A list of puns related to "Bernal Díaz Del Castillo"
I'm about halfway through The Conquest of New Spain, and Díaz seems to take shots at his captain at every opportunity.
Towards the beginning, he recounts the story of a jester who warned Governor Velasquez that he would regret appointing Cortés captain of the expedition, and then says
>Everything this fool had predicted, however, took place to the very letter, and only proves that fools often speak the truth.
He immediately glosses this rather lamely by saying,
>It is nevertheless certain that the appointment of Hernando Cortes was pleasing in the eyes of God, a blessing to our holy religion, and of the first importance to his majesty
One of his complaints against Gomara's history of the conquest is that
>every circumstance is made to turn to the glory and honour of Cortes
When he speaks of Cortés ordering the destruction of their ships, he explains it thusly:
>the idea of destroying our vessels originated with Cortes himself, and that he merely shoved it on our shoulders for this reason, that if payment for the vessels should be demanded of him, he could throw the blame on us, and say that all was done at our own request; so that we both individually and collectively should have to assist in repaying the damages.
Finally, he (circuitously) compares him to Nero,
>I shall never forget how Cortes cried out, with a sigh, and deeply affected, at the moment he signed the death-warrants: "What a fortunate thing if I were unable to write; then should I neither be able to sign a death-warrant!" This same exclamation likewise frequently falls from judges who have to decide over life and death; in which expression, however, they merely repeat the words of the barbarous emperor Nero, when in the commencement of his reign he showed so goodly a disposition.
Am I misreading anything? Did Díaz hate (or at least dislike) his commander? If so, why?
After Cortez and his men took control of Mexico City, they put together a package of spoils to send back to the Emperor. Gold, Montezuma's cloak, slaves, stuff like that. The Spanish ship got captured by a French pirate who then turned it all (?) over to the king of France, who then bragged to the Spanish Emperor about it.
Do any of those things still exist?
How common was this method, was this as unconventional as it seems and why would they even need fat to bandage soldiers wounds. Thank you
Is "True History of the Conquest of New Spain" a biased account of the events, or can it be taken as a reasonably true?
Hola
Gracias.
To whoever watched this documentary, what are your thoughts? Can't imagine myself in Marta's parents position, there is just too much degradation and disrespect, it's beyond understanding.
