I mean, you gotta use him somewhere. Who should he play?
Okay, this is a bit of a strange theory, but I've become pretty convinced of it after thinking more about it. Brandon Sanderson has shown multiple times to love subverting common fantasy tropes (Evil Emperor, having whole races/species of Always Chaotic Evil Enemies, and similar examples), being particularly adept at pulling the rug out of you when you thought that you had a handle on the situation (all of Mistborn Era 1, Voidbringers/Dawnsingers in the Stormlight Archive, having some Fused be more morally right than some of the Heralds, etc).
I think that Odium is going to end up being a similar situation. Right now we think of him as the "Big Bad of the Cosmere that wants to sow destruction and hatred across the worlds and kill every other Shard in the world". He's already killed Honor, Ambition, Devotion, and Dominion, and is trying to kill even more Shards (we don't know what his relationship with Cultivation is, though, which is interesting, because she caused his death and replacement with Taravangian and it seems like all the thousands of years that he's spent trapped in the Rosharan system could have given him an opportunity to try to kill Cultivation).
And that's all accurate. He's absolutely evil and a bad guy, and he definitely wants to kill some of our favorite characters, but I don't think that his larger goal (destroying all of the Shards) is actually a bad thing. I think that later into the Cosmere it's going to become pretty clear that Shards are bad news, and the goal of Odium to destroy every other Shard in the Cosmere is overall beneficial to the people of the Cosmere (assuming that they could avoid being ruled over by a tyrannical god, that is).
Now, this is a pretty mighty claim, so I'll point you to some parts of the Cosmere that I think support this view:
First point; "His name will be Discord, but they shall love Him for it." Brandon Sanderson has already stated that it's possible that Harmony could have a different name if he weren't able to control the differences between the two intents of his Shards. This almost definitely is referring to the quote from the first Mistborn trilogy discussing someone whose name is "Discord" (capitalized like all Shards), and "they" shall love "Him" for it. It's a very common theory about this are that somehow Sazed will become more unable to control the differences between the Shards Ruin and Preservation and end up becoming Discor

Since we don't have any more cosmere books till November, was wondering about the advisability of reading that series.
I just want to hear everybody's crazy ideas or perfectly reasonable and boring ideas about what could happen in the next book.
And no particular order, my ideas are that sadman and baldeyes go to the land west of the mountains and have to fight some unmade. Maybe they'll rescue that guy and they'll show Dalinar how to put Legos together or something., I'm not exactly sure what they're hoping for with ishar.
I have absolutely no idea what the next book holds for Adolin or shallan
I would have to guess that Dalinar is being set up to throw this fight because he doesn't want to kill whoever odiumn's champion will be, and I have no real guess as to who that is honestly.
I don't know what's going to happen with the tower, I think we're going to lose delanar, so I don't know what that would do to the storm father.
I really just want more dabbed and noril.
Ninja edit: I think the champion is gavinor
second edit: i hate people that drop in multiple edits
third edit: i didnt expect to get this many real responses. I've read all of them and wow, I am so impressed with what people have been bubbling about in their brainbuckets. Thanks to everyone with their comments.
Iβm a bit worried he wonβt have time to finish the cosmere. The 10th stormlight archive book wonβt come out until probably 2050 (this is with pessimistic calculations). Already heβll be 74. Then heβs got the dragonsteel books and mistborn era 4. And those are gonna be long I presume. So like unless he can use some investiture to halt his aging Iβm afraid we may not get to read his planned booksβ¦
Not that he owes us anything but itβd be fun to see the backstory of Hoid and the shattering and stuff.
I like to have a general idea, but what I enjoy the most are the stories and characters. I thought ROW got too technical for me with Navanis research on voidlight and anti-voidlight, it got the point I just didn't understand it much lol. It may just be that I'm scientifically illiterate but that was the only downside of that book for me.
FYI: have read and reread every cosmere book and love them all. I like knowledge of the magic too, just not all the minutiae of all the exact mechanisms.
1,2,3, GO.
There have been a lot of discussions asking people's favorite characters, but this one is about how well written they are. You can absolutely hate the character you pick as long as they were written to be hated. For me, its probably Wax. He's not even the character I enjoy the most in Era 2, but I love his seemingly total lack of plot armor, and the fact that nothing just happens for him and feels unsatisfying, but he also never does anything that seems out of character. What character do you guys think is written really well, even for Brandon standards?
Hi there. I had a little time on my hands and I was going crazy thinking about when all the cosmere books will be coming out. So I looked around a bit and wrote out an estimated Release date for all the books I could find. Keep in mind that the further away the blurrier things get, but in general I think it's pretty accurate. That's assuming everything goes well. Stay hopeful.

Quote of the year: "Did you just try to use your breasts to prove the existence of God?"
I had some thoughts after re-reading RoW and wanted to discuss, but wasn't sure how to go about spoilers because this has pretty massive implications for the Cosmere as a whole. Mods, if I'm off on tags/flair or anything please let me know.
So, I was reflecting on Ishar's attempt at not only taking Dalinar's bond to the Stormfather, but also implying he was going to take his connection to his people, and to Odium. Essentially taking Dalinar's role not only as Bondsmith to the Stormfather, but also as leader of Urithiru, AND as Odium's chosen champion/foe.
So, does this mean a full Bondsmith can change relationships between the Shards and their invested?
Like say.... Kelsier? Who is having issues getting out of the Scadrian system due to being over-invested. I'm tempted to say no, because why hasn't Ishar helped Kalak, but at the same time, Ishar is frikkin' insane. I know Nale claims to be on good terms with Ishar in Edgedancer but he's not all there either. They may both view their duties as Heralds as still ongoing, while Kalak sees things as lost and just wants out.
But anyway, we see these implications in Mistborn over what Feruchemical duralumin can do, forming and lessening Connection (capital C, like Fortune, which also hasn't been expounded upon yet). We see that Dalinar can speak the local languages like a South Scadrian medallion and repair objects by looking at it's spiritweb and making it whole again, like Forgery. Kelsier was only able to use Preservation's power by first dowsing himself in Connection, and Dalinar can open up Honor's equivalent of the Well of Ascension, practically on command.
So would Dalinar be able to say, Connect Roshar to Sel and then Elantrians would be able to use AonDor? Could he grant multiple Nahel Bonds to one Radiant? Could he depower a mistborn? Could he summon enough investiture directly into the cognitive realm to collapse the economy of shadesmar? I believe the biggest thing we see is that Ishar can APPARENTLY open true portals between the physical and cognitive realms, as evidenced by the spren in his mad science tent. Not even the oathgates allow for that.
In terms of fighting potential and also other non-combat abilities.
Iβm curious to hear your opinion on this topic
In the most recent spoiler Livestream (or maybe it was a BYU lecture, the videos are running together) Sanderson mentioned that he changed the ending of the original mistborn to make it so that Vin drew on the mists to kill the Lord ruler. He said it was a change that was made because the editors said the ending wasn't climactic enough and that it's a change that he regretted making because even though it was a very sensational ending, it seemed like he was just pulling a random power out of nowhere.
How would Vin have pulled this off without the mists even if she found out about the Lord ruler being a terrisman as well?
I understand it's meant to be considered as a different iteration of the turning of the wheel, and we shouldn't expect it to be a direct translation. But so much of the essence of the series has been lost. Why change so many fundamentals of an already great story?
I'm not gonna go into details here because it's a BS reddit, but from some of the posts made by Brandon ahout the series I understand that his comments were somewhat listened to but he didnt have much power other than suggestions. If theres a cosmere live adaptation in the future I hope he puts his foot down to keep the essences of the story there.
Honestly I'd prefer an animated series 100% for most, like SA.
I had this discussion with a friend that read most of the cosmere (I've read it all except RoW), and he said that the Kingkiller world has more depth. I couldn't disagree more, the universe that Brando Sando built is much bigger and deeper, if it's the world building, like plants and unique attributes or the magic systems on each planet. It's just mind boggling the amount of thought he put into it.
Kingkiller Chronicles was my top 1 series but because of the sheer output of the author and the unique worlds of each book - the cosmere is superior, IMO.
Thoughts?
Ever since the recent success of adult animated shows such as "Arcane" and "Love, Death, and Robots", I've noticed a lot of people asking for an animated Cosmere show. And while I agree that a well made Sanderson animated series could be amazing; I thought that as someone who works for the studio behind "Love, Death, and Robots", I might be able to point out some of the pros and cons of animation, as well as my thoughts about what it means for sci-fi/fantasy adaptations in general.
The biggest advantage of animation when compared to live action is control over reality. Ideally it lets you get to define exactly what shows up in the frame and exactly how you want it to look. The fact that you are defining your own reality in an animated film also means that you can do crazy physics breaking stuff that would just look silly if you tried to replicate it in live action. But all of that control comes with certain costs attached, the most obvious one being $$$.
Animation can be crazy expensive. Thanks to the total control it gives you, you are also required to handcraft the contents of every frame. Recent Pixar films for example can run up to $30,000 per second, which is well above the Hollywood film average of $9,600.
However it doesn't have to be that costly. There are lots of animation styles and production tricks that can be used to drive down prices. "Arcane" used a stylized look, lower quality animation, and their ability to reuse locations and assets across their 6.5 hour runtime helped bring their costs as low as $7,000 per second. Meanwhile Anime, which has been the king of cutting corners for years, has an an even more impressive average of $600 per second. That being said though, there is a vast visual difference between those two ends of the spectrum.
Here is a link to a fun little site I like showing people when they ask me how much it would cost to make their animated film idea. And that's without including the cost of actors, sound, and distribution!
So animation gives us lots of control and a pretty wide budget range -- what doesn't it give us?
I think the biggest difficulty for animation is grounding itself in reality. When you can create anything, it can often be easier to create something that doesn't exist than something that does. The photo-realistic human still proves to be one of the most difficult things to animate, and virtual cameras and lighting still aren't quite on par with t
... keep reading on reddit β‘So I started the Cosmere with Mistborn after not reading books for years, and immediately binged everything and finished RoW a few weeks back.
I'm currently reading The Lies of Locke Lamora after seeing it recommended a lot but really struggling to get into it.
Anybody else struggle to read other things after Sanderson? What books did you go to afterwards? Would love to hear suggestions.
I don't know if this has been said yet I assume it has but it was like a rock hit me after mistborn. It's not the factions it's not just about Roshar. I think it's about uniting all the shards. If not all shards then at least the three on Roshar.
Brandon has raised the question of whether cognitive shadows are actually the original individual, since they're basically reconstructed investiture.
We tend to imagine them still as themselves, more or less, but if they're technically a cognitive creation, this could make them subject to the fluctuations of human cognition regarding their legacy.
We assume the heralds are psychologically a mess because of their millennia of existence, but it's possible the broken shadows we see now are broken more specifically due to the way their legacies have been eroded/diluted over time. As an example: What if the Taln we know is even more bad-ass than the original man, because the stories told of him focused so specifically on his unbreakable nature?
This could also have a lot of implications with Kelsier, who used less-than-honest means to deify himself into a savior role. Is it possible that the shadow of the man we once knew is now, to some extent, a believer of his own deception? Has the church constructed in his wake shaped the Lord of Scars into a different version of the Survivor we once knew?
I just started Sixth of the Dusk, aside from that I've read everything except Arcanum Unbound, which I'll explore after this. My plan is to after that give Mistborn Era 1 a bit of a refresher and then maybe Stormlight again. Then I'll probably explore some other authors lol. What about you?
There's dozens of little things that just cripple people, but get looked over. What do y'all think of with that?
In RoW we know that Thaidakar is Kelsier, leader of the Ghostbloods and that they have multiple goals and multiple agents among the Cosmere.
In Secret History it shows that Kelsier meet Leras, Vessel of Preservations that was dying and after steal the orb from The Ire he was able to ascend to Preservation after the death of Leras. We know that the Vessels at the moment to ascend they enter in an inner battle with their Shardβs Intent that can change their personality and psyche in the best-case scenario a Vessel can change or alter the Shard Intent, like Ati with Ruinβs Intent, allowing control Ruin and lowering the destruction that was capable to do. We can see this same inner battle in the TaravangianΒ΄s ascension and even with Sazed struggling with the Harmonyβs Intent.
Rashek as a Vessel of Preservation he keeps the Intent to preserve Scadrial, even with the use of dictatorial ways, he still wanted to preserve, keep order and everything static.
Returning to Kelsier, at the end of Secret History he manages to speak with Spook, and he tell him that the lack of information about the Cosmere almost destroy the planet and how is a bigger game out there, my theory is the next one.
Kelsier want to keep and preserve Scadrial. he wants to Scadrial to be the most important point in the Cosmere so important and advanced that no one out there can mees with the planet without a fight.
Many people travel to Roshar because the Investiture is easy to get, we had seen Nalthian and Scadrians in the planet, probably there are people from all the Cosmere living in Roshar.
We know some of the goals of the Ghostbloods to find a way to take Stormlight offworld and tradable, that would make Scadrial the most important planet in the Cosmere, you want to travel among the Cosmere and keep your powers? Pay a fee to Scadrial.
So im reading through all of the cosmere before starting SA. I really would prefer not to read white sand. What should I know about white sand that ties into cosmere. No spoilers for anything other than white sand please
I've heard of it, and hearing of it is where I first saw Brandon's name, but I haven't read it. After I finish my Cosmere reread, I'd like to start a new series, but I'm not sure where to go next. Would any fans like to write a summary/"trailer" for the series?
Edit: Thank you all for responding! That's a lot of comments, I was expecting like 5 maybe. Based on your average input I think I'll try it out. The Cosmere really does have the nicest fans.
As the title says. Maybe someone has recommandations which order would make the most sense. In fact I would like to read all Cosmere books.
Thanks in advance!
With all technology seen in the latest books.
