I'm currently watching the original L&O series (for the first time), and recently started watching S09. Great series! Soon after starting S09, I watched Exiled: A Law and Order movie (1998). This is a stand-alone TV film that chronologically takes place early in S09, and features detective Mike Logan. He is now "demoted" and working in Staten Island, after punching out a politician at the end of S05.
I had heard a lot of negative things about this. However, despite it's flaws - I'm glad I saw the movie. It wasn't nearly as good as a regular episode of the show, but IMHO was still worth checking out - at least once. And, it is part of the L&O series mythos & features many of the regular characters (Briscoe, Curtis, Van Buren, Profaci, etc.) My review:
The good:
-Compelling story involving Logan taking the Ferry to work one morning, and seeing a body being pulled out of the harbor. In typical Logan fashion, he bull-dogs his way into the investigation by claiming that the body is under his jurisdiction (which is a lie), so he can have justification to work on/solve the murder.
The investigation leads to the son of a well-known mafia don, and a cover-up involving the authorities.
>!I was surprised that Profaci was implicated in the cover-up. One of the most poignant scenes in the film was when he was explaining/justifying what happened (to Logan) and how he got pulled into helping cover up the crime - and asks Logan for help. The events in this film explain his subsequent absence on the regular series, where he had been a semi-regular up to this point.!<
>!I didn't see the end coming: As Logan & company go to arrest the son at the mafia don's large home, the don willingly turns his son over to the authorities. In retaliation, the son suddenly & unexpectedly kills his father - and then is arrested & taken away.!<
In addition to the regular L&O cast, this also featured Dabney Coleman, Ice-T, Dana Eskelson (as Logan's new partner), Costas Mandylor, etc.
The bad:
-Cheap production values. This was a made-for-TV movie, and it showed. The score was just OK, and the editing was poor. It would have been a lot better if this had been a regular, 2-hour special episode of the show with the iconic intro., music, excellent editing, etc.
So... how do we all feel about the possibility of SAW X taking place between SAW and SAW II?
Personally, I actually kind of like that idea as an OG fan who was able to experience (most) of the SAW films in the theater when they were released. I loved the original contiunity with the soap-opera style story-telling, shaky cinematography and coloring, and the cast of antagnoists (John, Amanda, Hoffman, etc). Apart from this, I also just miss having SAW movies. It is probably my favorite horror franchise and I loved spending my October's getting excited about the next installment.
BUT
I can see about a million ways this could go wrong. First, after seeing Jigsaw and Spiral, I am disappointed by the style of those films. It's too clean and sleak for a SAW film imo. This is super nitpicky, but for a SAW movie taking place between 1 and 2, there has to be consistency in the style. I'm talking a return to the gritty look (possibly filming on 35mm again?) and bringing back those kickass heavy metal soundtracks. Also, I'm concerned about the cast. I think the current people behind SAW want to make these movies more accessible to newer audiences by not mentioning Hoffman or Amanda, the two known Jigsaw apperentices. Again, a film between SAW 1 and 2 would involve support from Amanda and Hoffman. Without them, it really won't feel right to me, but I don't think Lionsgate has any plans to bring back Shawnee Smith and Costas Mandylor. Now obviously, all of these suggestions would be expensive and with SAW not being the money making giant it once was, the budget is not going to be as high as it once was. I really think the people behidn SAW X do not think it is worth the budgetary hits to incorporate all of these elements to make this film fit neatly into the SAW continuity.
Maybe I'm the only one who gives a shit about these details because I'm a old fan so nostalgia is on my side, but I feel like there is a lot that needs to be balanced out in order to 1) to make this film good and 2) make this film work in the already established continuity (stylistically and plot-wise).
I just finished binge watching NCIS on Netflix (the first 15 seasons anyway) and I've noticed a lot of the actors from the Saw franchise have rolls (mostly villains) in the show. Probably most notable being Dina Meyer who plays Det. Kerry in Saw as Holly Snow and Costas Mandylor we know as Hoffman as another dirty cop who gets sniped by Gibbs. Side note: anyone seen Costas in anything besides Saw? His character on NCIS came off as kind of a Hoffman 2.0. Anyway, I thought it would have been really interesting to see some of the people from NCIS either as cops or victims in Saw. Not Gibbs of course because I couldn't bear to see him get killed onscreen. Thoughts?
Okay so from what I've heard about this movie in the past, is that Tobin Bell is the only actor returning. No Shawnee Smith, Costas Mandylor, or Cary Elwes. It's also supposed to be a midquel, set between the first two movies. Seeing is how Amanda, Hoffman and Gordon were heavily involved with Jigsaw at that time period, how are they going to leave them out?
I've seen quite a few posts about Saw 3D, I will admit this movie is not my favourite but I don't dislike it either. I will still watch it happily while marathoning the series (despite the Brazen Bull....seriously hate that scene) but I'd thought I'd write some points about what I like about the film and maybe get a thread going about the good in Saw 3D :)
So if you're a Saw 3D fan, you're in the right place!
Firstly, I like the traps (with one exception) that Bobby goes through. They are all brutal and genuinely suspenseful, the Fish Hook trap had me on the edge of my seat the first viewing. The suspense that one builds is just nail biting.
The score is good, Charlie Clouser is always a delight in these movies. I always enjoy his music.
Most of the actors are good, I like Sean Patrick Flannery, Costas Mandylor and Betsy Russell a lot. You can just tell Mandylor is 100% on board with his character in the film and he makes for a great villain.
I have a soft spot for Jigsaw for that being the first Saw movie I saw in the cinema, but Saw 3D was the first one I bought with my own money on my 18th. So it has that nostalgia in a way
So those are the things that save Saw 3D for me, how about everyone else? Feel the same way? I'd love to chat about positives for Saw 3D :)
I've read several rumors that Darren Lynn Bousman is in talks to bring Hoffman back in the next film (or a future film) which would therefore erase the Saw 3D interview saying that Hoffman was indeed dead. Costas Mandylor being obviously on board, we'll just have to wait and see what happens (and if it can avoid a Spiral 2, I say yes).

This is maybe a fake, I don't know. But it it isn't, then it's a good news.
In Saw V it seemed they meant for him to be a multi dimensional character whose love for his sister drove him to the darkness. In VI suddenly he's a one note villain, by 3D he's basically a talking Michael Myers. Why did they do this?
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
There are speculations that Costas Mandylore may come back in Saw 9. Logan was revealed to be the first apprentice and he might have been interested in saving Hoffman, to help him out in his games.
So could it be possible? Plus it would add more connectivity to the series.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Please π₯Ί I used to absolutely DESPISE this man but now I wanna cuddle his dad bod. I still hate him for all the bad things he did (unnecessarily killing innocent people and being a bad cop) but I love him too. Idk maybe I'm just thirsting over Costas Mandylor :P
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π

Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me that my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
