In cloud to ground lightning what does the part of the bolt that’s up in the clouds look like? U can never see it because it’s always hidden by clouds. Does the lightning start in one spot or come together from many spots before leaving the cloud?

Thunder is caused by lightning. When a lightning bolt travels from the cloud to the ground it actually opens up a little hole in the air, called a channel. Once then light is gone the air collapses back in and creates a sound wave that we hear as thunder.
ELI5: How does lightning know where to strike on the ground when the energy is in the clouds? How does it know that there is a metal pole on the ground?
Lightning: so I'm guessing that there is a charge leaking from the clouds to the ground. Then, when this creates enough heat, it turns the air into plasma, then the process is repeated. Why does it come back up though, is this just an optical illusion from speed of light?
