Crested couas are only found in the wild in Madagascar. The white silky crest, peach colored upper breast, purple back and tail feathers, and naked patch of light blue skin around the eyes easily distinguish this bird from other coua species on the island. Male and female couas look very similar.

TIL though Madagascar now produces 80% of the worldβs vanilla, the vine is native to Mexico. The Maya were the first to cultivate it in the jungles of the Yucatan peninsular. They flavoured their chocolate drink with the spice.

The red fire millipede (Centrobolus splendidus) originates from the forests of southern Africa and it mainly eats dead leaves and rotting wood. One subspecies is found in Madagascar where black lemurs have learned to use the insect's toxins as a form of narcotic and as a natural mosquito repellent.
