Thanks for the responses.
My understanding of Nazi anti-semitism is that it was purely hereditary and not religious (Jewish -> Christian converts were also targeted).
I imagine most people converting to Judaism at this time would have done so for marriage, and that's already running afoul of anti-miscegenation laws.
cause wow, that would be messed up
I'm using a throw away because I don't know what answer I'm expecting or if I'm in any way offending anyone, I just want to make clear that it's not my intention to offend anyone with my ignorance about the matter.
I never was a religious person or never had any serious contact with any religion. My parents have some Christian background when they were kids but they were never believers. Nothing was passed on to me in that matter so I was kept ignorant about it and never developed any interest for the religion that was available to me in school (Christianity).
I'm going to be honest here, the word "jew" was always thrown around with a negative connotation in my surroundings/country, Portugal, so out of ignorance I too thought the word "jew" was bad and it was not very good to be associated with jews, with no real reason or logic and more like a by-product of my upbringing and lack of interest in religious aspects of life (or the particular religion available to me). I naturally became an agnostic.
I don't really have a sense of community because my parents were always moving from one place to the other, I moved schools a lot and that's just the way I was brought up.
I always felt something was missing in my life and fought with depression a lot.
Fast forward to today I start reading about Judaism and about the values, helping your brother jew, give back to the community, take advise from the wise people in the community, eating right, raise your youth right with the right values while keeping a relation with the one above through the Torah. I started thinking, this sure looks right. You work hard, you help each other, you follow values, you save, you invest, you give back, you grow strong together. Why shouldn't everyone do the same?
I start wondering, what stops me from becoming a Jew? I know it's very hard and takes a lot of time, dedication and study, but that's not what I am seeking answers about.
Lets just suppose that I am able to become a Jew.
My question is: Will I ever be treated as an equal or I will always be the a step behind in the Jew community and not earn as much respect as a Jew-born?
Thanks for your time and your answers. Please tolerate my ignorance.
Jews are defined as people born to Jewish mothers or people who have formally converted to Judaism. Does this still apply if your mom was a convert, or do you have to formally convert too? Would it depend on whether she converted before or after you were born?
Also, what if you were adopted by Jews but your birth parents were Gentiles, like Michael Bay? Does Jewishness still transfer through adoption?
I want to create Israel with them and I know they're already Jewish in 867, but they were already sort of past their historical prime by then so I'm playing the Charlemagne start date and looking to convert them myself. However there's no Jewish courtiers anywhere to start the process. Will I get them after I build this Radhanite upgrade to my trade post? Or is there some event where the Khazars get them sometime in the 800s?
He heard that Vladimir Putin likes to drink vodka with orange jews.
Sorry, I won't give any background because I have already been doxxed on other accounts in this website, and I don't that to happen again, especially with something so personal as that.
A fake, but real, conversion paper would make it with a good lie. I wouldn't mind it being in english, because I do have a hebrew friend in America and he might help me out here.
Best scenario if somebody could sell me one, because I think the papers might have a watermark or it's special paper.
I'm more atheistic, but still wanna see how my forefathers lived and things and my parents already went through the roof about me, so they aren't a big of a help.
Did anybody else ever did that? Or what should I be cautious of?
Pic of the papers, but somehow I can't change it into a word. Wow.
I just find it so fascinating that his Central Asian Turkic people converted to Judaism while most of their relatives were Tengri worshipers. What motivated to them to become Jews and would you consider them Jews?
On a related, are people descended from Khazars like the Krymchaks able to apply for Israeli citizenship?
Hello!
Alright, so basically as the title says, my girlfriend really wants to convert. Iβm freaking stoked because itβs never been important to me and neither me nor my family has asked her to. She just really wants to! Weβre getting ready to find a rabbi now, but our question is basically:
During an orthodox conversion are we not allowed to touch/have sex? Must it all stop?
From what Iβve read, the stipulation is βestablish an emotional and spiritual connection with each other,β and I would say we are way beyond that. We dated in high school for about 4 years, broke up, and have been talking/seeing each other for the last 11 months. Iβve sent a text to my rabbi, and weβre going to ask another when we meet with him/her, but just want to see what other people may have come across.
Thank you in advance for your responses, and have an awesome day π€π»
EDIT/Answer from my rabbi: For all those wanting to know, my rabbi got back to me. He said that if anyone decided to convert to Judaism, βAccording to Jewish law one should refrain from any physical contact until after the Chupa.β So no touching at all. Wow!
I wanna get out of India. I never like this archaic psedo-feudal patriarchal country masquerading as a democracy.
Whenever I hear people talking about Judaism they are usually born in a Jewish family or had Jewish ancestors. Maybe I'm living under a rock but I've never talked with anyone who converted to the religion without having had Jewish descent. Can a person who doesn't have Jewish people in their family convert to it or is that not possible?
Thanks for your help guys. /s.
Hello! Recent years, I find myself straying away from my families overall belief of Christianity, and for a while I was left out of faith. Recently, I was talking to my Jewish friend about her beliefs, and I found myself nodding and agreeing with most of what she was saying. She didn't know the steps of actually converting, so now here I am on Reddit. I've googled the necessary steps of becoming a Jew, and I was wondering if anyone here could help? Any comment helps!
Iβm kind of researching into the topic of anti semitism & watched a great video by a Jewish, kind of, political activist - who made a video about judaism being more of a heritage of people less than an actual religion.
So I wondered - if thatβs the case, how do people even convert to Judaism, when Judaism is actually in peopleβs DNA?
I am still in the process of deciding whether or not I do want to convert to Judaism. One of my many questions and concerns that I have is about wanting to convert to another movement as a Jewish convert. I'm deciding between reform and conservative, because i'm of the belief that our understanding of G-d and halakha change overtime because we humans are fallible creatures, which is why I am not seeking an Orthodox conversion. I'm a noahide by default, but I want to do more for my faith in God and want to be a part of the Jewish faith and people, one way or another.
Iβm new to this subreddit but it probably fits me well. Iβve questioned religion my whole life; my dad tried to raise us fundamentalist Southern Baptist until we got old enough to stop going to church with him (now he doesnβt go, either). Parents divorced in 2008 because my dad is a narcissist and was verbally abusive. I came out as gay to my mom in 2014. She is a very liberal Christian and very supportive. My dad is now okay with me being gay and likes my boyfriend β so Iβm glad to see heβs changed. Iβm 18 now, and live with my boyfriend.
Jump to a couple years ago. I considered myself a very liberal Christian and felt at home in my new, gay-friendly church. That is until I discovered I have Jewish ancestors and decided to research their religion more. Well, I decided that Judaism makes a lot more sense to me than Christianity. The Messiah cannot have came yet if the world is this awful. Plus many more reasons. Anyways, Iβve decided to start converting to Reform Judaism and Iβm wondering what everyone here has to say. Comments, questions, ask me anything.
Hi Everyone,
I am a rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles. For my rabbinical thesis, I am researching the experiences of people who have converted to Judaism or are in the process of converting. I am seeking interview participants who have the following characteristics:
* Is 18 years or older, AND
* Has converted to Judaism as an adult, OR is in the process of conversion to Judaism; AND
* Is willing to consent to participate in this project by engaging in an interview of approximately 60 minutes. The interviews can be conducted in person, by video conference (Zoom, Google Hangouts, Facetime, Skype, etc.), or by telephone.
If you are interested in participating in this study, I'd love to hear from you via PM. I will be happy to share my e-mail address to facilitate communication with anyone you think would be interested. Please let me know by PM if you have any questions about this project. Thank you!
