Jumping on the bandwagon. Top comment gets to remove a character from CJK Unified Ideographs (including Extensions and CJK Compatibility Ideographs). After 92,864 days, who will be the lone survivor?

Owing to space restrictions, I am of course unable to print the entirety of CJK Unified Ideographs here.

I stupidly assumed that it being 2021, an expensive device like this would support UTF8 out of the box. You know, because 2021, and some people can speak more than one language. Sigh.

I found https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=13027, which looks a little like it might be what I am looking for. Is it? So, like, I need to flash the bios? In 2021?

Why do CJK fonts make Latin characters look so awful? Are there any CJK typefaces that have acceptable Western glyphs?

I've been reading about Chinese (and other CJK) fonts and any time that I've been on an East Asian site, I have seen the awful Latin characters: scrunched, needlessly thin, somehow a mix of the ugliest elements of serif and monospaced fonts. (If you've never seen it, see http://www.kendraschaefer.com/2012/06/chinese-standard-web-fonts-the-ultimate-guide-to-css-font-family-declarations-for-web-design-in-simplified-chinese/). Surely Chinese-language font designers (including Western companies like Microsoft!) want the Latin text to look good. Are these just stylistic and aesthetic preferences that I don't share and East Asians generally like this look? Is this done for compatibility reasons? The Western fonts end up so thin and tiny that they are much smaller than CJK characters, so it seems like it can't be a spacing issue.

Additionally, does anyone know of a CJK font that has Latin or other script characters (e.g. Cyrillic) that look good on their own or that anyone in languages that use those scripts would ever actually use for running text in those languages?

System Font Displaying incorrect variants of CJK characters

I occasionally read/use simplified Chinese characters, and I noticed for the first time about 2 months ago that my system was displaying incorrect variants of some characters.

I'm hoping someone here knows what could be causing this, because I'm going slightly crazy trying to figure it out and I can't really nail down a search term that will get me results that even resemble my problem.

Three example characters I can give are ้—จ, ไบฎ, and ไปค; which for me all display as the 'Japanese' variant of the character indicated on the Wiktionary page despite being input using the Windows Chinese IME and displaying (in the IME) as the simplified Chinese variant indicated on Wiktionary.

This occurs system-wide and is only remedied on my display when (apparently) a different font is forced by the app. Examples of this:

  • The Wiktionary pages linked above display correctly, excepting the title which is displayed incorrectly.
  • Firefox displays incorrect versions by default, and Google Translate IME displays incorrect, but Google translate 'translates' them to the correct versions (using a different font) which if copied will paste back as the incorrect versions. Image
  • Windows10 search bar (Win + typing) displays incorrect versions in the search bar, however the results are all displayed correctly (in a different font). Image
  • Windows Edge does not appear to have this problem, however it is present in Notepad, Notepad++, Explorer (oddly, excluding ้—จ), and every other application I can think of which has text entry but not font selection.

Please tell me someone has experienced this before.

CJK Character drawing feature for elearning course

Note: I originally posted this in r/instructionaldesign but I can't find it there anymore, hence I am posting here instead.

TLDR: Is it possible to build a type of exercise where students have to correctly draw CJK Characters or other shapes in order to pass?

Longer version:

Hi all

I have a Chinese course that I would like to convert to an online course. The course was originally instructor led and taught in small groups face to face or occasionally online. I need to have a type of lesson/assignment where students draw Chinese characters using a touch screen or tablet and get instant feedback and a score that could be integrated into an LMS solution (xapi?)

I am wondering if anyone would happen to have a solution for this (I hope this is the right place to ask). I would prefer using authoring tools if possible but since I do not have any experience in Captivate as this will be my first elearning course, I don't really know if these tools would allow for this type of scenario. I am open to using any technology or service that could do the job especially if these solutions could somehow talk back to the LMS to record a student's score.

I have seen many apps with such functionality and have always wondered if there was a way to implement this without hiring software developers. I tried to do some research about this but mostly ended up finding research papers about shape context and a few js libraries.

Here is a picture showing what I am trying to do: https://goo.gl/images/V45bNy

My background is in teaching, but I also have basic understanding of HTML/CSS/JS/PHP and course design for instructor led learning, so I'd be willing to consider a wide variety of options.

I assume using a JS library could be a solution but I'd like to know if there are some simpler or more straightforward solutions I may have missed before sinking more time or money into this.

I hope this post will help other people as well. Your suggestions will be immensely appreciated!

[Formula 1] The 2020 F1 season championship battle- Part 1

EDIT: PLEASE IGNORE THE TITLE, THIS IS ABOUT 2021, NOT 2020 I AM SO ANNOYED AT MYSELF GGAAAAHHHHHH

Hello r/Hobbydrama. This is the first part in a series that has the potential to go on a while if the interest is there. I would like to discuss the F1 2021 season with you as it is a hell of a story. Thereโ€™s far too much to cover in one instalment, honestly I could spend the whole year writing about the last race alone but thatโ€™s too recent so weโ€™d better start at the beginning to give you some context, in fact the whole reason I am writing this piece is to build up to the season finale in Abu Dhabi since it is possibly the most insane, ludicrous, ridiculous thing I've ever seen. If this series fizzles out due to lack of interest, so be it. Iโ€™ll probably write the first two or three pieces regardless of upvotes and weโ€™ll see how we go from there. If youโ€™d like to help write the series, please feel free to DM me on Discord at Spiral#6601 and weโ€™ll try and sort something out. Thereโ€™s so much stuff that went on thereโ€™s no way I can remember it all so some notes and help would be appreciated, fully credited of course.

Also if someone could tell me what the limits for "long" and "extra long" as flairs are, that would be great. This is ~2500 words for reference.

Anyway, without further ado, what is F1?

Formula 1- What the hell is it?

Formula 1 is the pinnacle of racing. Started in 1950, the F1 circus travels to racetracks in far flung corners of the Earth to bring the spectacle of racing to the world. You might know races like the Monaco Grand Prix or one of the several different United States Grand Prix that have taken place across 10 different venues (did you know that the Indy500 used to count towards the F1 world championship despite running completely different regulations?) Whatever country you live in, chances are thereโ€™s been an F1 race there at some point. F1 has two different championships, the World Driversโ€™ Championship, where each driverโ€™s points are added up over the season and the top driver at the end of the season wins the biggest prize in motorsport, and the World Constructorsโ€™ Championship, where the total of each teamโ€™s drivers points are added together to form a championship table. While the Driversโ€™ championship is more prestigious, prize money is actually divvied up according to the Constructorsโ€™ championship. The teams all build their cars according

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Question: St cannot print the sindresorhus/pure prompt, why?

I'm trying to move from Alacritty to st to address the ambiguous character width issue. However, st does not seem to be able to correctly display the symbol "โฏ" used in the pure prompt.

The left side is st, and the right side is alacrity.

So, I applied the font2 patch and tried setting some fonts, but it still doesn't display correctly.

This is an excerpt from config.h:

static char *font = "IBM Plex Mono:size=12:antialias=true:autohint=true";
/* Spare fonts */
static char *font2[] = {
    "Symbols Nerd Font:size=12:antialias=true:autohint=true",
    "IBM Plex Sans JP:size=12:antialias=true:autohint=true"
/*	"Inconsolata for Powerline:pixelsize=12:antialias=true:autohint=true", */
/*	"Hack Nerd Font Mono:pixelsize=11:antialias=true:autohint=true", */
};

A full text is here.

And this is the st and patch version:

  • st - 0.8.5
  • font2 - 20190416-ba72400.diff

Has anyone encountered a similar issue? I want to share information. Thanks.

Edit 2022/01/19 08:00 (JST):

Just in case, the screen where st -f 'Noto Sans Mono CJK JP:size=12' is executed is attached.
