The fiery heart of the CFM56: the annular combustor ring, a core part of the engine; containing several fuel injectors. The air inlet holes around the injector seat are arranged to create a 'swirling' vortex which focuses the ignited air/fuel mix to turn the HP turbine. Powers 737/A320 + many more.

OTD in 1988, TACA Flight 110 lands on a levee after both engines flameout in heavy rain. All 45 on board survived with only one injury. The cause was determined to be inadequate water ingestion standards by the FAA along with a design flaw in the CFM56 engines themselves.

If an Airbus A318 came equipped with Rolls-Royce RB211-535s in place of its CFM56s; and a pair of double-slotted flaps, it could theoretically operate at Courchevel Altiport and every other airports (except Juancho Yurausquin) (with at least 2500ft of runway) that previously can't handle A318s.

I saw that the FAA plans to issue an emergency AD to require ultrasonic inspections of first stage fan blades on the CFM56-7B engines after the SWA1380 accident this week. Anyone here know what inspections have been previously required?
Visual? Ultrasonic? Dye penetrant? I'd be curious about TIS too, if you have that information.
