It's been ages since I've done a review on here and damn did I pick a doozy! This movie is crazy.. it honestly amazes me that CBS allowed this to air in April 1980. They spared no punches in either part of this mini series (2 parter.) First part is batcrappingly insane as it shows Jones's decline into madness, 2nd part is just flat out dark especially within the last hour. You get 2 different movies pretty much in one 4 hr sitting.
First of all I'd figured i'd address what most people remember the movie for which is Powers Booth's performance here as Jones. It's hands down one of the best TV performances I've ever seen an actor give. He became Jim Jones and was a force of characterization, eat your heart out Jim Carrey he has you beat! IDK what PB did but he got into the role so good and easy. He not only looks like Jones but he nailed the voice and mannerisms too.. it gets a little too creepy in the 2nd half. First half wise he plays him with more humanity (more on that in a second,) which makes for a 180 once he goes wild. Leo Dicaprio is supposed to be playing him in a new theatrical film coming up.. best of luck man! You have a hell of a shadow to overcome. PB very much deserved his Emmy and honestly it's a shame this wasn't a theatrical film because this is very much at least an Oscar nom worthy performance. Shame PB couldn't get that Oscar nom he was very good, RIP.
As for the movie itself it is very much a tale of two halves: first half is mostly about Jim but it expands on everyone who mattered in real life (albeit some with different names.) 2nd meanwhile is just straight up a buildup to the Flavor Aid rush with some San Francisco scenes thrown in. To be 100% honest I preferred the first half more because the story is a little more centered and flows better. 2nd half it is more focused on Boothe and less on everyone else and I was disappointed a few people had so little time. This is ultimately one of the main faults I had with this movie.. this badly needed to be a 3-4 episode mini series at least. I was left wanting to see more in quite a few ways: more of Jim's childhood-college years, more of his start in the church , more scenes with the people at the temple, hell none of his children besides the one involved in the custody dispute are even mentioned in this! That's a serious flaw. I'll give it a pass however due to the fact what we got instead made up for it, however that still hurt. We get more time with the attorney who turned
