Hey Reddit! Carlo Valdes here. I’m looking forward to answering all of your questions today! Ever since I was a little kid in Newport Beach, I wanted to compete at the Olympic level. My former UCLA teammate and javelin thrower, Andreas Drbal, who has also been on the National Bobsled Team, introduced me to the sport of bobsled and my head coach at UCLA, Mike Maynard, encouraged me to try out for the team as he coached National Team members, Nick Cunningham and Nic Taylor, while they were running track at Boise State. I have a Bachelor's of Art degree in history from UCLA and played wide receiver for the football team for a year. My football career was over when I joined the track and field team as a decathlete, then as a javelin thrower. My first encounter with a bobsled had me hooked. The perfect combination of speed and strength and as someone 6’2” and 220 pounds, I was the prototypical ‘push’ athlete! Some of my hobbies include playing golf, I’m a hardcore fantasy football owner, and I know Kung-Fu. Something I’m especially proud of was being named an Athlete Mentor for Classroom Champions, a non-profit organization partnering Olympic and Paralympic athletes with students and teachers in underserved communities. I’m currently working with students in the San Francisco Bay Area and I hope I have made an impact on their lives so far. SIGNING OFF! Thank you!
