The Comprehensive Guide to Hermit Crab Stress, Handling, and Captive-Bred vs. Wild-Caught
By Clover
Handling: There are multiple different theories on what crabs can deal with when it comes to handling. Personally, I tend to go the route of hands-off, but it varies to what you feel is right for you and your own crabs. Hermit crabs are prey animals; in the wild, theyβre not picked up and played with. Therefore, I only handle them when I need to, such as to move them (One of them is sitting on something I need to adjust, stuck somewhere, etc) Occasional health checks (Making sure they look healthy- no lost limbs, etc.) And the occasional post-molt pick up- I love their sharp lil toes after a molt!
Crabs generally seem to prefer this route as well. Taking them out of their tank deprives them of the humidity and heat they require. Stress is also a major factor in this; crabs react badly to stress and can die from it.
Stress: Like I said above, stress is a huge thing to consider. Anything major that disturbs them causes them stress- such as often handling, not adequate conditions, etc. Itβs important to watch your crabs and make sure they look alright and make improvements where needed.
Wild-Caught vs. Captive-Bred: ALL hermit crabs found in pet stores are wild-caught. Not everybody understands the weight of those words. Theyβre ripped from their homes, piled into buckets and burlap bags, shipped for weeks with no heat, humidity, food, water, anything. Although yes, all my crabs are wild-caught, there is a new option that is becoming more available. Captive-bred crabs are being offered by Mary Akers. She is the first to successfully breed land hermit crabs in the USA- sheβs been doing it for 2 or 3 years now, I believe.
Itβs extremely hard to breed hermit crabs- near perfect conditions are needed, and 24/7 care needs to be put in for the zoea (baby crabs.) But, these captive-breds know very little to no stress, harm, and fear, and are shipped very, very humanely. In addition, you have to fill out an application to get your hands on these babies. But in my opinion, itβs worth it. Iβm looking forward to the day I get my own captive-breds.

CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN (1943)
__
Much better than you'd fear. Paula Dupree, the Ape Woman, is one of the least known or appreciated of the Universal monsters from the golden age. True, the two sequels to this movie are numbingly bad (JUNGLE WOMAN and JUNGLE CAPTIVE have as much footage from this first flick as a McDonalds hamburger has filler), but CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN itself is brisk cheesy fun with a good dose of lurid sex thrown in.
Young animal trainer Fred Mason brings back from Africa an unusually intelligent and friendly female gorilla named Cheela (I presume that he gave her the name, and she didn't come up with it herself but you never know). At the same time, Fred's sweetheart has a gal pal who is suffering from excess hormones, so she brings her friend to a famous endocrinologist, Dr Walters. Oh, no! It's John Carradine! You know there's going to be trouble now.
Walters has been fooling around with experiments that involve changing the species and sex of animals by glandular transplants (and just WHY is this a good idea, doctor?). Before you can finish your popcorn, he has the ailing young woman strapped to a table and is donating her blood and glandular extracts to Cheela. Not working. Well, there's nothing else to do but kill his faithful nurse of thirteen years and put her brain in the female gorilla's body. That does the trick, and Cheela abruptly transmogrifies into the darkly exotic Acquanetta. Walters dubs the sultry if rather dim young woman Paula Dupree (perhaps after an old girlfriend).
Universal screenwriters never seemed to grasp the idea that human memories are stored in the brain; instead of Paula bursting out, "You bastard! You killed me and put my brain in a damn ape?!" as the resurrected nurse realized the situation, Paula seems to take it all in a dazed acquiescence. There is a great moment here as Walters smirks at the docile young woman who meekly follows his orders. Remembering his late nurse's warning about this experiment ("What will you have? A human form with animal instincts!") Walters grins a remarkably lecherous leer and we realize that's exactly what he had in mind all along.
Well, sooner or later, Walters has to stop staying up all night molesting his creation (if this movie were made today, you can bet there'd be a detailed soft porn montage of Paula in action) and when he takes her to the circus to see how she reacts to her former habitat, they find the Ape Woman has a strange hypnotic power over other animal

All I saw was a woman singing and dancing to country music and there was text pointing out that you could see hostages on the laptop screen / in the background. Any one have any ideas?
