ELI5: how does the ground not cave in while being under the heavy weight of cities?
New York City for example. There are hundreds of millions of pounds of cement and metals above it, all in a very condensed area. How does the ground not deform or push outwards from underneath? Or how the ground keeps the buildings from not only staying up, but staying straight?

I finally found out why my drain was keep getting clogged. A big rock was stuck in the pipe. The water company had to dig the ground and remove the rock in the pipe and replace it with a new pipe. Basically title. Does anyone know of places in Ottawa to buy high quality coffee beans? I would really like to invest in some higher quality coffee to have at home and don't want to rely on online ordering or subscriptions, etc. if I don't have to. All reccomendations are appreciated.
EDIT: I feel ignorant having not heard of most of these places. I am starting a list and have decided to try as many as I can and will grade them based on my preferences. So keep em coming.

Just a regular giant capital city with regular buildings except for the walls that would just beg for Attack On Titan and Avatar(Ba Sing Se) and Megacity One jokes. It would be a nice place to live overall as the housing in those walls would be cheap but exclusively for those working inside the city. Otherwise people who dont work in the city would want that cheap housing. Probably.
