Here is a summary/highlight reel of Lala’s book that absolutely no one asked for. I have tried my hardest to remain unbiased and mostly use direct quotes from the book. The first half of the book randomly jumped between various times in her life, so that is why the summary is not in sequential order. Side note, please support your local public library. Without further ado.

At 23, Lala moved to LA (for the second time) with one suitcase and $2,000 in her bank account. She got a job as a fit model for $40 an hour. Her portion of the rent was $900, which she had no problem affording because she was a big-time saver. She had shoved all her money away in a savings account since she began working at 12.

This was also the start of her ho phase, which was triggered by the breakup with her on-again, off-again relationship with a snack-and-a-half linebacker named Carter Hoffman. He played college football in LA, and was on his way to entering the 2015 NFL draft.

Her bedroom had a ho door which greatly helped during her ho phase. The ho door opened directly into her bedroom from the outside. This came in handy when she’d bag one dude, then have him make a quick exit so the newer, hotter dude could come through.

During this time period she also worked 3 shifts at SUR before making a group of somebodies wait for a table, and quitting after the Bulgarian manager, Diana, yelled at her. (Fun fact—she was present when Jax and Stassi met for the first time, in Las Vegas, two years before the show was even picked up by Bravo.)

At 25, modeling jobs started requesting Instagram and twitter following counts during bookings. Lala only had 300 Instagram followers, and she did not have a twitter account. Worried that no one would book her she went to SUR for drinks. Lisa Vanderpump approached her and stated that they were looking for a hostess with the possibility of appearing on Vanderpump Rules. After being in LA for nearly two years, all she’d booked was a Buick commercial and a handful of indie films, so she decided that maybe a season of reality TV would boost her profile.

I was adopted by an American couple, but I was born in Mexico.

I never really felt a connection to either side though. We never celebrated nor participated any of my Mexican heritage nor did I feel welcomed into the American ideals. I grew up in a small conservative town in Kentucky and was basically an outcast because I was essentially a foreigner to them.

I was kind of a loner.

No friends.

Cordial relationship with my parents.

But I was content. I had a home, food, and comforts here and there. Yet, I had so many questions about my family history that I knew couldn't be answered, as my parents didn't really have much information to offer.

I was found abandoned on the footsteps of some church in Jalisco.

But there was that yearning to find my biological family or at least some semblance of my family history.

So, for my birthday, I asked for one of those kits. I can still remember our conversation.

"Sweetie, are you sure about this?" My mother asked.

"Yeah, we just don't you coming in with unrealistic expectations." My father interjected.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure," I remember replying. "No matter what though, you guys are my parents and my actual family. I don't have any expectations, honestly. If I think my biological family is not what I was looking for, I'll just move on. I need this. Please." I pleaded. God I was so dumb.

Eventually, my little spiel got into their heads and further encouragement from my therapist solidified my parents’ agreement.

I got the kit itself sometime during February. It was nothing special, the instructions just said to spit into the vial and ship it out and I would get my results in a couple of weeks.

I remember the wait for my results. I tried to hide my excitement but every night I would imagine this scenario where I would end up related to someone really cool and famous or whatever.

Every night I would check my email in the hopes that it would come in early.

Then one morning I awoke to see the message.

I quickly logged on the website to see my profile. There was a global map with the highlighted countries where you had possible ancestry. In my case, every country was highlighted. I had such a small ancestry from every possible location on the map. But there was a chunk with 20 percent that was left untraced.

Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.

My apologies this is so late, things got WILD last week when I was supposed to post between work, school, and vehicle issues. Also I'm really verbose so I have to split this up because I wrote more than 40k characters :)

Section One: Assets and Debt

Retirement Balance (and how you got there): $0. Yep, my financial life has been an absolute mess.

Savings account balance: $100 when I started this diary, up to $300 now.

Checking account balance: $3200

Credit card debt (and how you accumulated it): Just over $11k. From doing dumb stuff and being an idiot with money, mostly. I took out a personal loan to get out of credit card debt, and the amount I took out still left $5k over. I transferred that to a 0% APR card, but didn't pay it down before that period ended, and ended up adding to it when I was unemployed in 2019 and EDD didn't pay me for nearly 6 months.

Student loan debt (for what degree): $22k for a certificate program in Museum Studies at Tufts University. The tuition was not that high for the program, but the federal loans gave me the full amount possible, so I wanted to use that to live on instead of working while in the program. Wasn't worth it, let me tell ya! I haven't made a payment on this in a LONG time.

Section Two: Income

Income Progression: I've been working in my field for almost 15 years, my starting salary was somewhere in the 30s. I did a lot of contract work and freelanced, so my income was all over the place. I worked full-time at an animal health company for $42,500 (grossly underpaid), left there and got another job at $65k that was a hybrid marketing/design job and also freelanced that year and made about $19k (total $84k that year). When I moved to San Diego, I took a nearly $30k paycut; the job I got here paid $55k for the first three months, then bumped up to $58k. Two or three years later, my CMO fought tooth and nail to get me $60,600, which is what I was making when I was laid off. I contracted/freelanced again, but that year ended up only making about $57k. 2020 my salary tanked to around $25-30k, and now I'm at $72k.

Currently trying to change careers into user experience (UX) design from graphic design.

Main Job Monthly Take Home: $4,092. This is just taxes as I'm a temp employee and not yet eligible for health insurance. During my diary I did join the 401k plan though.
