Something interesting to think about as LSU offers Riley in his 5th year at OU. Seems like if it doesn't happen in the first 4 years, it's not going to happen at all. Maybe he should make the move to LSU. Yet obviously there are some outliers, we shall see if Kirby Smart is another one.
Dabo Swinney got one more year after going 6-7 in 2010. Since 2011 he has won 7 ACC Titles, 2 National Championships, and multiple Coach of the Year awards.
Impact of keeping him: Clemson went 10-4 in 2011 and would start their evolution from a solid program that counted a 9-win season as a good year to a national power on both the recruiting scene and the field.
Will Muschamp got one more year after going 4-8 in 2013. He didn't make it through the next season.
Impact of keeping him: UF went 7-5 with a trip to the Birmingham Bowl and the 2014 recruiting class was okay on its surface (#9 ranking, which at the time was actually the lowest ranked non-transition class we'd had since the rankings started) but the class was heavily biased towards defensive guys and we took some character risks that flamed out ... it looks like a pretty terrible class in hindsight. We ultimately ended up with McElwain.
At first glance the statement is ridiculous. Dabo Swinney is arguably the second-best coach in the game today. Heβs won multiple National Championships and his team was a perennial pick (and favorite) for the playoffs. Mario is a frustrating enigma that seems to get close, and then poop the bed. But the similarities are there. To be clear, the ceiling for Mario Cristobal is Dabo Swinney. The basement? Hopefully what weβre seeing now, which isnβt a bad place to be. But why am I making these comparisons? Because they are strikingly similar.
Dabo Swinney started as a position coach at Clemson. He was promoted from within the existing staff. He was extremely popular amongst his players and was a tireless recruiter. He took over from a fired Tommy Bowden. I imagine you all know this, but Marioβs story is similar. Position coach, players favorite (they lobbied to get him the job!), recruiting machine. Mario also took over a team in turmoil following the Helfrich end and Taggart year.
Daboβs first four years included three complete seasons and one partial season (taking over for a fired Tommy Bowden as an interim coach). In those four years he went 29-19. Marioβs first four years will soon include three full seasons and one partial season (the COVID year). Mario is currently 34-11 in that span (Iβm omitting the interim Las Vegas Bowl). But more specifically to these years, look at these breakdowns:
Dabo
9-5 (Music City Bowl win)
6-7 (Meineke Car Care Bowl Loss)
10-4 (Orange Bowl loss)
11-2 (Chick-fil-A Bowl Win)
Mario
9-4 (Redbox Bowl win)
12-2 (Rose Bowl win)
4-3* (Fiesta Bowl loss)
9-2 (TBD Bowl, Rose Bowl is a possibility)
I want to point out that if we are directly comparing these records and bowl performances, Mario has an advantage. He could be coaching in his third consecutive NY6 bowl if Oregon handles business and wins out. Obviously not guaranteed at all. But not a bad position to be in.
Recruiting is the unspoken difference maker in college football. Spunky and fun teams can taste the mountaintop, but you wonβt stay there unless you are intaking elite talent. We shot the moon with Chip, but that only got us there and then we flamed out. And as transcendent of a coach as he was, he hasnβt been able to duplicate it ever again. Should be build the man a statue? Hell yeah! But it was the deviation, not the standard. We arenβt Alabama. We arenβt Clemson. We arenβt even USC (yet!). But for the first time ever weβre recruiting like those other
... keep reading on reddit β‘I just saw this (LSU coaching rumors: Dabo Swinney mentioned as candidate by CFB insider), and ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. First, Dabo ain't coming to LSU. I don't even have to explain why this is one of the dumbest statements I have heard. One might as well say Nick Saban is going to "come home." It ain't gonna happen. At this point, Urban Meyer, Jimbo Fisher, Mark Stoops, Lane Kiffin, and everyone who is not Nick Saban is "speculated" to be the next head coach.
LSU fans ecosystem is now being made fun of left and right because we are now officially a bunch of baggers desperately bagging for a new head coach making wild speculations. Integrity completely out of the window and we are still losing.
Just stop. Just let Scott Woodward have his talks and see what he comes up with.

Certainly, the guy has a point. But what is the point in even saying this? Canβt imagine a better villain character for OSU fans right now.
