A list of puns related to "Canlii"
I'm currently doing a legal paper for an introductory business law course and need to find similar cases to the mock scenarios that were given in class, and we have to use CanLii to find those cases.
I cannot for the life of me use this thing. No matter what terms I input, I'm given completely irrelevant cases. The mock cases we've been given are so oddly specific, yet so vague at the same time that it just seems impossible to search for. Also because it's introductory, we can only use tort law so I can't just pull out some shit about contract law
Just one of my mock scenarios. A courier was scheduled to deliver a letter for a company, and the company agreed to sign a clause that states the courier is not responsible for damages due to late delivery. Basically, the courier ended up forgetting to deliver it. The contents of the letter was bidding for services and cost the company a project and ultimately thousands of dollars.
I can easily come up with point/counterpoint and what should happen going off what we've learned about negligence. I just cannot find any cases that are about late delivery causing damage, but there being a clause in place that excuses the courier from damages. I don't even know where to begin on finding something a case so oddly specific. I search for late delivery, I get cases about birth or cases being adjourned for late delivery of reports. I add courier, I get cases that have involve some sort of courier or late delivery, but they aren't the centerpiece of the story. I add responsibility for late delivery, I just get nothing.
On Tuesday, August 10, I posted Aphria Inc. Securities Class Action: Leave to Proceed under the Ontario Securities Act Granted and Global Class Certified here on /r/weedstocks
Some people were interested in more depth to what's going on with that class action lawsuit. CanLII is the Canadian Legal Information Institute. They have now posted the entire court file should anyone be interested in looking over the case in depth: Vecchio Longo Consulting Services Inc. v. Aphria Inc., 2021 ONSC 5405 (CanLII)
This is also related: Clarus Securities Inc. v. Aphria Inc., 2021 ONSC 3720 (CanLII)
Someone I worked with was arrested in a provincial wide criminal sting in 2018. I'm extraordinarily curious in finding out more about his charges, trial, and punishment.
The only information I have of his is the publicized article of the arrest, his name, city he lived in at time of arrest, and age at time of arrest. I don't know anything about what court he might have been seen in, if that happens in a different city, or anything else beyond that.
I've tried searching his name and initials in canlii but come up empty.
Are there other resources or ways I could go about getting any of this kind of information?
I recognize that in the end this isn't my business and this is all just a morbid curiousity, so it might simply be that I can't get this kind of information. Or that this question isn't allowed. If so just let me know. But I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask and maybe get advice. Thank you.

OVERVIEW
[1] The main claim in this case relates to the interpretation of an Engagement Letter (โthe Contractโ) dated January 21, 2019 between the Plaintiff (โScotiaโ) and the Defendant (โAphriaโ). The Engagement Letter was entered into for the provision of services by Scotia in defending a hostile take-over bid. In issue is the interpretation of paragraph 2(d) of the Contract, which requires Aphria to pay a $2.5M Independence Fee (โthe Feeโ). An Opinion Fee of $1M formed part of the Fee. There is no dispute that the work in relation to the Opinion Fee was completed and the Fee was paid. Scotia therefore seeks payment of the balance of the Fee plus HST and expenses for a total of $1.754M.
[2] Aphria defends the claim by asserting that the parties intended that there must be a nexus between the services provided and Aphriaโs independence. Aphria claims that there was no causality between the services provided by Scotia and the result obtained. Alternatively, Aphria submits that Scotia repudiated the Contract and that the repudiation was accepted by Aphria.
[3] As will be set out below, Aphriaโs defence to the claim fails because it got exactly what it bargained for: a successful defence of the Hostile Take-over bid and its independence going forward.
[4] The Counterclaim by Aphria is a claim for damages at large for defamation. This claim relates to a Directorโs Comment (โthe Commentโ) published in October 2019 announcing the discontinuation of analystsโ coverage of Aphria by Scotia. Both the timing of the Comment and the fact it was announced in combination with the discontinuation of coverage for another cannabis company who had serious regulatory problems, were viewed as intentional by Aphria. It claims that the timing and placement of the Comment was a reaction by Scotia to Aphriaโs refusal to pay the Fe
... keep reading on reddit โกI just got blocked from the Canlii site for trying to download many legal decisions for the purpose of a research project. Is there anything I should be worried about? Are there any consequences for this? Or are you just indefinitely blocked?
Thanks
How do you look up the case with the case number? I tried i get no results?
if u can link the document, respects
I anticipate being offline and wanting to peruse Canadian legislation and judicial decisions, such as the collection at https://www.canlii.org/en/databases.html . CanLII prohibits rapid bulk downloading, such as with the software program "wget", and I'm hoping someone here knows a way to get around that without annoying the people at CanLII. For example, is there a copy of the website available on DVD for a nominal price? Perhaps some arrangement could be made to download the pages slowly enough to avoid putting stress on their servers? Maybe there's another sort of approach I haven't thought of?
(My budget for a DVD copy is on the order of $50; I'm on a fixed income. The offline copy will be for my personal use. If the reason for the prohibition is to allow for ad revenue, I currently have roughly 10 ad-blocker extensions on my browser (to prevent drive-by malware infections), so they won't be gaining any such revenue from me regardless.)
I'm looking for A1 applications in Canlii. I've tried "A1", "A1 Application", exact(A1), exact(A1 Application). I keep getting responses like " described as a โ1 bedroom", or "for a 1-year term". Is there an actual way to make it search for "A1" without punctuation or spaces?
The question I'm looking for is the interpretation of "bathroom or kitchen facility with the owner, the ownerโs spouse, child or parent or the spouseโs child or parent, and where the owner, spouse, child or parent lives in the building in which the living accommodation is located" where the lease agreement is between people with those relationships but they don't share any space or facilities. So if you rent a self-contained unit from your parents, is living by yourself considered living with the owner's child? What about if you're married and your spouse now lives with the owner's child?
Answers on LA always seem to assume these are standard RTA leases but I feel like the letter of the law, if not the spirit would imply that you are exempt if you rent from a family member described above, most especially if you don't live alone.
Edit: and why can't I see judicial interim release cases online?
The most populous province of Ontario has only 5000 cases reported by the Divisional court since 2003. While the Small Claims Court has reported only 800 cases. Boards report even fewer, less than 500 cases usually.
In the least populated territory of Yukon, the court of appeal reported only 268 cases since 1993 and a thousand cases for Territorial and Supreme Court.
I am not Canadian but can someone tell me why are so few cases being reported in Canadian courts?
Also does the number in CanLii represent the actual number of cases adjudicated or only those that are selectively reported?
Je sais que CanLII couvre le Canada, mais si on compare seulement les institutions du Quรฉbec (Cours et tribunaux administratifs), c'est quoi la diffรฉrence? Le contenu semble le mรชme.
