Years ago, one could see threads with dozens of pages of people arguing which was best: Caylus or Agricola. They both competed for the place of best worker placement game, and both had a legion of fans.
Nowadays, when people ask about the best worker placement game, Agricola is still in the discussion, but few people talk about Caylus anymore, and I rarely see people talk about it in comparison to other classics.
Is the theme too dry for the board game standards nowadays? I would say that in some games, like El Grande, I do feel like that dry theme makes it feel a bit outdated (I will probably get downvoted for this). However, games like Tigris and Euphrates still remain favorites and are recommended on a daily basis because their mechanics are just too good. Is Caylus outdated or the king stays the king?
In a time where there are games like Barrage, Lacerdas and all the Rosenberg games, do you guys still enjoy Caylus? I am curious to know :)
I am willing to do trades via shipping, but I prefer local trades.

Hello - I have a few games for sale (local pickup). Please let me know if you have any questions, i.e. condition specifics or edition clarifications. In most cases I would actually rate the condition of the games more at a [3.5] than a [3], but I didn't want to deviate from convention.
Thank you.

Friends, where do I begin? Picked this up with some trepidation however was not interested in it enough to pay for the original version. Concerns were the new player abilities, absence of some the starter buildings, and playing from the bottom up. Change is bad! Spoiler, it's amazing!
Opened it up and taught two new to the game in 10-15 min. Easy teach and they picked it up immediately. It's worth saying they were veteran board gamers in the medium weight games.
Having a little original Caylus game play under my belt I was blown away at how smooth the game progressed. No run away leader's, not that we would have known as the tokens were flipped over. I know it's a simple thing but I thought I was on the down and out in third. End of game, I was 2nd and within 5 points of the leader. Had no idea.
Provost meanness came out, might have been me and I might have enjoyed it too much.... And it may be why I didn't win. However, was well received. The whole 9 rounds and end of game had zero impact for me. It may have helped me map out my endgame. Yes, I enjoy the original Bailiff and provost but still amazing.
Two player! OK, second time was with 2 players. Love it! Tactical. Cannot say enough. Plenty of player interaction with highs and lows getting to a tile first. The variable player bonus abilities really popped this time making the favor + steal a priority. Provost rarely used as it was a fight to go out first or use bonus abilities to pay a little extra to get an advantage. No doubt it becomes a blood bath at 4 and 5 players.
Had concerns regarding the bonus character abilities when I decided to pick this up and was ready to house rule them out buuuut... they add just enough to be relevant and with the ability to steal, add significantly to the game and the player interaction.
Components are amazing, on par with the West Kingdom series, maybe a step up. Art work and colour palette are robust, a pleasure to look at.
2 plays and this is easily my top 3. Yes I may have 5 or 6 in my top three spots, just ignore the math and know that this is an amazing revision of the original Caylus. Will be tough to go back to BGA but I will push thru it.

I'd be interested in any of the games in the title as well the Foul play expansion for Blood Bowl Team Manager.
I've heard a lot on both and curious what people think. It seems 1303 is better but loses a bit of oomph original caylus has, even if it's faster and easier to get to the table. Any thoughts?
Here is what I already have.
I would strongly prefer to trade rather than buy because funds are low.
SOLD TERRA MYSTICA
... and to me it looks great! From the same designer William Attia, Caylus 1303 :
https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/59baa2_446d9b17f3814d9883a8f74add7f379b.pdf
There is so much variability, you will get a completely new puzzle each time. From what I read, everything I like about the original is in this new version, without sacrificing depth or interactivity as the designer promised. And it's supposed to play faster, so it will potentially be easier to get to the table. Player powers are the big new element, but they don't seem so strong as to throw off everything else. Spending and housing workers seems more thematic, and getting favors from actual people does too. If the buildings and powers are balanced, this new game should be really fun. What do you think Caylus fans?
Looking to trade for Terraforming mars and itβs expansions. I have a varied collection and am willing to part with most games to trade for terraforming mars. All games are in condition 4 and am willing to trade one, two, or up to three games to meet trade value. In terms of shipping, each party would be responsible for shipping their own games to the other.

Thanks for looking.
Caylus 1303 is releasing soon!!!!
I'm a massive fan of the original and was lucky enough to be asked to create the tutorial video for the new version, which is out soon!
Have you played the original? Are you excited about the new version, or will you shun it as an inferior version of a masterpiece?
Personally, I think the new version is great, and will bring the game to a new audience. I know many existing fans will feel it is dumbed-down and missing something, but a lighter, shorter game that still captures the same feel. That's good with me :)
Tutorial and playthrough video here: https://youtu.be/0_z1Zj6VgoM
Looking to trade or sell! Prices do not include shipping. All games are [4]'s unless noted. Happy to provide pics upon request. Also happy to trade multiple games if it makes sense. PM and we can work it out! Cheers!

I've long loved Caylus, and played it again recently after having it on the shelf for a few years. I've forgotten just how deep and rewarding a game it is. I especially love that the only random element is in the setup of the neutral buildings, so you have to really own your performance.
Has anything else managed to scratch this itch so well? Deep euro with multiple strategies AND almost zero random elements? (Not that I'm always opposed to randomness, but it's nice to have a break from it sometimes, especially after the game of Twilight Struggle I recently had.)
New York City (NYC), 11102.
Prefer local, shipping at buyers expense. All games in like new or good condition. Will consider bundle pricing/shipping if interested in multiple games :)
