A Latin scholar travels to Rome in order to visit the Colosseum. He walks into a bar to ask for directions.

The Latin scholar says to the bartender: "Salve! Nemo vestri hoc scriptum intelleget ergo quis se curat?"

The bartender says: "It's been a long time since you last visited Rome, hasn't it?"

When in Rome… but did you know the colosseum isn’t in fact a circle? Historians believe the elliptical shape was chosen as it allows for a larger area with fewer building materials. For example, doubling the area of a circle gives a much larger perimeter than building an ellipse of the same area.

What forms of "Survival Games" ever happened in real life apart from the gladiator games in Rome's Colosseum? In which cultures?

Bit of a silly question, I know...

Just so: Inspired by lots of media from recent years, that show some forms of staged survival games, where a rich elite watches some poorer people playing against each other, often in forms of death or life games (like "The Purge", "Squid Game", probably "The Hunger Games" etc.) I wondered...

What are the historical inspirations behind these works? What's the most recent example of such a "game" (actually form of torture)? Are there other less famous examples, than what happened in the roman colosseum? Etc.

Any answer will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!
