Watched on 20/10/21.
I found this to be an enjoyable film with a lot of heart put into it. It was well written and well acted and I can definitely see how its popularity and charm has bled into pop culture as a whole. There's just so much care put into everything from everyone that it's obvious this film is a labour of love.
I thought the police station part at the end dragged on near the end but ultimately it's a well paced film. I suppose even the mall part can be included where it felt like an unnecessary fetch quest but hey.
Honestly I'd recommend this film just to understand all the fun stuff that has become part of our culture and to see how much heart is in this. While Reeves and Winter act like dumb teenagers, they do it with such care that I really appreciate them and who they are as characters. You care for them and you should care for this film too. Be excellent to each other!
So if Wild Stallions had already written the music that made the future a utopia, why did Rufus need to help them along and prevent a breakup caused by the history exam failure? That future already exists, so why go back and change anything? My theory is that Rufus is lying to them and WS isn’t actually the unifying force we think they are. Instead, Rufus is using them to alter the future world in which he lives for personal gain. It could be that he owns a company or has a product that benefits greatly in the new world he orchestrates. While less lucrative, that autographed CD he has of WS might be worth big bucks in the future. This could be a gimmick he does often: travel back in time, create mega-bands and then sell rare merch on the secondary market in his time.
Ted forgets to go back and steal his dad's keys (similar to how he forgets to wind watch), Bill and Ted fail the report and Ted goes to military school. This leads to the bleak world in the John Wick movies, Ted learns assassin skills at military school, and changes his name to protect his family.
