The episode is titled “Kobayashi Maru” after the test of the same name Starfleet cadets are required to take. First mentioned in “The Wrath of Khan”, it is a ”no win scenario.” James Kirk was the first and, at the time, only person to beat it, having reprogrammed the test in order to do so. Starfleet quite famously has zero tolerance for those who contravene their rules, so Kirk was drummed out of Starfleet.
- The Kobayashi Maru is one of a variety of such tests Starfleet cadets, officers, and even potential cadets are subjected to. In “Coming of Age” Wesley’s entrance exam to even get into the Academy requires him to face his greatest fear, leaving someone to die. In “Thine Own Self” Counselor Troi undergoes the Bridge Officer’s Test, where she’s required to order a subordinate to their death. The short “Ask Not” has Captain Pike play out an elaborate ruse with a cadet, having her guard him under suspicion of mutiny while he tries to talk her into betraying her orders in a time of crisis, all to evaluate her before having her transferred to the crew of the USS Enterprise. All this is why Starfleet’s official moto is “You Were Probably Going to get PTSD Anyway.”

Captain Michael Burnham [Sonequa Martin-Green] uses the taxonomic nomenclature ”Felis Catus” to refer to Grudge, Book’s [David Ajala] cat Grudge. In “Schisms” Data receipted a poem about his cat, Ode to Spot, which began with that same term.

The Alshain appear to be connected with the butterfly like insects that are abundant on their world, either having a symbiotic relationship, or a gestalt species. The Trill introduced in “The Host” can join with symbionts to the benefit of both beings, and the TAS episode “Bem” introduced the Pandorians who are colony creatures which join together to form a single being.

Having sufficiently upset the Alshain in a classic comic book misunderstanding fight, Burnham and Book lead them in a chase. This whole sequence is very reminiscent of the opening sequences from both “Into Darkness” and “Beyond”.

Burnham suggests Book would be better off with a hologram goldfish than an actual pet. Captain Jean-Luc Picard had a pet lion fish, Livingston, in his ready room, which apparently Patrick Stewart hated, feeling that keeping a living being for purely ornamental purposes was immoral and something humanity should have moved past by the 24th century.

Currently I'm about 57:43 on whether I enjoy DISCO or not, there are a lot of episodes that I've liked, but I can't say I like the show overall. That being said, there are more than a few people who find Discovery a very entertaining program, they're very pleased with the content that they're getting. It would be out of line for me to say that DISCO needs to be "fixed," but I do think that it can be dramatically improved such that Roddenberman fans like myself can enjoy the show more, without undermining what its current fans already like.... I think. Since I'm not someone who likes the show I can only make assumptions, but for those who care, know that those assumptions are made in good faith.
Anyway, here it goes:

Move away from a leading role to ensemble roles. If the writers want Burnham to be first among equals that's okay (not ideal, but okay) as long as she's among equals. The supporting cast of Discovery is made up of really strong characters and actors, Saru, Vance, Tilly, Detmer, Stamets, Culber, David Cronenberg, they should all be given storylines the same way that LaForge, Tucker, O'Brien, Nog, Bashir, fuckin' Kess, and Tuvix did. Spread the love around, y'know?

Less fucking banter, fewer one-liners. (I didn't say "No banter and no one-liners.") Dialogue like this only works if it's used sparingly, one one-liner per episode stands out, twenty six one-liners per episode is annoying; Riker making a cheeky comment to Picard right before the credits role stands out, when the bridge crew is gabbing like they've all had a shot of tequila for breakfast it gets annoying. I'm don't like to site Roddenberry's vision, but the Enterprise was supposed to be a nuclear submarine in space, you don't goof around on a nuclear submarine.

I don't know if I dislike that DISCO is serialized, or if I dislike the "save the galaxy" plotlines, but one of those isn't working for me. A good middle ground might be semi-serialization, where half the episodes are episodic and the other half tell the story, kind of like ENT and DS9; or instead of saving the galaxy, maybe just save a single planet, or starship, or timeline, or solar system?
