HARD TIMES (1975) Charles Bronson, James Coburn

It takes place in the south during the depression around 1930 and based on a true reality of the time with the underworld of gambling and amateur MMA contests.

A perfect movie that has aged like fine wine. Well worth a couple dollars to stream.

I first saw this movie with my mom in a drive-in when I was 8 years old and it was amazing and unforgettable.

Then I saw it again as a teenager on HBO in the 1980's.

Then last night I stumbled upon some obscure internet click-bait thing about Charles Bronson and remembered this old movie and convinced my wife we should rent it for $2.99. She never heard of it.

Let me tell you brothers & sisters, it was well worth the $2.99. They don't make movies like that anymore!

I wish they did.

FYI, the gal that portrays Bronson's love interest, Jill Ireland, was his wife in real life and he got her in the cast of almost all his movies until her untimely death from cancer in the 1980's.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

A Western Each Year - The Last Roundup! 1899, 1903, 1906 and 1908-2021

This list includes one Western for every year in which I could find a reasonable amount of information to share.

A production's presence on this list doesn't mean it was the Best of any given year, but simply that it was notable enough to share. I have generally avoided Contemporary Westerns and tried to spotlight Feature movies where I could.

It's been fun and educational, and I've really enjoyed interacting with everyone. Thanks to you all for your interest and participation in this series!

Year Movie
2021 "The Harder They Fall" a Netflix produced movie starring Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Regina King, Zazie Beetz and Delroy Lindo in a heavily fictionalized story of actual African-American Western figures. A highly ambitious project with mixed reviews so far.
2020 "News of the World" directed by Paul Greengrass, starring Tom Hanks as a man trying to return a girl kidnapped and raised by Kiowa to her surviving relatives. The two face threats at every turn across a hostile Texas landscape. Generally well received by Critics.
2019 "Never Grow Old" starring Emile Hirsch and John Cusack. An Outlaw rides into a God Fearing town, and his influence slowly corrupts it and everyone in his orbit. Hirsch is the Farmer/Undertaker both befriended and threatened by the Outlaw, who eventually takes a stand.
2018 "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" directed by the Coen Bros. A top cast stars in a seriocomic anthology of Western tales featuring the Coens' offbeat storytelling style. Diverting and sometimes memorable, it presumes the audience knows and loves Westerns to enjoy the twists.
2017 "Godless", a Netflix original miniseries starring Jack O'Connell, Michelle Dockery and Jeff Daniels. A town full of widows tries to survive, threatened by an Outlaw leader that is searching the West for a man that betrayed him. Intriguing storytelling with a strong cast.
