Why are Fine Art Museums often in the Beaux-Arts architectural style?

As the title states, I am wondering why so many fine art museums (particularly those in the US) are based on the Beaux-Arts style of architecture. Contemporary or Regional art museums will often have different architecture, but the typical main art museum for a city is often that Beaux-Arts architecture.
