:
Jester- He was Hans Seiderman, a book-keeper who liked to play jokes, until the Nazis shot him when they went too far.
Pinhead- Was Herman Strauss, a truck driver who snuck food into concentration camps, and was killed by the Nazis because of it.
Tunneler-Was Joseph Sebastian, a soldier who was forced to work in the Nazi’s salt mines until he died.
Blade- Was Dr. Hess after he was killed by a Nazi soldier, while helping Toulon. I think he was chosen because of the mutual respect that Dr. Hess and Toulon had.
Leech Woman- This was the saddest one. Major Kraus kills Elsa, and Toulon puts her soul into his only female puppet. At least she would be there with him in puppet form if not human form.
As you know, I like earl

It was written and directed by David Schmoeller, the director behind a bucket-full of cult horrors such as Tourist Trap and the original Puppet Master movie. However, despite these credits, Crawlspace never matched the strong critical or audience appraisals of other Empire Pictures films. Honestly it probably deserves that reputation. This curious tale of an evil landlord was both cursed by, yet prevails because of, its lead star; Klaus Kinski.
Video Essay with Kinski footage: https://youtu.be/oWPfKXhalQY
Crawlspace begins abruptly, launching straight into a generic horror scene of a lone woman wandering where she shouldn’t. Within minutes, she is dispatched by Kinksi’s disturbed character, Dr Karl Gunther. The remaining 77 minutes detail how this creepy landlord ensnares and preys upon his house full of pretty young tenants, from regularly scheduled spying from the vents to full-blown bloody murder. That is essentially all the plot there is, but Kinski’s villain is given a whole chunk of attributes and accessories to work with, to give the story some meat.
So, not only is he a deranged landlord who spends most of his day hanging out in air vents, he is also the son of an infamous Nazi surgeon. He himself then adopted a passion for euthanasia as a doctor in Buenos Aires, which developed into a twisted obsession with killing and death, which he constantly muses about in a diary. He also likes to tease and torture his victims. He makes a distinct tapping noise to alarm, unsettle and lure the tenants. He also owns a shit-load of rats to act as both an excuse for the tapping noises while also deploying them into their rooms through strange gadgetry. His knack for gadgets doesn’t end there, as he has also designed many death traps to catch any unwanted intruders, including most notably a spiky chair. Is that enough? No? You want more? Ok, he also keeps one unfortunate soul in a cage so he has somebody to talk to, but has cut their tongue out and keeps it in a jar with other select pickled body parts. After every kill he sets himself down in a room featuring the black-and-white chequered square tileset I always used on The Sims, and plays a game of Russian Roulette with himself. After every false fire, he declares “So Be It”, like some nifty Shakespearian catchphrase. Most nota

Puppet Master II is as good, if not better than the original Puppet Master movie. Yes, strong words but I like both of these movies. And come on…it’s got Charlie Spradling in it! Gotta love it!
Released: Feb 7, 1991
Runtime: 88 mins
Director: David Allen
Writer: Charles Band, David Pabian, David Schmoeller
Actors: Elizabeth MacIellan, Collin Bernsen, Steve Welles
PLOT
More paranormal researchers show up to Bodega Bay Hotel to find out what happened there. This time the dolls are trying to get their brain fluid for Andre Toulon.
MY THOUGHTS
The kills were either bloody or burnt. There’s about 7 or 8 kills and unfortunately we don’t see most deaths on screen, but we do get to see the aftermath. We get our first, and I believe only, child death in the series. Though the little runt kind of deserved the frying. He was a psychopath in the making. It does seem odd though that Andre Toulon is the bad guy in this movie. In all of the other movies I believe he is a good guy.
The acting was pretty good for Full Moon. But I have to say, it’s the first Full Moon Entertainment movie I saw the great Charlie Spradling in. She’s one of my favorite Full Moon Ladies. The puppets get more airtime in this movie. It’s unfortunate that Leech Woman is destroyed in a wood stove. I read that the studio executives didn’t like that puppet and didn’t want her in future movies. Luckily enough, co-producer David DeCoteau said that Leech Woman was his favorite puppets so she makes a comeback in later movies.
I do like the soundtrack for Puppet Master 1 and 2. Richard Band, Charles Band’s brother, made the music for both movies (well, he does most of the music for his brothers’ movies). Oh, and we get equal opportunity for nudity in this one. Granted we get Wanda’s (Charlie Spradling) breasts and we get Michael’s (Collin Bernsen) bare butt. I liked how they explained what happened to Alex Whitaker and Megan Gallagher between the movies. I like it when we find out what happens to the survivors after the movie.
