There is a hubbub in the upper echelons of Berne. Whether the patricians of the canton are frightened or excited is unclear - just as how such a thing came to existence. Havenβt you heard?

###The Real Last Will and Testament of Duke Charles I of Savoy has been found.
The news spread like wildfire. Some disgruntled Savoyard official has produced the will - though why now and not any other time, we do not know [1]. Perhaps the audits of the late Philiberto were too much and he decided to overturn this dreadful secret that has been hidden for so long. Perhaps he wanted out of the hinterlands and into a proper city. Or perhaps he simply wants an inheritance of his own.
The contents are what matter, however. Charles I hated his uncle - the one that the duchy passed through in inheritance. The late Duke would have rather seen his wealth given as payment and thanks to the cantons of Berne and Fribourg when they so bravely fought against the Marquis of Saluzzo in 1486 [1]. So, in death - and given the emperorβs refusal to have a daughter of the duke take the duchy herself, Charles I entrusted his advisers with his planned will. Duke Charles I decided that Berne should receive 200,000 florins to its name, and Fribourg 150,000 florins more. Should the duchy fail to pay, then Vaud, Chablais, Bugey, and Faucigny would all be mortgaged to the Swiss.
Now, the contents matter, but the will itself --- its authenticity and legitimacy? Worthless. The hubbub in Berne and to a lesser extent Fribourg is about the morals of accepting a fake will as real. The Duke died many years ago! The discussion instead revolves around the fear that some lesser official in Berne might do the same to a Bernese noble family, and blindside the Small Council in a similar manner to how such a will must have blindsided the Savoy family.
But the family is weak - and with the heir but a babe, it is clear there is no time like the present to apply pressure.
To the regent, Duchess Margaret of Savoy:
We, the leaders of Berneβs small council, write to inform you of the discovery of the will of the late Duke Charles I, and the expected gift to the Cantons of Fribourg and Berne. Though we are sorry for the passing of the late Duke Philiberto, should you like to negotiate a plan of payment, we must do so with all haste. Time is, unfortunately, an enemy of us all - and we need not mak

What do you think he'd have thought of the drama of King Henry as it happened in real time?
