CROS hearing aids

Hi, About 7 months ago I had a surgery on my left ear and something went wrong which has caused me to be deaf in my left ear. Anyway, I'm curious to know if a CROS hearing aids is worth getting it or not. I believe my insurance will cover (most of) it. So my question, has anyone ever used this, and would you recommend it?

Why are the doctors only talking about CROS Hearing Aid?

The kind where sound goes in one ear and transfers it to the good ear? Idk why these sutter health doctors keep saying I’ll most likely be recommended for a CROS aid. I had a regular hearing test and then scheduled my hearing aid consultation (closest one they can give me is in December!!) and this is the second doctor who said CROS is most likely the answer. I had an ENT earlier in the year saying that that may be my only option. I havent asked them why because these meetings are like super short and it’s not a hearing aid consultation.

Im not against CROS, if it’s the only good option I’ll go for it - but 50% of my problem is not knowing which direction sounds come from and that affects me just as much as not being able to fully comprehend conversation. I would prefer a cochlear… but would there be a reason cochlears won’t work for a SSD patient?

maybe I’ll just have to wait until December to find out lol

My CROS hearing aids still don't work like they should. Advice? Solutions?

I have one good ear and one dead ear. The CROS hearing aid system is supposed to be a good solution. I've been wearing them for almost a year and a half and I'm not happy with the results. I STILL CAN'T HEAR ANYONE ON MY BAD EAR SIDE!

Tomorrow I go back to the audiologist who says that she has some new adjustments she wants to try. This will be like the 4th time I've been back for adjustments.

Does anyone have any "you sound like me" stories they could share? Did you have trouble getting them to work? Was there an "AHA!" adjustment that was done to your hearing aids that finally made them work? If there was an adjustment I need to bring to the attention of the audiologist please let me know.

UPDATE! See my post below.

Need advice from those wearing CROS hearing aids

I am 100% deaf in my right ear (SSHL).

I hear very well through my left ear even though I have a slight deficiency in the higher frequencies simply due to my age.

I've been wearing a pair of Widex CROS hearing aids for about a year now but they are not helping me very much. Although I've remained patient and optimistic and I wear the hearing aids consistently, I still can't hear very much sound from my right side. I've been to my audiologist a couple of times and she has made adjustments that sound like an improvement while I'm in the office but once I get back into the real world my enthusiasm sinks because they are still not of help.

It's especially frustrating considered how much I had to pay for these things!

What I'm thinking is that the hearing aid volume on my good ear that processes the sound from my left side is set to be TOO LOUD but the volume sent from the hearing aid on my bad ear is TOO LOW (even though it is set at a volume level of about 90% of its ability). I think the sound signal from the bad ear is getting lost because of the high volume of the aid in the good ear. What I want to try is to get my audiologist to set the hearing on my good ear to ONLY boost the sound and frequencies of the signals coming from my bad ear. Perhaps completely disable the processing of sound from my left side so that the hearing aid in my good ear only sends the sound from my bad side.

This week I have another appointment coming up with my audiologist and would appreciate any advice from those who have experienced problems with their CROS hearing aids.

Cros hearing aid question

Hi All -

Been deaf in my right ear since I was a kid. I’ve gotten used to it over my 39 years but recently had a coworker get the Phonak Cros and it’s made me do some exploring.

When I look online all I tend to find is advertisements opposed to information. I have a hearing test scheduled for tomorrow at a hearing center so trying to get all the info I can first.

The last time I had a hearing test was over a decade ago and the only thing they could offer me was a Baha device, which I declined at the time. Though hearing from my right side is a constant battle, I also have a shaved head and wasn’t comfortable with it at the time. Fast forward to now and the same concern is hitting me. Are there any Cros hearing aids that are in-ear? Or do they all have the behind the ear receiver?

General cost of them in the United States?

I’m excited to potentially have an improvement to this lifelong issue. Thanks in advance.

Questions about the CROS hearing aid

I just wanted to start by saying I just find this subreddit and I'm actually so happy because I didn't realize there was a whole sub out there for people like me! When I first lost hearing in my left ear, I felt completely alone and scared. I didn't have the money or insurance I needed to see an ENT or even to take a hearing test so I had no idea how bad it was. After 6 months I was able to see a doctor who diagnosed me with SSD and told me I had no hearing at all in my left ear. Assessing my options, I couldn't afford any so I just have been trying to live my life as normally as possible. But anyway, on to the actual question!

So, my family has come together and for Christmas they will pay over 3 grand to get me this CROS hearing aid that my doctor recommended to me! It's a dream come true, and although my dad can be flaky, I really think he'll actually come through this time as the rest of my family is already in on it.

Although I know the hearing aid won't give me my complete hearing back, I am really hoping it'll make a big difference. Have any of you guys ever used this hearing aid, and if so, what is it like? Did it help?

Got my cros hearing aids today

Been deaf in my left ear since I was two years old so I’ve adapted to only having one ear. Don’t know what having two working ears is like. School was hard growing up, it was tough to hear in a noisy classroom and I got teased a lot for being β€œdeaf” so when I was offered a hearing aid, which was the size of a mountain to a 14 year old, I said no way, not gonna give people more to tease about. Was dead set on not getting or needing hearing aids since then.

Fast forward to today 15 years later and I have an office job with a lot of meetings where I really need to Focus and hear what people say, I thought fine, I’ll get those big chunky things.

Well I guess we live in the future now and my god they are tiny, like 2 cm with a tiny wire, Bluetooth for my phone, wireless charging etc. I’ve only had them for like 12 hours today but I’m so happy, I can hear everything, I don’t have to turn my head, I can turn up and down the microphone on my iPhone depending on how far away people sit. This is the single greatest purchase I’ve done in years and it only cost me 100 bucks. Really kicking myself for not getting them sooner.

Update on 24 days with cros hearing aids

First post: https://www.reddit.com/r/MonoHearing/comments/hdxtuw/got_my_cros_hearing_aids_today/

I promised I would update when I have had my cros hearing aids for a while. Since today was the last meeting with the audiologist and the last day of my "try out time" I thought I would make an update.

I am still very happy with the hearing aids. They have helped my daily life with social, work and activities. My daily "What?" and "*turns head to good ear and saying what"s have gone from constant to pretty much none. I barely notice them hanging on my ears since they are so light and the in ear bit is not noticable either.

I think that my memory may have improved slightly, as i now hear clearly what people are saying to me and it is much easier to remember. Before it was like, "what did he say last time we spoke? was it this or did he mean that, better ask again"...

Today at the audiologist we talked about any issues I had and she could see the statistics of what environment i have been in (did not know it saved that). I complained a little bit about loud rooms and echos and that the aids tend to make everything just louder. She hooked my hearing aids up with 5 programs:

  1. loud surrounding ( will focus the mic forward and reduce background noise)
  2. outside and sport ( wind noise reduction)
  3. walk with conversation (makes conversations clearer while reducing noice)
  4. Live music ( process the music to make it less flat)
  5. room echo reduction. (same as 1 but will not focus the mic forward)

I can switch between the programs via the app on my Iphone. (like seriously we live in the future, just imagine 20 years from now)

I really have noting to complain about, I love these things, sure they could be even smaller but I wanted the batteries to last a full day and not have to worry about bringing the charger with me. (the manual says 23 hours and that seems to be correct so far, even with podcasts etc)

Anyway.. these things have made my life so much better and to be honest I did have some concerns about what people would say about them. However I have had nothing but people being genuinely interested, asking how they work and going omg I can barely see them. So get them if you can.

Question - What to expect from a CROS Hearing Aid for someone who has been Mono all their life?

So as the title says, I have been suffering from SSD almost all my life, I lost my hearing on my right side when I was 2-3 years old so, I really don't remember how was life before I turned Mono.

Back to the present, I am 20 years old and I found this sub a couple of months, I have read most of the stories from all of you and I have seen that I can relate to the struggle that all of us share from having SSD and even encourage me to get a pair of CROS Hearing Aids that I just got from an appointment.

My questions are mostly oriented for those who happen to be in same situation as me because the thing is that a great percentage of the people here lost their hearing later in life (like SSNHL), in those types of cases, they probably can notice a difference when using a hearing aid but as for me who never had that luxury (at least remember), how could I notice if something it's different from what I'm used to?

These are my questions:

  • Did you notice a difference using the hearing aid?
  • How long it took you get used to?
  • Did it fix the problem of knowing where sounds are coming from?
  • Did it fix the problem of understanding people when they talk?
  • Does it gets annoying in loud environments?

Thanks for reading.

CROS Hearing aids? ADHEAR device?

Hi! I am a 21 year old female and I just recently became profoundly deaf on my left side due to an inner ear infection of some kind, not really sure. It’s been pretty tough getting used to it, and I struggle a lot with sound localization and understanding day to day conversations (especially now with masks). The Ent/ audiologists have offered a few things to help me, anywhere from hearing aids, to the possibility for a cochlear implant. But for right now I’m just taking it all in and weighing out my options. I was wondering if any of you guys use a CROS hearing aid system, and how do you like it. I feel like I’m leaning more towards that route, that or the ADHEAR device. I would love to hear from any of you who have had any experiences with either of the two aids. Any advice? Thank you :)

Modified amplified earmuffs as a DYI Single sided deafness CROS/BiCROS/BAHA hearing aid (hear left and right ambient sounds with one ear) with DIY how to video

I modified a pair of amplified earmuffs so that the deaf side driver was moved over to my hearing side so that both the left and right driver are on the hearing side. Here is the how to Youtube link I came across that inspired me to make this.

What I wanted was for sounds that originate on my deaf side to be heard from my hearing side while I am working. I was drawn to these amplified earmuffs because they amplify the sound of voices over background sounds (which they suppress) and I did not know if anyone had tried this and I found the video of someone who did. With these on I can hear the TV way clearer (super clear in fact) and I can hear everyone in my household clear as well - I am hearing sounds all around me - it does not help me sound locate of course but I am hearing EVERYTHING. I even walked the streets with these and I could hear the car traffic from my deaf side. I tried clapping my hands real loudly and it suppressed the slap sound but I could hear the TV and people talking clearly. I have had these on for a couple of hours and the battery still is going strong - it is USB charged.

You can also play music through these but the sound is not high fidelity but not bad (sounds like cheap airplane headphones in music mode). You hear the music and some ambient sounds. They are nice and comfortable, too. I bought these used because it was my first go at this and I did not want to destroy a new one. This costs under $90 new from Amazon.

I will explore other models in the coming weeks. If you have any questions about this build please feel free to ask me.

I followed the video instructions and here is a picture of my final product.

Excited! My hearing aids have been ordered! Need tips on the Widex Cros Fusion and Unique 440 Fusion

Hello Friends:

In February of this year I woke up with no hearing in my right ear. Long story short.... I was diagnosed later with SSHL.

My left ear: very good hearing ability, hearing aid ordered Widex Unique 440 Fusion

My right ear: profound heating loss, hearing aid ordered Widex Cros Fusion

I'm in the United States. My insurance won't cover any of the costs. (Total cost of the above combination for me is $3,006.00)

During my consultation with the audiologist I was able to try out the pair and I was absolutely astonished at the difference they made for me. To me they sounded fantastic. I was able to wear them in the office for about 90 minutes. Several different ambiances including moderate chatter coming from down the office hallway, Busy waiting room with a television on too loud, and outside off the office building on a moderately windy day with busy traffic going by. My brain seemed to adjust to the hearing aids right away as they automatically sensed what environment they were challenged with. I'm looking forward to getting them later this month.

Any opinions from anyone who has the about combination of hearing aids? Positives, negatives, input as to anything you learned as you became adjusted to them. Tips? Do's and don'ts?

Thank you.

CI verses CROS hearing aid

I'm new to this all and just starting my research. About four months ago I suddenly went completely deaf is one ear. I have severe tinnitus. I've been trying CROS hearing aids. My doctor has recommended CI for relief and better hearing. I was hoping for some input from this community. THE hearing aids are terrible in crowded places like church. Will I have the same issue with CI? I'm 51 years old and never have had surgery. So I'm scared. I really don't know what to do.

Will CROS hearing aids also help to eliminate dizziness?

I'm dealing with sudden deafness in my right ear. My left ear is perfectly fine. Now undergoing steroid shots directly into my right ear but I don't think I'm going to get any hearing back. Emotionally I've accepted that fact. It is what it is. Could be worse. (My mom said, "at least its not your drive thru ear!". I suppose she does have a point.)

The first few days after I lost my hearing I was VERY dizzy. Now it has been a few weeks and I'm feeling like I'm 75% less dizzy. (Is it because my brain is figuring everything out and working to it adapt to my new normal?)

Question. Do the CROS hearing aids help with eliminating dizziness? If not will the doctor's be able to control dizziness with prescription medication?

Hearing aids - CROS options

I’m HoH (single-sides deaf) due to damage to the auditory nerve. I have good hearing in my right ear.

CROS seems like a good option for me, but I’m having difficulty understanding my options re models. I’ve seen two audiologists. One is recommending Phonak B70 + CROS and the other is recommending Signia Pure 3Nx + CROS.

I don’t think there is more than one choice per brand for the CROS component (on my deaf side), so I’m led to believe by the second audiologist that there is no benefit to going higher-end with the second unit. Is this correct?

Any advice from someone who uses a CROS solution?

Issue with CROS Hearing Aid

I have suffered from single-sided deafness for nearly 40 years, and finally broke down and bought a hearing aid. While my insurance will cover the cost of the hearing aid, I have not met my deductible and would have to pay the full cost out-of-pocket ($5,000). As an alternative, I bought an affordable used Phonak 312 CROS and Phonak Audeo Yes on eBay. The receiving side (Audeo Yes) works great, but I don't think the mic on the CROS transmitter is working - when I run my finger across the mic, there is no "rustling" noise, and I can't hear my wife whispering in my bad ear.

The way they are set up, the button on the CROS unit lowers the volume, and the button on the Audeo unit raises the volume. The button on the Cros unit seems to work, as it does lower the volume and I can hear the tone for each decrement.

I've tried fresh batteries and cleaned the battery contacts, but it didn't help. Am I not doing something right? Any suggestions on what I might try to get this to work before I take it to a hearing aid center?

About Cros earing aid

Hello from Korea :)

I have been suffering from SSD all life. My left ear do not work and Doctors don't know why. I learned about cross hearing aids and related to them, I went to the hospital to demonstrate. However, I don't know how it is in real life because I used it for a while only when I was in the hospital. I looked for a cross hearing aid review, but there were not as many reviews as I wanted in Korea, so I looked for Reddit.

In my case, I can't hear only the left ear and the other ear is normal, so I can't receive subsidies. So I'm thinking about purchasing it because it costs a lot of money.

I would like to ask for a detailed review of how it is to use a cross hearing aid in real life.

AITA for telling my boyfriend that he doesn't have to give hearing aids to his daughter?

I have a 40-year-old boyfriend who has a 14-year-old daughter who he takes care of most of the time, but whose mother takes her to another city on weekends.

It happens that the girl will spend the month with her mother, and she left two days ago. This family celebrates the Three Kings Day (So the gifts are given that night and not at Christmas, I don't know how many people know what this day is), so her mother will give the girl gifts on January 7th.

The problem is that my boyfriend is short of money, and he has told me that he will not pay for our anniversary outing (January 5) so that he can afford his daughter's gifts, but that perhaps I could invite him this time.

I told him that I did not understand what he was planning to buy for his daughter so that he would become financially unbalanced by his daughter's gifts, and he said that she needed sheets of drawing paper, colored pencils, headphones and a new cell phone (Since, in a difficult moment, his daughter had to give him the cell phone during 2020 to accommodate job interviews by zoom and stuff. He will give her a better one now instead of giving it back, because he has recovered financially and his parents will buy the paper and the box of pencils). I told her to just give her the phone and forget about the headphones or ask his parents for them. He said that he would not ask for more money than he had already asked for, and that the headphones were an additional gift because the phone "I owed it to her for having had to take the other one from her." I said that she was his daughter, to just buy her something and we would go out anyway, because she shouldn't demand anything of him because he was already feeding her and putting a roof over her head.

He said I'm stupid for believing his daughter wasn't worth his effort, but I didn't mean that.

Edit: I don't speak English and Google translate wrote hearing aids instead of headphones.

Hiding hearing aids

When I order hearing aids, I always order black because I think "flesh tone" look terrible and never match (the same with matching hair). For kids, you can get bright colors, but they don't offer those to us adults. My audiologist said that a lot of her patients (most of them are older, so this may be age specific; I'm 32, so not her norm) feel the need to hide their hearing aids or at least make them less noticeable. I'd rather get whatever it is out of the way and not awkwardly wait for you to notice or say something. I have anxiety that gets worse when I think people are probably noticing something and just not saying anything.

Do you feel the need to hide yours? What age (or group) are you(if you feel comfortable sharing)?

Edit: What colors do you pick? If you had them as a child, did you go bright or muted?

This is a small little detail I noticed on the new Hawkeye skin, he has the hearing aid from the show instead of his default hearing aid.

Why does the deaf community hate hearing aids/cochlear implant’s?

I’m hard of hearing. With moderate to severe hearing loss and I love being able to hear. So I don’t get why the deaf community don’t like hearing aids. I guess it could just be my experiences and opinion

EDIT:fixed question to better reflect my question

CROS hearing aids - what should they sound like?

Deaf in my right ear and very good hearing in my left ear. I have the Widex CROS hearing aids. If I just listen to the audio being sent from my bad ear to my good ear I've discovered that it is only sending the highest frequencies of the sound spectrum. All treble, no mid-range or bass.

Is this normal?
