It was said that when Harry Crosby died in 1929 so did 'the roaring twenties' come to their end and that this was no coincidence.
A free spirited upper class son of a rich New England banking family, as a young volunteer ambulance driver in WWI (opening scene) Harry inexplicably and miraculously survived a direct hit from a shell on his ambulance and later stated of the incident that at that moment he lost all fear of death.
Back home during a family dinner party, the smitten Harry Crosby initiated a relationship with a married woman much older than he, Caresse.
The two married aboard an ocean liner whilst moving to Paris and there quickly set themselves up to live the lives of the bon vivant, entertaining and supporting some of the early twentieth century's literary greats whom they published through Harry and Caresse's self funded publishing company, The Black Sun Press.
Their lives were noted for extreme hedonism, orgies, an open marriage, legendary theme parties, at one of which semi naked Caresse made her entrance upon a full size elephant, bathtubs full of people and champagne, daily hashish and cocaine consumption and all round party animalism.
These were an altogether rock and roll start lifestyle living couple inhabiting the famed West bank of Paris, along with their friends and lovers, the legendary Lost Generation to whom their home served as a focal point and their patronage and element intrinsically important to the development of the many great literary works of the 20thC.
Caresse was the inventor of the brassiere and Harry had a crucifix tattooed on the dole of one foot and a black sun upon the other.
The scene I'd most like to see is Harry Crosby engaged in one of his favourite pranks at a Paris book stall where he'd slip rare first editions onto the book pile and then presumably observe from from a nearby cafe table as some lucky book buyer discovered the tome and paid a pittance for it (but that's just me-a book geek).
A fascinatingly interesting and historically culturally significant couple, it's astounding that no one has as yet sought to recreate their wild adventures on film.
