Hello, I think this book may be by David Lodge but unsure if this is one book or two. Theme 1- The male character has an affair with Sandy the office cleaner, she earns enough to pay for a good education for her child. Theme 2- the male character wins the lottery and buys several neighbouring mansions for his friends but the friends aren't very happy living like that. Thank you for your time.
