What are some candidate libraries for inter-thread communication like message boxes or event systems?

Hi, I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I have an existing C++17 application that makes use of a number of standard threads. In particular one thread is an MQTT client - it subscribes to topics on a remote Broker and when another process somewhere publishes to a subscribed topic, a message is received by this thread. Now I want to forward this message to one of a number of threads in my application (perhaps based on the topic, or something in the message payload itself).

On the one hand I could just make each thread have its own dedicated MQTT client, with its own connection to the Broker, and it can subscribe just to the topics it cares about. I think this would work, but I'm not sure if it's the right approach, and it doubles up (or worse) on network resources when multiple threads want to subscribe to the same topic.

So I'm also considering an approach where I have a single MQTT client thread that subscribes on behalf of all the threads and dispatches incoming messages via some kind of internal messaging or mailbox system. Perhaps each thread has its own "receipt" queue (protected by locks etc) that the MQTT Client thread can push data into, and it registers itself during initialisation. I could probably design my own mechanism, but I am a little time-pressed, it's likely to be buggy for a long time, and I'd prefer to learn to use a decent open-source library instead.

I was looking at SObjectizer as a message box provider, and it seems well designed and the API is nice, but I'm not sure how to go about retro-fitting it into an existing application, since all my threads already exist and I don't really want to change them all into SO "Agents", and I also don't see how to integrate the Dispatcher. I think it's worth a look though, if anyone with experience can confirm it is appropriate.

Alternatively, are there any other libraries out there for robust messaging between multiple threads in a single application? Note that I don't need network or IPC support as all the threads are in the same process. Anything like this in Boost?

I'm also looking for any suggestions of what this kind of library might be called - what sort of terms should I be searching for? What is this kind of system called? Inter-thread Communication? Messaging System? In-process Pub/Sub? "Actor Concurrency" - is that the thing I am trying to do?

If it's of any interest, the MQTT Client I am using is [mqtt_cpp](https://g

ASL and Picture Exchange Communication Systems

Hi my fellow autists πŸ’•

I'm raising my first child diversability-friendly.

Are there any good apps for PECS? Any warnings about using ASL or PECS?

I've taught my babe a few ASL signs since he was little. It's the same with words, he's picked up a few and then moves on. He doesn't often use them to communicate. I can understand him nonverbally fairly well, but for eating, I think he'd be happier choosing his food instead of being served and not always eating what he wants. I'm starting to introduce simple choices if I can put the actual things in front of him. He can look in the refrigerator and pick out a snack or leftovers.... but that's not always feasible. He can't help me cook yet, he's not two years old yet.

I am thinking of introducing some pictures of the food - real pictures, not cartoon pictures I imagine would be better? I'm not a stay-at-home mom so I don't really want to reinvent the wheel here. Any recommendations?

Valorant should add an honor system like league to encourage communication and friendly behaviors

Besides all the posts about toxic teammates, I met so many nice teammates that I want to thank to, and the only thing I could do is saying thx in the chat. Other than punishments for toxity and team sabotaging, there should be incentives for making good comms, taking leadership roles and friendly behaviors.

Like league, why don't we add an honor system where we can honor our teammates after a game and have people rewarded for getting a lot of honors? Imo it's a good way to improve the gaming environment. Also, this way people that like to play controllers, supports can get recognition too.

support/criticism of "Non-Violent Communication" - a system to aid communication

This system of communicating seems to be extremely effective, just from my experience, and I wonder how it squares with anarchism.

It assumes the typical undamaged person, as a social animal, is compassionate towards others. In spite of that compassion, violence exists and is due to misunderstandings. But once two parties communicate their needs, meaning they are genuinely understood, they can almost always find a compromise to try to meet everyone's needs. We are just really bad at communicating.

That desire to meet everyone's needs seems very communal, socialist, egalitarian, and liberating in a similar sense to how anarchism assumes the undamaged person is good and seeks to set people free by enabling their well-being and removing unjustified authority.

I was watching this video, https://youtu.be/CwHBD7Ihy5U?t=1324 at the end the creator of NVC describes what his dream is. His answer seemed very based. It made me wonder what the role of violence and what the role of language could be in a revolution or evolution of society? In the video he said his dreams was that if a critical mass of people were trained in NVC then the whole world should be able to compassionately meet everyone's basic needs, which sounds complementary to anarcho-communism.

Can NVC be a language to help facilitate understanding of anarchist principles and its desire for a society of compassionate individuals practicing solidarity?

And what of violence, NVC does make room for violence, sometimes authority is justified (don't ban me), and it recognizes violence is necessary to be used in a protective sense at times. With that, you can sort of imagine reconciling the two philosophies, NVC and anarchism. But in the video he calls out Martin Luther King Jr as an example of NVC and that shows he has a very different standard for the tolerance of oppression than some in this community. Regardless of Dr. Rosenberg's personal opinions on dealing with oppression and hierarchy, can NVC inform how change is accomplished, can NVC help delineate what violence is and is not justified?

NVC seems like an obvious great tool for how society thinks and communicates in the future. But can it help inform anarchism today without rendering it impotent?

what is NVC

Communication system involving domestic telegraphs

I'm creating a world inspired by the Iron Kingdoms RPG, which mixes High Fantasy with Steampunk, or, as the developers called it, Fullmetal Fantasy, and I'd like to share an idea I had for home telegraphs that will be quite common in this world. I'm still not sure what the long-distance communication system will look like, however, I had the idea of creating a telegraph network that connects household telegraphs for communication between homes that are in the same city or urban area. It would be like a telephone, each house would have its telegraph and could transmit messages (the addressing system is still pending, but it could be by numbers, similar to the telephone) through morse code, but I also thought of instead of using morse code or something Similarly, the telegraph apparatus has a typewriter-like keyboard for typing the intended message.

It will be like real telegraphs, with the difference that they will be used at home. A person at home who wants to send a message to someone on the other side of town will use his telegraph to "dial" the address of the telegraph device to which he intends to send the message and then write the message. Then, the telegraph receiving the message will trigger an alarm type indicating that there is a new message to be viewed (or contain some permanent way of showing that there are unread messages, until the reading is done). To read the message, the person who received it must then allow his telegraph to print it on paper (the method of doing this may be with a simple lever or some kind of switch).

However, I also thought of a more economical way for the receiver to read your messages, since viewing received messages would waste both paper and ink for printing. This method would be by perforated papers, like a paper tape from a teletype, so the recipient of the message would authorize his telegraph to perforate a sheet of paper through a needle installed in the device. This way there would be only paper expenses.

The message would then look something like this: https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/images1/1/0317/08/vintage-dec-pdp11-diagnostic-system_1_c8d3bf7ad15911481251a18ab4d4a175.jpg

And of course, there is the question of how these domestic telegraphs work. I don't think this system would be efficient for long-distance communications, but it could work for nearby homes that are in the same city. Just as in the real world telegraphs were connected by long wires of electrical pulses, in my wor
