A list of puns related to "Consuelo Vanderbilt"
Obsessed with the show so far & all the gorgeous costumes & backgrounds. Can anyone recommend more shows like this besides Downton Abbey? Documentaries about the era as well!
Iβm glad that the show isnβt a straight-up prequel to Downton Abbey. I absolutely love this period in New York, and there are so many juicy real life characters and situations that have been included in the show. Itβs a good thing that the story can take shape independently.
But little connections between the shows will make me happy.
I immediately felt one of these when Caroline Astor was mentioned. Mrs. A makes me think of 3 things: Ward McAllister, the Four Hundred, and the death of her son John Jacob, in the sinking of the Titanic.
That last thing took me right back to the very first episode (and one of the first moments) of Downton Abbey, around 30 years later. Cora is reading about the Titanic disaster in the morning paper, wondering out loud if JJ Astor made it off the ship, as Robert comes in to tell her the news that the two Crawleys were lost in the disaster.
I donβt know if they plan to eventually introduce a young Cora on Gilded Age. Even without that, there will be lots of little connections. For example, even if these American socialites donβt know Violet Crawley personally, that is exactly who they aspire to be (with a NY snobbish twist). The specter of the British aristocracy hangs over them (and Iβm sure weβll see some of the NY matriarchs trying to marry their daughters to English titles before long).
What do you think weβll see, and what do you wish for?
Hi everyone! You all were so helpful with another post, I thought would ask too. I want to make a podcast about the salacious stories behind mansions. For example, one episode will be about The Vanderbiltβs marble House and how Mrs. Vanderbilt locked Consuelo up inside until she agreed to marry the βrightβ man. My working title is historic hauntings but Iβm not sure if that works, because they arenβt really haunted. Any help is appreciated.
Thereβs a lot of references to βCoraβs fortuneβ, Matthew inheriting βa fortuneβ from Laviniaβs father, βkeeping the estate goingβ and so on in the show. If you ask anyone to give you a 2021 figure for sums in the 1910βs/20βs, youβll always get a different answer based on inflation, CPI, real wages etc. Has there ever been any data on what the actual financial figures referred to on the show are, in 1910βs/1920βs figures?
Iβve read that one of the better-known heiresses of the era, Consuelo Vanderbilt brought the Duke of Marlborough a dowry of $2,500,000 (Β£500,000) and an annual allowance of $100,000 each when she married him in the late 1800βs, and in 1900 the richest aristocrat in the UK, the 1st Duke of Westminster, had an annual income of about Β£300,000.
In the season 4 Christmas Special I seem to remember Tom asking Edith why Grantham House in London wasnβt sold when LG lost the money, and Edith said βit would have been, but not for nearly enough to save usβ. When Devonshire House was sold in the 20βs, the house and its 3 acres of Primo London Real Estate sold for Β£750,000. The huge house they use for Grantham House wouldnβt go for that, but it would easily be a few hundred thousand pounds by comparison. Seems hard to contemplate that Reggie Swire had Β£200-300k laying around without anyone clueing in.
Would love to hear othersβ thoughts on this!
As the first decade of the 20th Century grew older the signs of the coming storms multiplied. In 1903 the British Government had offered Uganda to Zionism and Max Nordau had publicly foretold "the future world war," in the sequence to which England would procure Palestine for Zionism. In 1905 the Protocols prophetically revealed the destructive orgy of Communism. Then in 1906 one Mr. Arthur James Balfour, Prime Minister of England, met Dr. Weizmann in a hotel room and was captivated by the notion of presenting Palestine, which was not his to give, to "the Jews."
The shape which "the future world war" would take was then determined. Mr. Balfour stood guard over the new century and yielded the pass. A different man, in his place, might have saved it; or another might have done the same, for by 1906 the hidden mechanism for exerting "irresistible pressure on the international affairs of the present" (Leon Pinsker, 1882) had evidently been perfected. Rabbi Elmer Berger says of that time, "that group of Jews which committed itself to Zionism β¦ entered a peripatetic kind of diplomacy which took it into many chancelleries and parliaments, exploring the labyrinthine and devious ways of international politics in a part of the world where political intrigue and secret deals were a byword. Jews began to play the game of 'practical politics.β" The era of the malleable "administrators" and compliant "premier-dictators," all furthering the great plan, was beginning. Therefore any other politician, put in Mr. Balfourβs place at that time, might have acted similarly. However, his name attaches to the initial misdeed.
His actions are almost unaccountable in a man of such birth, training and type. Research cannot discover evidence of any other motive than an infatuation, of the "liberal" sort, for an enterprise which he did not even examine in the light of duty and wisdom. "Hard-boiled" considerations of "practical politics" (that is, a cold calculation that money or votes might be gained by supporting Zionism) can hardly be suspected in him. He and his colleagues belonged to the oldest families of England, which carried on a long tradition of public service. Statesmanship was in their blood; understanding of government and knowledge of foreign affairs were instinctive in them; they represented the most successful ruling class in recorded history; and they were wealthy.
Why, then, did instinct, tradition and wisdom suddenly desert them in this one question, at the moment

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
The nurse asked the rabbit, βwhat is your blood type?β
βI am probably a type Oβ said the rabbit.
The doctor says it terminal.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat
Black people in the United States face increased likelihood of adverse health outcomes compared to white people. For example, rates of heart disease, stroke, and infant mortality are higher for Black people -- Black babies are over twice as likely to survive when treated by Black doctors. Health outcome models and algorithms even predict that Black people are sicker than white people with similar health risk. Medical research and practice have long devalued the humanity of Black people in the United States, too: Black men were misled, mistreated, and abused by studies like the Tuskegee syphilis study; Black women have much higher likelihood of dying from pregnancy complications, their symptoms often being dismissed by doctors; and Black people in the United States receive worse healthcare than white people while also having less access to high-quality care. Today, our panelists will discuss these issues and more.
As mentioned in a previous announcement post, the moderators of /r/science have worked in collaboration with the moderators of /r/blackpeopletwitter and /r/blackladies to create this series of discussion panels focused on race in America. These panels will be led by subject area specialists including scientists, researchers, and policy professionals so that we can engage with multiple expert perspectives on those important topics. A list of the panels, guests, and dates can be found here.
Our guests will be answering throughout the day under the account u/health_inequities. With us today are:

We told her she can lean on us for support. Although, we are going to have to change her driver's license, her height is going down by a foot. I don't want to go too far out on a limb here but it better not be a hack job.
Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.
