It's the 22nd day of 2022, so it's a good time to look at the players who have worn #22!
Ten Hall of Famers -- and couple will-be Hall of Famers, a couple woulda-been Hall of Famers if not for steroids, and a couple guys on the bubble -- have worn #22 in their careers.
But several of them wore the double deuces only briefly either at the very beginning of their careers, and are better associated with other numbers. So I decided to put together a team not of the best players to wear #22, which would include guys like Rickey Henderson and Mike Schmidt who each only wore it for a handful of games, and instead highlight only those players who were at their best while wearing #22.
Unfortunately, there is no source I can find on Negro League numbers, so this is strictly National League and American League. But an honorable mention to Hall of Famer Buck O'Neil, who wore #22 with the Kansas City Monarchs. In 2006, the minor league Kansas City T-Bones retired #22 in his honor. During that year's Northern League All-Star Game, the 94-year-old O'Neil had an at-bat for each team (walking each time). O'Neil, a first baseman and manager, was posthumously elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in November. His story is wonderfully told in his autobiography, I Was Right On Time, and in Joe Posnanski's The Soul of Baseball.
So without further adieu, here's the Top 22 players to wear #22, as decided by Wins Above Replacement as calculated by Baseball Reference (bWAR) while wearing #22:
1 - SP Clayton Kershaw is well known for his #22, but did you know he wore #54 for his first game with the Dodgers on May 25, 2008? He switched to #22 prior to his second start on May 30, 2008. (The new number wasn't very lucky at first; after giving up two runs on five hits and a walk as #54, he was bombed for four runs on five hits and four walks as #22. I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
