A list of puns related to "Cpu Design"
Hi,
A few weeks ago I asked if I could learn to design my own CPU to run on an FPGA.
I received some fantastic answers and I'm finding this group a fantastic resource, thankyou all.
In the original thread, several serious textbooks were suggested and they often had serious price tags.
Sadly, my city libraries are a complete washout on every single one. So now I have to very carefully focus what little money we have on what is, basically, books for a 'fun hobby'.
So, I have my Lattice ICE40 demo board. I want to draught my own simple computer from scratch. Please select a book from this list and briefly explain why it's the right book for me to choose.
Here are all the books via Amazon links:
Digital Design and Computer Architecture
Digital Design and Computer Architecture: ARM Edition
Introduction to Logic Circuits & Logic Design with Verilog
The Elements of Computing Systems: Building a Modern Computer from First Principles (The MIT Press)
Finally, this is a link to my original post:
Finally, anybody know why I've got a picture of food at the top? That's my dinner, why has it chosen that?? (Answer, I accidentally duplicated one of the books and the link was to the recipe for our dinner, Bacon & Fish O'Leekie)

Hello, I am buiding a pc for my friend who will use it moslty for 2D graphics design and I am unsure of which CPU and GPU to choose.
The options I have now are,
For CPU:
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 4.6GHz 6-Core Processor
or
Intelยฎ Coreโข i7-11700KF 5.0GHZ 8-Core Processor
For GPU:
RTX 2060 8GB
or
RTX 3080 10GB
Is the Intel CPU and the RTX 3080 worth the extra money? Thank you for your help
For a current project involving networking and stateful calculations, I'm currently wondering whether using Tokio tasks is a viable alternative compared to regular threads. The general architecture involves a websocket listening for connections and I'm currently estimating around 50-100 users total, more than cores available on the machine.
The amount of requests for each user can be assumed to be balanced and each user has an associated state (struct of around 50 bytes) as well as a globally accessible, constant set of parameters that is used for calculations together with the state. The order of calculations matters, so if a user is sending multiple requests in sequence (incl. timestamps), these have to be calculated in sequence as well. The calculations per request (CPU-bound) can be assumed to take substantially longer than the handling of the request (I/O-bound).
Due to the stateful nature of these calculations, I'd exclude parallelism libraries like `rayon`. From what I've read, Tokio requires all closures passed to the `Tokio::spawn` function to implement the `Send` trait, as they might be continued on another green thread after preemption. As such I'm questioning whether Tokio is suited to the approach of stateful computation, as moving the user-dependent state around the green threads would likely also induce additional delay compared to giving each user it's own real thread and handling all user-related requests within that thread.
I know that a benchmark would be the only way to be sure about this, but as this affects the general architecture of the application I'd like to get some input beforehand. Does anyone have experience implementing an application with similar workload using one of these approaches? Is the work-stealing Tokio scheduler "smart" in the way that it tries to prevent moving work around the green threads as much as possible? Input towards this, even if not answering these questions, is highly appreciated.
Edit: This listing is closed. Please see the updated one on my profile.
Hey all. Welcome to another blowout. I have lots for sale, so lets get right into it.
Local is 55330. Please comment before PM.
Please note- I am away from home M-F for work, so I am unable to ship until Saturday or Monday mornings. Thank you for your understanding.
Timestamps are here.
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X CPU- First up I have the headline item. I've been using this CPU in my home system for the last couple of months, but being that I'm gone M-F pretty much every week it only has had a handful of hours of uptime. Used for gaming first and streaming second. I am selling because I am upgrading to a 5950X instead to aid in getting as minimal of a performance hit when streaming as possible. Asking $570 shipped (priority, insured), $550 local cash.
Cryorig C7 Cu Low Profile CPU Cooler- I purchased this when I was planning on moving to the FormD T1, but found out that my motherboard wasn't compatible without seriously altering the mounting hardware for this cooler. Never used, and quite rare (for whatever that's worth). Brand new. Compatible with AMD or Intel. Asking $80 shipped, $70 local cash.
Fractal Design Celsius S24 CPU AIO- I was running this in the Louqe Ghost S1 for a small amount of time before I realized I wanted to move to a case that was a little more robust. Terrific performer with very little required in the way of cable management. Like new condition, includes all mounting hardware for AMD and Intel. Asking $90 shipped, $80 local cash.
Phanteks Glacier R160 RGB Low Profile Reservoir- I was running this with a DDC pump in a Sliger SM580 for a few months. Great as a standalone reservoir, or compatible with DDC pumps. Includes all original hardware and RGB strips. Great condition. Asking $60 shipped, $50 local cash. Edit: reservoir sold to u/Pasmoules
Limited Edition Death Stranding Dualshock 4 PS4 Controller- I got this in the Death Stranding console bundle when it launched a while back. Held onto it after I traded in my PS4 towards my PS5. The controller is brand new, and includes the Micro USB cable. Asking $110 shipped, or $100 local cash. Edit: sold.

ArmleoTV has made a couple of wonderful tutorial episodes(not yet completed) on CPU design from scratch. Here is their channel
I found out about it through a post here on the sub
I decided to create a playlist and update it with all the videos made until this date here
I would like to thank the creator of the content and the post maker for sharing this with us.
Lenovo Legion 7 seemed good, but I heard it has really bad thermals.
The Strix Scar 17 would've been perfect if it weren't for the overdone design.
As the title say i want to design a CPU, it should be moderatly complex (32 bit, pipelined etc.), architecture should be ARM or RISCV.
My questions are:
Is it possible to implement it in a relatively cheap FPGA? (I have a basys 3) or i need a more powerful one because i run out of hardware?
How hard it is for a single student/ a group of two?
When i finish the design and simulation, can i implement a little OS and view it on the screen? How?
Can i write a little program in Assembly or C?
For the 4) i need the compiler, should i download it in an ssd card right?
Thanks.

>What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Programs like adobe illustrator, photoshop, figma, etc. and playing games such as Overwatch, Minecraft, etc. in just 1080p.
>What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
So i already have the CPU, CPU cooler, and GPU that my boyfriend is giving me (Ryzen 7 1700x, Wraith prism, and MSI GTX 1060 6GB). So i'm not sure what my budget would be for the rest of the parts because i don't know much about the prices for other parts, but i just want something mid-range.
>When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Sometime in the near future maybe over 6 months to a year.
>What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)
PSU, SSD, HDD, MOBO, TOWER (Really like the design of the Corsair 4000D Airflow Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX PC Case - Black and would like to build around that BUT am open to other suggestions).
>Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
US, Texas, yes have access to a micro center.
>If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
MSI GTX 1060 6GB, Ryzen 7 1700x, Wraith prism cooler.
>Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No
>Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
WIFI.
>Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Like i mentioned above i really like the 4000D Airflow Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX PC Case - Black, but am open to suggestions that include a black case, mid-tower, and black colors.
>Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Already have this figured out.
>Extra info or particulars:
Title.
Preferably Id like to benchmark the new updated Citadel map on 128 bots on high, medium, off/ low graphics settings. If you guys could so kindly put details of ur spec models and ur in-game data including average fps, % use, and task manager % use, it would be most appreciated.
Did an ITX build, but switching to a mATX build for more expansion.
Case and fans are in excellent condition.
Motherboard and CPU cooler were sold on Craigslist, so I took them out.

PM me for any questions, thank you!
i find this one funny , he loves guitar , i think is the guy who created this caracter
and you saw a portion of my called Cpu Prison (the other portion is in the left with parole rooms family rooms , staff offices, export trash and delivery with copters (essentially) ) ,
i want to optimise a maximum the travel times of all unities but is a big job =)
i ve some little problems with paroles rooms by section ( if i dont mind is a bug coz my sections dont have the same planning time )
i think, i use 5/6 M $ for built it , i draw this one in 12/15 hours before open the prison to prisoners, i dont use the planification only with instinct =)
the canteen and kitchen rooms are optimised for 500 prisoners at once (in medium quality, medium quantity) , but it serve only 340( for each section 340 menus betwen 12h/14h and 20h/22h and 340 menus betwen 16h/18h and 00h/02h)
i soon go to 680 prisoner with no lags (only patrol no deployments for the gard, dont use the running track for more fasters the npc's bugs on them (like roll back) ) , for the cells , this a block of 20 cells (supreme cells 15/15 [4x3] i dont use the fonction (level of cells) ) and there are 17 blocks for the two section and the 2 sections ar low security and medium
for the elctrics i only use the going green dlc 's generators , u can sell the energy dont used is good for start but u need some $ to start (200k 300k for begin i think), but with the going green director u can have 120 150k $ a day with this strat before buy staff guards , u can use 500 peons for building fast ( for info i do for 1 generator of 5k of energy this is x6-solar wind mixed gen / x4 only wind gen, the winded is for the night for keep 2,4k energy ) i ve 12 gens like this (128 generators maxxed)
next objective 1000 prisoners i dont have the trophy =) , so i ll do some little sections of high security / max security / and preventive for the rats =) in circle around the bigblocks
for the security for now , 400 guards (100 for open and close gates with the door control electric) 250 constantly patrol no deployement, with deployment they will bug and cause the lags of game like when u have to many paroles rooms) 50 dogs guards patrolling around the cells, deliveries and the big section of wall around the prison
for now i put off gangs, event, meteo or insane for the grow peacefully but i want to put on after i finished the sections
i m open if u have any suggestion or want any in
... keep reading on reddit โกHello everyone,
I need to run a RISC-V softcore in my FPGA. I don't need to develop the core myself, which means I can use one with good support and that is well implemented (if someone knows a good one, tell me in the comments, please). Since I'm a little new to this area I started by using a simple core: https://github.com/tilk/riscv-simple-sv, however, I'm a little lost in the steps that I need to do. First, I need to put the core in my FPGA. Then, how can I execute code in the core? Do I need to put the machine code into the ROM? And how can I do that? What if I want to debug my C programs that are supposed to run on the core?
I'm sorry if I said something stupid but as I said I'm not very familiar with this area.
Thank you
